Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (25/4/18)

The Student Leadership Council completed the Cash for Cups Campaign this week for the City of Corner Brook. We would like to thank our school families for their support. We collected over 4,500 cups this year!
On Thursday evening we held our annual Junior High Speak Off. Representatives from the Junior High class included: Fatima Alkhalil, Myles Calbert, Max Chrappa, Carly Johannesen, Christian Mouland, Kori Noel, Max Pittman, and Jack Richardson. Our judges for the evening included: Mrs. Sandee Harnum, Ms. Linda Chaisson, and Mr. Lenny Benoit.  The overall winner was Fatima Alkhalil who spoke on bullying.
Next week is school spirit week hosted by the Student Leadership Council. We will celebrate Character Monday, Wacky Wednesday, Decades Thursday, and Formal Friday.
The school photographer will visit on Tuesday to complete the group photos for the yearbook.
Our school is preparing for an upcoming grade six ultimate Frisbee tournament.

Congratulations to Daley Merrigan who placed fifth for Level I students at the National Chess Championships last weekend in St. John’s.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are preparing for the school musical and learning new songs. They are  enjoying the outdoors and their greenhouse sessions.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class enjoyed visiting grade one this week during the orientation sessions. They learned about fire flies in science this week.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class has started a new writing project called wonderful me. They are also learning about Mi’kmaq in social studies.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is enjoying spending time in the greenhouse. The sunflowers they planted in the classroom are growing very tall and will soon be ready for transplanting. The class aquaponics system is beginning to sprout and the fish are growing larger.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is enjoying their greenhouse sessions. They are watching their sunflowers grow in their classroom. They love spring!
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is excited to see lots of sprouts growing in their aquaponics system. They are enjoying their compost experiment as well.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is excited to announce their caterpillars arrived last week. They are eagerly watching them as they start their first stage of development.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class has nearly 30 tomato plants growing! It won’t be long and they will find out which plants have spent some time in space.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is busy preparing for the upcoming science fair. They are beginning their last science unit on weather.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is excited to be finished their novel study on Holes. They are looking forward to the school science fair. In art they are working on paintings that feature the sun.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is working on the upcoming science fair. They are finishing off their probability unit with carnival games.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is beginning to focus on review and the upcoming final exams. The grade nine students are learning about transformations in math. The Chemistry 2202 students are beginning organic chemistry.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (18/4/18)

Congratulations to our school who won the City of Corner Brook Achievement in Community Excellence award for Environmental Award (Organization). Mrs. King, Ms. Cunning, and Rebecca Janes represented our school at the awards ceremony on Tuesday evening. Rebecca received the award on behalf of our school.
Our Student Leadership Council is continuing to collect Cups for Cash. We currently have 2,000 cups. We would like to collect more than 4,000 this year to surpass last year’s results.
On Thursday we held a pep rally for Level I student, Daley Merrigan, who is attending the National Chess Championships in St. John’s on Sunday. During the pep rally Daley played a round of chess blindfolded against Noah Wall, and then a lightening chess round against Uriah Cull. We would like to wish Daley the best of luck!
Our school collected 316 cell phones for the annual MMSB Recycle My Cell Campaign. Thank you to all our families for their support of this initiative.
This week we celebrated World Catholic Education day. Instead of observing this event for one day, we challenged our fellow classmates to do one act of kindness each day for someone else. Rebekah Calbert officially kicked off the event on Monday in chapel.
We would like to thank our school community for once again supporting the annual Apple A Day Fundraiser. We raised a total of $22,000! Lexi Pilgrim sold the most tickets!
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Addison MacArthur, Jaxon Clarke, Olivia Brinston and Liam Brinson who received medals at the Bowling Year End Awards. Addison received medals for high average, high single, high series team and silver medal in the playoffs. She also received trophies for Bowler of the Year and Most Improved Player. Liam and Jaxon received silver medals with their team and Olivia received a gold medal with her team.
Congratulations to Zoe McCarthy who participated in the 1 km kids run at The Physical Rehab Spring Opener last Saturday morning.
Congratulations to Mrs. McCarthy who was nominated for a City of Corner Brook Achievement in Community Excellence award for Community Active Living Champion (Individual).

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are preparing for Father’s Day by making cards and crafts. They are enjoying the outdoor playground as much as they can!
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning the difference between spiders and insects. They celebrated World Catholic Education day by doing kind deeds for each other.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about the decline of the cod fishery and how life has changed since their grandparents were their age.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is happy to report that their aquaponics system is set up and running. In fact, their lettuce plants have started to sprout. They have been spending lots of time in the greenhouse and the outdoor classroom.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is enjoying watching their sunflowers grow in the classroom window. Since spring arrived they have been focusing on the environment even more than usual. Their new and final unit in science is “Animals Grow”.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is conducting a soil experiment to find out what conditions encourage compost breakdown the best.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is extremely excited to taste test their purple peacock pole beans they grew in their Little Green Thumbs Garden.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class created spring artwork this week. They have a tiny tomato plant beginning to grow and they are hopeful there will be many more.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is finishing their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Novel study in language arts. They worked very hard this week on posters for ACAP Humber Arm poster contest about how to protect our marine life.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is preparing for the upcoming school science fair. This week as part of their novel study they wrote police reports about the crime they committed that got them sentenced to Camp Green Lake.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is finishing up their math unit on probability by preparing a carnival day activities for the school.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class had a busy week. The grade nine students are learning about similar polygons. Math 3201 students are learning about financial mathematics.
Coming Up
School is closed on Monday in observance of Victoria Day.
Junior kindergarten and kindergarten English and French Immersion orientation is next Wednesday, May 23 at 1:15 pm.

The school photographer will return to school on May 29th to complete the group photos.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (1/5/18)

Mme. Ryan and Mme. Moss’ aquaponics project is well underway. The students are very excited to begin planting seeds next week. They have set up their fish tanks, ordered their equipment, and are anticipating the arrival of their fish today! Both classes hosted bake sales to aid in covering the cost of the materials. Thank you to everyone who helped with the initiative.
Students in grade six to eight participated in the Let’s Talk Science challenge at Grenfell Campus on Tuesday. Our school sent three teams to the event. The first team included: Carly Johannesen, Fatima Alkhalil, Mohamed Al-Zubaidy, and Aaron White, team two included: Rosemary Owolabi, Kira McCarthy, Keira Clarke, and Emily Payne; and team three included: Isabelle Mercier, Graham Zilkowsky, Christian Mouland, and Max Pittman. The teams performed very well.
On Tuesday we celebrated the May Crowing with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group. It was a beautiful celebration in church with our school family.
The grade six boys and girls soccer teams are participating in a tournament this weekend. The first game was on Thursday at 3 pm.
The level I to level III students travelled to St. John’s on Thursday for the Mate ROV underwater robotics competition being held at the Marine Institute. The students are competing in challenges today to maneuver their robots to complete missions in the “ocean”.
The Recycle My Cell Campaign has officially ended. Thank you to all our students, families, and community members who helped with this initiative.
Our Student Leadership Council is collecting used coffee cups for the City of Corner Brook’s Cash for Cups Campaign. Last year we recycled 4,000 cups. This year our goal is 5,000!
We have fourteen students participating in the Regional Heritage Fair at Corner Brook Intermediate on Saturday. Our participants include: Fatima Alkhalil, Luke Coleman, Keira Clarke, Ava Hodder, Erica Kennedy, Kira McCarthy, Charlotte Mercier, Christian Mouland, CarlyRae Mouland, Alister MacDonnell, Kate Murphy, Max Pittman, Gabriel Rowsell and Brooke Watton. Public viewing will take place between 1:45-2:45 pm, with the awards scheduled to begin at 3 pm.
Apple A Day Tickets are now on sale! Tickets are $20 each. There are five days of prize draws and each ticket is entered in all five draws. Prizes include: an apple TV, apple watch, an iphone 8, an ipad, and a 13inch Macbook air. There are also prizes for the seller of each winning ticket, and there will be an ipad draw for students selling more than 20 tickets. For every 20 tickets sold, the student will have his or her name entered in the draw. The draws begin on May 7th.

Congratulations to Charlotte Mercier who cut and donated her hair for Cancer this week.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about insects and bugs and making a terrarium for worms and snails. They are enjoying their outside play.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is continuing their simple addition in math. They taste tested their garden tomatoes this week. They are learning about the dangers of ocean pollution to animals.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about plant parts in science and doing lots of planting themselves. They were sad that their class fish, Pickle, died. They wrote about him in their journals and placed him in their our school’s outdoor classroom where he is surrounded by nature.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class has been learning about how animals care for their babies. They are excited to see the plants that they have planted have already sprouted.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is learning about measurement in math. They are continuing their study of matter in science. They are really enjoying working in the greenhouse.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class has begun their aquaponics project. The students are very excited to start planting. Their class fish are arriving today!
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is started their second novel study for the year. The students are excited to be reading Pippi Longstocking.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class is preparing presentations in social studies. They are doing a great job writing about sequencing in language arts. They also wrote beautiful descriptive poems.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is continuing to work on their STEM project in science. They are excited to do a chocolate taste test next week for their novel study on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class wrote essays this week about what they would do if they were mayor of the City of Corner Brook for a day. The students had a great time at the Let’s Talk Science Competition at Grenfell Campus on Tuesday.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is continuing their novel study discussion groups on the book The City of Ember. The students enjoyed the Let’s Talk Science activities on Tuesday.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class would like to wish the Level 1 to Level 3 students good luck in the Underwater Robotics Competition today in St. John’s. The students are finishing off their unit on Shakespeare in language arts.

Grade 5/6 New's article - Lion's Roar (27/4/18)

We would like to congratulate the junior and senior high class for their performances in the Western Regional Drama Festival in Springdale last week. The junior high students presented their play “The Great American Talent Show” and the senior high class presented their play “If Girls Asked Boys for Dates”. The students had a great time and put off wonderful shows. They would like to thank their teacher directors: Mme. Moss, Ms. Cunning, Ms. Guy and Mrs. McCarthy; as well as Isac Burton, Myles Calbert, and Ryan Miller who assisted with lights and sound.
IHMS hosted a grade five boys’ soccer tournament last weekend. The IHMS team won gold medals and were undefeated in the tournament. We would like to thank Mr. Ryley and Mr. Drew Nadon who coached the team. We also would like to thank our many parents and volunteer who supported the tournament.
Students and staff celebrated Earth Day on Monday. We celebrated by wearing blue, green, and brown and taking part in activities that show we care about our planet.
Our annual Heritage Fair was held on Wednesday morning. We would like to thank all students for the amazing projects they presented. Our judges for the event were Natasha Wells, Mme. Marie Claude Renard, Mrs. Marie Ryan , Mr. Drew Nadon, Mr. Ryley Nadon, and Mrs. McCarthy. At the end of the fair the judges awarded 13 medals for outstanding projects. Medal winners included: Fatima Alkhalil, Keira Clarke, Ava Hodder, Erica Kennedy, Carly Johannesen, Charlotte Mercier, Christian Mouland, CarlyRae Mouland, Alister MacDonnell, Kate Murphy, Max Pittman, Gabriel Rowsell and Lily Smallwood.
Mme. Moss’ French Immersion class held a bake sale on Wednesday at recess in aid of their Aquaponics project. The class raised $100 towards their project. They are very excited to pilot this new program in the school.
The grade two class counted and collected over 20,000 plastic bags for the Plastic Grab Bag Challenge. The bags were delivered by the class to Walmart on Thursday morning.
Junior Kindergarten and kindergarten parent information session took place in our school cafeteria on Thursday evening.

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are  having a lot of fun in the greenhouse. They are exploring their senses. Their ECE students finished their work placement this week.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is doing spring activities and drawing pictures. They are enjoying getting outside in the warmer temperatures.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class really enjoyed their Earth Day and greenhouse activities this week. They have started their geometry unit in math.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is excited about starting up aquaponics in their classroom. The grade one’s are making books and the grade twos are learning about measurement this week.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is loving the spring weather. They enjoyed their greenhouse visit and are looking forward to their new science unit: Animals Grow!
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class were very excited to see the Heritage Fair. The grade four to six students were proud to show off their French projects for parents and judges.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class garden is flourishing! Their purple peacock beans have started to grow. They can’t wait to see their kale and basil sprout.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class is buzzing about all the interesting topics at the heritage fair on Wednesday. They are using clay and nets to make 3D shapes in math.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class had a great time at the school heritage fair on Wednesday morning. They are looking forward to starting the spring season in the greenhouse.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is writing essays about why they would like to be Mayor of the City of Corner Brook. They realize that it is a lot of responsibility for one person. They are also studying for the upcoming Let’s Talk Science Challenge.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class had a great time at the Western Regional Drama Festival in Springdale last weekend. The students participated in some STEM activities this week to prepare for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge. They are continuing to work on probability in math.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is continuing to build their ROV for the Underwater Robotics Competition. Math 1201 students are completing their chapter on quadratic equations and Biology 2201 students are beginning to learn about the digestive system.
Coming Up
The Underwater robotics for students will travel to St. John’s on Thursday for the Mate ROV competition.

Grade 6-8 students will take part in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge at Grenfell College on Friday.
Grace Coleman, McKinley Targett and Emma Tran work with the sand in Junior Kindergarten class this week. The class had fun making their own.
 Grade two students Zachery Burden and Makayla Reddy sort through and count plastic bags as part of the Plastic Grab Bag Challenge the class organized this year. They collected over 20,000 plastic bags for recycling.
