On Monday of this week Ms. Park’s grade 2 class lit the third candle on our Advent wreath. On Monday the grade 5 and 6 class will light the fourth candle.

Ms. Bennett’s grade 3 and 4 class hosted a successful book sale in aid of Haiti on Wednesday at lunch. There were lots of great books to choose from.

Our annual Christmas concert was a success. The theme was “Beneath the Shining Star”. Thank you to Mr. Graham and Mrs. McHugh for all their hard work preparing the choir and bands. There was a bake sale organized by Ms. Deckert and tickets were sold on a framed photograph by Dru Kennedy.  Also thank you to the teachers and students who helped to decorate our gym with beautiful lights and Christmas murals.  The concert DVD is available at the office for a donation to the playground project.

On Thursday our chamber choir sang at the Senior Citizen’s Complex. Thank you to Mr. Graham for playing piano for the girls and organizing the mini show.

Our Food Drive, Toy Drive and Stockings for Seniors drive will continue until Monday. If you have forgotten there is still time to bring in your items. Maria Reynolds will represent our school on Monday with the RNC food drive as they pick up food donations.

Some of our students are skating in a benefit for Joshua King this Sunday at the Pepsi Centre.
After Christmas our school will welcome Mr. Peter Hiscock to Mrs. McCarthy’s grade 5 and 6 class. Mr. Hiscock will be doing a 13 week teaching internship

From The Classrooms
 
The junior kindergarten classes are busy making gift bags for their parents. They are excited about the Christmas break.
 
Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had fun at the Christmas concert.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is learning about baby Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas.  They hope the whole world has the best Christmas ever!

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is doing Christmas crafts. They had a lot of fun at the Christmas concert. Merry Christmas!

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is making Christmas cards for seniors and learning how to subtract numbers. They are also making up Christmas subtraction stories.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is making cards and special presents for parents. They are collecting food, toys and stocking items for seniors.

Ms. Park’s grade two class was busy painting Christmas scenes this week. They are learning about things that float and things that sink.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class would like to thank everyone who came to their book sale on Wednesday. They even had some extra books to sell at the Christmas concert. They are very excited about Christmas break.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is watching the movie “Holes” today. They really enjoyed reading the book and hope the movie is just as good. They are looking forward to their party and gift exchange on Monday.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class is excited about Christmas break. They had science and math tests this week.

Coming Up
  
There will be a school wide breakfast on Monday morning beginning at 7:45 am. Also, Monday is Christmas character day and our variety show.



School closes on Monday at 12:00 pm and will re-open on January 3. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

Clare Coleman and Avery Brothers display their Christmas wreaths they made in the sewing club with Ms. Deckert and Ms. Farrell.

The tree trimming and parade was a ton of fun! Thank you to all the students and teachers who were on the float and took part in the social after. Ty Dumaresque lit the tree. Also thank you Mr. Taaffe for emceeing and Mr. Graham for providing music, and  to Humber Valley Paving who donated the flatbed for our float. We sold the left over cookies on Monday in a bake sale for the playground project.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s class lit the second candle of the Advent wreath on Monday. They led a special prayer in French.

The grade 5 and 6 class had a cookie sale for World Vision on Wednesday. They raised almost $90.00!

The grade 5 and 6 girls’ basketball team had an exhibition game against Sacred Heart in our gym on Wednesday after school. Thank you to Mr. George for refereeing the game.

On Thursday we celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group.
 

Stars of the Week
 

Congratulations to Zubia Mahmood who won first place in the junior high colour poster contest for the Legion’s Remembrance Day Contest. Also, Chloe Colbourne received an honourable mention in the primary colour poster contest. The girls received their certificate in a ceremony on Wednesday night.

Congratulations to Jenna Yetman who participated in a provincial cadet speak off last weekend in St. John’s. Jenna placed third in her category.

Congratulations to Mr. Gillard who was awarded a $500 grant from Western Regional Wellness Coalition for a “Volley Venture” proposal. This money will help us purchase equipment for volleyball and host a few activities.

Congratulations to Mrs. McCarthy’s grade 5 and 6 class who were the winners  of the Winter Carnival Slogan Contest. The Winter Carnival slogan is “Feel the magic in the air Winter Carnival 2012 is finally here!



From The Classrooms


The junior kindergarten classes are making reindeer and elves. They are busy preparing for Christmas. Ms. Vincent and Ms. English welcome a new student, Riley Power, to their class this week.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning French vocabulary words and doing Christmas activities.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is getting ready for Christmas and making their own mangers. They are learning a poem for the Christmas concert.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is learning the letter “m”. They have finished making their family trees and are working on their mangers.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is learning Christmas addition songs and learning about weather and shadows in science. They are counting down the days until Christmas.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about different jobs in social studies and learning about how different animals are getting ready for the winter.  They are also busy learning their lines for the Christmas play.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is doing Santa crafts in their art class and are busy preparing for the Christmas concert. In math class they are learning about fact families and equal and not equal number sentences.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is busy preparing for their used book sale on Wednesday in aid of Haiti. They are learning their multiplication facts. In science they are learning about buildings.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is excited for Christmas! They are having a social studies test on Monday. They are finishing their math booklets on decimals. In art class today they are making chocolate mice tree ornaments.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class is looking forward to Christmas break. In enrichment this week they made crafts and listened to Christmas music.

The grade 3 and 4 class is having a used book sale on Dec. 14th.

Christmas character day and variety show is Dec. 19th. School closes on December 19th at 12:00 pm.

The girls’ basketball team raised a total of $2,400 on their recycling drive! Way to go team! The girls will have their first exhibition game sometime next week.

The grade 6-9 students had a great time in St. John’s. Thank you to Mrs. McCarthy, Mr. Gillard, Mr. Hancock and Mrs. King who travelled with the students. Also thank you to Mr. Whelan, Mr. Sparkes, Mrs. Reynolds and Mr. and Mrs. Hamann who drove the students.  Some of the things they did in St. John’s were bowling, swimming, shopping, watching a movie, rock climbing and touring the Basilica. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare the students including Corey Conrad, Bonita Wheeler, Janet Joyce and Scott Reynolds of Colemans, Sean Dolter of the Green House and Garden Store,  Dave Gillard and Penny Coley of Royal LePage, Dean Simms-Anderson of Mel’s Signs and Graphics,  Peter Antle of the Greenwood Inn, Mrs. Marie Ryan a retired teacher, New Reflections, and Silver Scissors and Emerald Spa.

On Saturday, Mrs. Vincent and Mrs. English hosted a “Shop and Drop” in aid of the Shepherd’s Fund. The day raised $310! Thank you to Mrs. George, Miss Morrall, Mlle Wight, and Ms. Dwyer for helping.

Thank you to Aaron Hancock who helped out at parent teacher night last week.

The first candle of Advent was lit by Mrs. George’s class on Monday morning in chapel.

We had a Skills Challenge showcase in our gym on Wednesday. Thank you to Mr. Gillard for preparing a video and slideshow of the trip.

Today our school library officially re-opens. We are having a small ceremony in the library. Some of our students will read limericks they wrote for National Library Month and there will be volunteers reading books about libraries to our classes.  Our new library is fully automated, has a classroom seating area and a smartboard.

Our student nurses finished their work placements this week in our Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten class.

Tomorrow is the Santa Claus parade and our annual tree trimming ceremony. We hope to see you all there. Thank you to Ms. Bennett, Ms. Wight, Ms. Dwyer, Ms, Morrall, Mr. Gillard and student volunteers for preparing our float.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Bethany Whelan and William Goodridge who won a gold medal in the Wind Turbine Category at the Intermediate Skills Challenge in Mount Pearl.

Congratulations to the Lego Robotics team who won first place in the First Lego League Robot Award last weekend.  They received a plaque to go on the wall. Members of the team are: MacKenzie Brothers, Vanessa Ford, Douglas MacKenzie, Nathan Anderson, Maria Reynolds, Hannah Sparkes, Katerina Hamann, Claire Reynolds, Zubia Mahmood, and Patrick Davis.

Congratulations to all our students who competed in the Skills Challenge. We took part in Lego Robotics, Wind Turbine, Prepared Speech, Job Demonstration, Job Interview, IT Network Scavenger Hunt, Graphic Design, and TV Video Production.


From The Classrooms
 
The junior kindergarten classes are doing Christmas crafts and making presents for their parents.  Student nurses Vicki Jennings, Tanya Hume, Joshua Penney and Mike Reid completed their work placement on Wednesday.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about families in social studies and they are happy to have a class Christmas tree.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is currently learning about Advent in class. They are having fun decorating their class with Christmas decorations.  Student nurses Michael Hinks and Jessica Strowbridge did a presentation with the class on playground safety.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is learning the letter “n” and they are making a winter mural.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class did a lot of painting this week. They are starting addition in math and also did Christmas crafts.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had their first Advent celebration and lit the first candle on the Advent wreath. They wrote friendly letters to Santa and they were excited to have Debbie Marks come in and read to them.

Ms. Park’s grade two class made reindeer crafts this week. In science they had a race to see which liquid (water, ketchup, and vegetable oil) flows faster. In math they created number problems. In social studies they are learning about goods and services.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class just started a new read-aloud called “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”. It’s very funny so far. They are learning about birthdays and celebrations in French class.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is doing an assignement in science about living things. They had a quiz this week. In math they are doing decimal work in their workbooks. In religion they have learned about the changes in our mass.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class had a great time in St. John’s. The grade 8 and 9’s are finishing a novel study on “The Pearl”. The grade 7’s are making a movie about healthy eating. You may have seen them filming kids eating healthy.

Ms. Bennett and Keely Brothers dressed up as Minnie Mouse for Mickey Mouse's birthday last Friday


Monday was National Child Day. Everyone had a purple ribbon to celebrate.

On Saturday the girls’ basketball team had a recycling drive. Thank you to Mr. Taaffe, Mr. Whelan, Mrs. King, Mrs. McCarthy and all the students and their families. They raised $1,900.

Parent teacher night was Tuesday evening.

Wednesday was picture re-takes and we had a presentation on the QSP magazine fundraiser.

The grade 6-9 students left yesterday for St. John’s. Today they are attending mass at the Basilica and going rock climbing. Tomorrow is the skills challenge. Good luck! Thank you to everyone who helped prepare the students.

Congratulations to Hannah Sparkes and Douglas MacKenzie who represented our school at the YMCA Peace Week Speak Off on Thursday night.

Good luck to Keely Brothers who is participating in a gymnastics competition this weekend in St. John’s.

Mme. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is doing Christmas art projects. They enjoyed the presentation about washing their hands by the school nurse.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is very excited for Kassidy who became a big sister again on Sunday. Her little brother’s name is Thackary. They are also very excited for Mrs. Hodder who is having her baby today. We miss you!

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is learning the letter “w” and learning sets of 1,2,3. They also had a puppet show this week. They made their own puppets for the show.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about the sun this week.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about needs and wants in social studies. They have started practicing for the Christmas concert. They are doing addition in math.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning symbols in language and about seeds in science.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is learning about structures and buildings in science. They have been working on creating buildings out of Legos.  They are also collecting money to give to an orphanage in Haiti.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is watching a movie in religion class. The grade 6’s went to the skills challenge yesterday with the junior high students.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class is having a great time in St. John’s today. The grade 8 and 9’s are working on a novel study on the “Pearl”. The grade 7’s had a social studies test this week about the people who lived in Canada before it became a country.

This week was bullying awareness week. Classes did special activities and the Student Leadership Council prepared a short play for the primary classes on bullying.

Last week Mrs. Maureen Mennie visited our school and spoke to Mrs. George’s grade 1 class and Mr.  Hancock’s grade 5, 6 and 7 social studies classes about Remembrance Day.

Last Friday Ms. Bennett, Anna MacKenzie, Liam Dawe, and Chloe Colbourne went to the long term care centre’s Department of Veteran Affairs unit. They handed out cards, poetry, and pictures of remembrance to the veterans.

This week we welcome some nursing students Tonya Hume, Vicki Jennings, Joshua Penney, and Mike Reid into our junior kindergarten program.

Our used cell phone campaign and penny drive for the Haitian orphanage is now over. Thank you to everyone who helped out and donated.

Operation Christmas Child was a huge success. We will have a total count for next week.

Today is Mickey Mouse’s Birthday. We are having a Disney theme day and raising money for the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Report cards went home today. We hope you all did well.

The girls’ basketball team is having a recycling drive on Saturday to raise money for new equipment. The team will be going door to door collecting recyclables and they can also be dropped off to the school from 10 am to 4 pm.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Kennedi Boland, Caylie Blake, Olivia Park and Bethany Whelan who skated last weekend at the 2012 Skate Canada NL in St. John’s. All the girls skated very well. Olivia Park was selected to read the skaters pledge at the opening ceremony. Caylie received a silver medal in the Pre-Juvenile Ladies’ Category and Bethany won gold in the Juvenile Ladies’ Category. Bethany also won the Section merit Award for the most outstanding performance at the competition.

This week Colemans is a star of the week! Thank you to Colemans who donated $500 to our school breakfast program for their breakfast promotion for “Kids Eat Healthy”.

From The Classrooms

The junior kindergarten classes are still learning about bats and other nocturnal animals.

Mme. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class are learning about healthy snacks. They enjoyed the long weekend.

Ms. Morall’s Kindergarten English class is learning about animals in science. They are making a zoo out of plasticine. They are learning about the letter “w”.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is making figures out of plasticine. They are learning about the letter “v”.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class has packed their boxes for Operation Christmas Child. They are learning a new song for the Christmas concert. They are learning the parts of the body.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is starting a new unit about needs and wants. They started a new unit in math about addition and subtraction up to 12.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is comparing numbers in math and talking about ways we can protect the environment.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is participating in a healthy snack challenge this week. They have also been learning about bullying.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is working on Remembrance Day posters. They have started a novel study on the book “Holes”.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class is very excited about their trip next week. The grade 7’s are creating brochures about school and working on a novel study on “Silverwing” in language class.

On Friday the prayer group and Mrs. Coleman did a special prayer service for the Blessed Sacrament at All Hallows Church with the JK to Grade 2 classes.

The grade 6-9 leaf raking fundraiser was a huge success. The students, teachers and families raised $1800 for their trip to St. John’s. Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraiser.

On Sunday, Tara Manuel, Michael Rigler and Gina Spencer hosted a puppet show in our school called “St. George and the Dragon”. The show raised $277 for our playground project. Thank you to everyone who came to see the show.

On Tuesday we had a pancake breakfast. Thank you to Mrs. King, Ms. Morrall, Mrs. McCarthy, Mr. Taaffe and Ms. Vincent for helping out and serving the pancakes.

On Thursday we had our annual Remembrance Day service at All Hallows. Thank you to Mr. Gillard for organizing, Mrs. McHugh for conducting the bands, Mr. Graham for leading the choir and all the classes and special guests for being with us.

We have no school today for the Remembrance Day holiday.

Don’t forget we are still collecting used cell phones and pennies for the Haitian Orphanage.

Congratulations to Jenna Yetman who will be representing 511 Humber Air Cadets in a provincial speak off in December.

Congratulations to Kennedi Boland, Abigail Companion, Bethany Whelan, Caylie Blake and Anna Brake who participated in a Synchro Skating seminar at the Pepsi Centre last Saturday.

 
 
From The Classrooms

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about hats this week. They made crosses out of egg cartons for Remembrance Day. 

Mme. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is doing their Remembrance Day activities. They are excited about the long weekend.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is learning the letter “v” in printing. They made arches for Remembrance Day. They are learning about Canadian soldiers who fought in the war. Emily and Brody’s plants are growing.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class was busy this week learning about Remembrance Day and reading books about why we wear a poppy.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class was learning about Remembrance Day and making wreathes. In math they are grouping and adding. They are also making books in French. They would like to thank everyone for the Operation Christmas Child donations.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is sorting items for Operation Christmas Child. They are learning about body parts in French and they are writing about Remembrance Day. This week they did live broadcasts with the French Immersion students about Operation Christmas Child.

Ms. Park’s grade two class learning about equal and unequal groups in math. They had a class pizza party this week as part of the Coleman’s Halloween colouring contest.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class spent the week preparing and learning about Remembrance Day. In math they are working on addition and subtraction.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class have a math test coming up. They have been busy in band practicing for the Remembrance Day service.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class have been very hard at work this week. They have started practicing their presentations and job skills for the Skills Challenge in two weeks. The robotics team has almost finished all the missions and are now working on the project. The TV video team visited Colemans on Wednesday and interviewed people about produce.
Coming Up
Next week is Bullying Awareness Week. We are doing class activities and the Student Leadership Council will be doing a special presentation on Thursday.

Friday, November 18, is Mickey Mouse’s birthday! We will be celebrating with a Disney Theme Day. The cost is $1 for the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Report cards will also be going home on November 18. With parent teacher night on Tuesday, November 22. The Intermediate Skills Challenge is November 26 in Mount Pearl.
