There is always something new and exciting happing at Immaculate Heart of Mary School, and this week has been no different. Staff and students have been participating in numerous educational and fun activities.

Over the past weekend, our first girls' basketball practice took place. Many talented young ladies attended and would like to thank Mr. Whelan for coaching their team.

The Grade 7-Level I students had a wonderful field trip to Bonne Bay Pond. They would like to thank Dr. Mahmood for the delicious food he prepared for the group. A great time was had by all.

We would like to extend best wishes to Ms. Kimberley Stead and Ms. Tanya Morrissey who finished their Occupational Health and Safety work placement at our school today. Their hard work in helping to make improvements in health and safety at our school is very much appreciated.

On Monday, Constable Alexander visited our school and made a special appearance in our Media Center. The students enjoyed viewing his live message from the center. We would like to extend a thank-you to him for visiting our school.

Wednesday, the students of Immaculate Heart of Mary School celebrated and took part in activities for National Tree Day. One activity that students took part in was planting seedlings outside our school. Mrs. George made a tall tree inside the school for all students to decorate with self-made leaves, all in our recognition/celebration of National Tree Day.

As a part of National Forest Week, Ms. Neary's Grade 5/6 class attended the opening ceremonies held at Margaret Bowater Park. Students took part in lots of fun educational activities like; learning about search and rescue animals, fire prevention, and getting to plant their very own seedlings in the park. They spent the whole day in the park and had so much fun! 

Wednesday also brought the appearance of a special guest to our school. Mrs. Donna Ball was kind enough to talk with the students of I.H.M.S. on her interactions with Terry Fox. She was Terry Fox's pen pal throughout his battle with cancer. Students sat and listened to the remarkable stories she had to share. We would like to thank her for coming to our school. Mrs. George did a broadcast on Terry Fox for our whole school to watch.

We would like to extend a thank-you to Mr. Aubrey Sanders who did a running clinic with our running club. The Running Club will be heading to C.C. Loughlin on Wednesday for their first meet.

On Thursday students had a casual day and participated in a walk around our school to remember and recognize Terry Fox’s struggle.

Today is our Medical Theme Day. Medical Theme Day was in aid of The Western Memorial Regional Hospital Foundation. When you took a look around our school today you can find students dressed up as both medical professionals and patients.


Next Week’s Reminders

Monday will bring the beginning of the Thanksgiving Day Food Drive. Each classroom will have a different type of food to collect, and the food drive will span over the course of the week and end on Friday.

Brad Dyke and Shane Nolan, two nursing students, will be visiting the Grade 3 / 4 class to talk about healthy living.

Monday means the Veggie Orders are due. Veggie Orders will be distributed on Wednesday from our cafeteria.

 
Class News

The Junior Kindergartens:  The JK's did some apple taste testing and painted some apples with colours they thought represented their favourite flavours. They were also excited to paint their leaves for our National Tree Day tree.

Ms. Dwyer's Kindergarten class: The Kindergartens are happy to inform us they working on their posters for the upcoming Foster Family Week. They are learning about the letter Ee and are having loads of fun with patterns in Mathematics.

Mme. Perez-Diaz's French Immersion Kindergarten Class: The Kindergarten class is currently exploring healthy choices in their Health class. The healthy choice they have been discussing are apples with apple tasting and apple art.  

Mme. Mondoux’s grade one and two class:  The Grade One French Immersion class is learning about increasing patterns in Mathematics. The Grade Two class is discussing environmental changes in Social Studies.

Mrs. George's Grade One English class: The English grade one class is currently learning about healthy snacks and exploring patterning in Mathematics.

Ms. Park’s Grade Two class: The Grade Two’s made a Fall class book, were learning about increasing patterns in Mathematics, and learning about life cycles in Science.

Ms. Payne's Grade Three and Four Class: Grade Three and Four’s will be taking a field trip to Little Rapids on Monday. They will be leaving at 10:00a.m.

Ms. Neary's Grade Five and Six Class: The Grade 5/6 class are still pretty excited for their trip to Margret Bowater Park this past week for National Tree Day. The Grade 5/6's had lots of fun learning about trees and how to protect trees in the future. The Grade 5/6's had an amazing day and would like to thank their guides from the Model Forest.

Mr. Hancock's Junior High and Level One class: The Junior High Students and Level One class are excited to announce they had instruction this week on photography skills. They would like to thank Mr. Spencer for this wonderful opportunity. They are also happy to report they are starting Lego Robotics in Technology. Finally, they are getting prepared for the upcoming Skills Canada.

School is back in full swing at Immaculate Heart of Mary, and so far this year students are participating in many interesting and educational activities.





The Media Center opened this week, and live broadcasts are happening each day. The Media Center is a student operated activity.

Immaculate Heart of Mary School would like to thank the following students and teachers for their extra efforts in all of our extra-curricular activities:

Many thanks go out to Miss Payne and Mr. Gillard who are volunteering their time with the Cross Country Running club. If any students would like to become a member they meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00p.m. in the gymnasium.

We would like to extend thanks to Ms. Neary and Mme. Mondoux for their work with the Green Team. There are now composting bins in every classroom and the Green Team would like to advise staff and students these bins are only for perishable, decomposable waste. If any I.H.M.S student would like to be a part of the Green Team they can get into contact with Ms. Neary.

Our school would like to extend a very special thank-you to Ms. April Dakins, the public health nurse. Ms. Dakins spoke about the role of the public health nurse during I.H.M.S.’s curriculum night. We would also like to thank all of the parents who came to curriculum night.

Finally, we would like to thank the following students who helped in our Library this past summer. Thank-you to MacKenzie Brothers, Kiya Morrissey, Claire Reynolds and Maria Reynolds for your hard work.


The past week’s activities and programs:

Monday: The Breakfast Program began on Monday and will run every day. It opens daily at 7:30 a.m. and runs until 8:20a.m. The Breakfast Program is looking for parent and community volunteers. If you are able to help, please contact the office.

Wednesday afternoon:  The Enrichment group went rafting down the Humber River. Our school would like to thank Mr. Gillard, Mr. Hancock, and Ms. Meade for accompanying the group. We would also like to thank Mrs. Reynolds, Mrs. Murphy-Goodridge, and Mrs. Brothers who provided transportation. 
  
From The Classrooms

The Junior Kindergartens: The Junior Kindergartens are currently learning about friendship. Activities surrounding this subject have included; making friendship salad, teachings on how to be a good friend, and making friendship rainbows.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergartens are exploring the world of farm animals. The children in this class are happy to report they really enjoy learning about animals and their favorite barn-yard animal is the pig.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s Kindergarten French Immersion class: The class is learning a lot of new French vocabulary this week. Bien fait!

Mme. Mondoux grade one and two class French Immersion classes: The grade one French Immersion class would like to extend a Happy Birthday to Brandon Brake! In French Immersion grade one health, the students are learning how to wash their hands and brush their teeth properly. The French Immersion grade two’s would like to extend a Happy Birthday to Jack Matthews. The grade two French immersion class is currently reviewing French verbs and nouns.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class: The first grade class is learning about friendship and what that entails. They are learning patterns in Mathematics as well.

Ms. Park’s grade two class: In Science, the grade two’s are learning about butterfly larva. In Mathematics they are continuing to learn about patterns. In Art, the class is creating apple tree paintings.

Ms. Payne’s grade three and four class: The grade three and four class is having a multiplication test every Friday. The class is preparing for a possible field trip. Details to come!

Ms. Neary’s grade five and six class: The grade fives and sixes would like to welcome new student Cameron Peddle. The grade five and sixes are excited to share they are currently learning about robotics in Technology class.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level one class: The Junior high students are really excited they had the opportunity to learn about rafting this past week.

Everyone at Immaculate Heart of Mary School is happy to be back. We will be keeping you updated every week with current classroom happenings as well as community involvement.

Immaculate Heart of Mary School would like to welcome new and returning staff and students back for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. Our school would also like to extend an extra welcome to four Brazilian students; Gabreielli Renata B. da Silva,Matheus de Souza Simoes Viante,Dayana Carla Batiste de Lima, and Luam Henrique Marcolino Dias, who have arrived to our school. We hope they will enjoy their stay with us.
All the staff and students would like to send thanks to Ms. Cindy Kawaja who has been helping keep I.H.M.S beautiful by attending to our flower garden out front.
Another thank-you being passed along is to Bishop Hundt for officiating our school opening mass, Friday, September 7th.
 
Over the summer I.H.M.S. had a student who excelled in an extra-curricular heritage/ history project. Gina Spencer, in grade 5, competed in a country wide contest held by Canada’s History for Kids, and has been chosen out of hundreds of applicants. Gina’s video was voted as one of the top thirty videos in Canada! Gina’s project features an informational video on catholic educators, The Presentation Sisters of Newfoundland and Labrador. Gina Spencer will find out if her video and project will advance to the finals in October, when judges will choose the top six projects in Canada. Good luck Gina!
 
Over the past weekend, Gina Spencer and Mr. Gary Graham lent their musical talents to the Children’s Wish Foundation. Our school would like to congratulate them on their efforts and on attending such an important event.
 
This week many events will be taking place for I.H.M.S. Students, these events include:
 
Thursday: Immaculate Heart of Mary School is proud to celebrate its’ 13th Birthday. To commemorate this anniversary students and faculty will participate in a theme day as well as a birthday party in the gymnasium.
 
Friday: Mr. Spencer’s grade 9 Science students are participating in the Trading Books for Boats program held by the Bay of Islands Marina.

Wednesday: Teachers will be hosting a curriculum night on September 19th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. We welcome all parents to come along and see what teachers will cover in your child’s class this year.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten class: The Kindergartens are happy to inform us they are getting use to Kindergarten and learning new things. Letter of the week is I.

Ms. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class: The French Immersion grade one’s are currently exploring communication, patterning in Mathematics and participating in healthy lifestyle activities.

Ms. Mondoux grade one and two class: The grade one and two French Immersion class is happy to announce three birthdays this week. Birthday salutations go out to Jack Matthews, Alexander Card and Benjamin Card.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class: The English grade one class is currently learning about healthy snacks and exploring patterning in Mathematics.

Ms. Park’s grade two class: The grade twos report they are currently learning about life cycles in Science, furthering their knowledge in patterns, and creating acrostic poems for the I.H.M.S. anniversary on Thursday.

Ms. Payne’s grade three and four class: The grade threes and fours would like to extend a thank-you to Max Chrappa’s Grandmother for her kind gesture. Max’s grandmother brought in fresh, delicious apples for his classmates to enjoy. Ms. Payne would like to inform parents of the Comfy Chair Schedule for September. The schedule allows for all students to have a fair turns sitting in the awesome chair during mornings, recess, and lunch.

Ms. Neary’s grade five and six class: The grade five and sixes are excited and preparing for the 13th anniversary of I.H.M.S. Students have been preparing costumes and creating ideas in preparation for the special day.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level one class: The junior high school students are excited to be back at school. The junior high school students are excited to welcome their new classmates from Brazil. This week the grade 9’s will be travelling to the marina in Curling to attend the Books for Boats program.
