Bridgett Sparkes (grade 3) and Ms. Park slide down a small hill. Sliding was one of many outdoor activities the students and staff took part in for Winter Carnival Day last week.

The grade 5 basketball team won our school’s first ever tournament. They are the Western Region Provincial winners! On Monday we will officially raise our new banner. Way to go, girls!

This week was IHMS Spirit Week. On Tuesday it was blue day and on Wednesday we had a sock hop at lunch. Today we have casual day in support of Cancer research.

Last weekend’s NLBA basketball tournament was a huge success! Thank you to Ms. Dutton, Mr. Taaffe, all the parents, teachers, officals and students for a great weekend.

This week there was a Pascal Math Competition for grades 6 and 9. We hope you all did well!

On Tuesday evening Maria Reynolds participated in the Winter Carnival Are You Smarter Than a Corner Brook 5th Grader? She did an awesome job! The questions were very hard.

On Thursday evening our school hosted the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee. Thank you to Ms. Park for organizing it. Mrs. McCarthy read out the words. Thank you to Mr. Peter Antle and Mr. Brian McHugh for judging. Our school was represented by: Hailey Colbourne, Alex Williams, Maria Reynolds, Hannah Sparkes, Aaron Hancock and William Goodridge.

David Hynes from Mount Mariah was the winner of the Ipad draw. Enjoy!

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Nicola du Toit, Vanessa Ford, Hannah Sparkes, Maria Reynolds and Alex Williams who won Player of The Game awards at the basketball tournament last weekend. Maria Reynolds won Most Valuable Player for the tournament.

Congratulations to Carly McGrath and McKenzie Neilson from Sacred Heart who won the Fun Ball Competition. Alex Williams and Nicola du Toit were runners up.

Congratulations to Caylie Blake on winning a lip sync competition this week.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are doing winter activities and science exploration. Their teachers are doing first aid training this weekend.

The kindergarten French Immersion class is making snowman crafts and are learning addition.

The kindergarten English class is celebrating spirit day. They are busy getting ready for family fun day. They welcome Miss Brittany Jesso to their class. Miss Jesso is doing observation work for her human dynamics class. She is a graduate of IHMS.

The grade one class is learning how to skip count. They really enjoyed the sock hop on Wednesday.

The grade two class is starting a new chapter in math. They are doing a book study on the mitten. They are working on the letter “r” in handwriting.

The grade three and four class had their final day of cross country skiing on Tuesday. They are learning about fractions. In language arts they are planning their own commercials. They made a donation of $100 to World Vision.

The grade five and six class has started a novel study on Bridge to Terrabithia. They are starting a new unit in science about motion.

The junior high class had a lot of fun planning winter carnival day last week. They are working on their school video in the media centre and building popsicle stick bridges for a competition in two weeks.

Coming Up

IHMS Winter Carnival Fun Day is tomorrow! JoDo the clown will be performing from 12:30-3:30. There will be lots of games, food, prizes and activities and for kids.

We are accepting registration for September 2011 for JK-Level 1 including French Immersion in K and grade 1. For more information call Mrs. Kennedy in the office.

On Monday it was Valentine’s Day and the 100th day of school. We had a lot of fun sending valentines and counting to 100.

On Wednesday Miss Dutton attended a workshop for social studies teachers and on Thursday Mrs. McHugh attended a workshop for Art teachers.

We encourage everyone to try Tricky Taaffe’s math question of the week. They are pretty hard. We are still not sure what a “winkle” or a “wonkle” is!

It was National Sweater Day on Thursday. Everyone wore lots of bright coloured sweaters. We turned down the heat to help fight against global warming.

Our school is hosting the Western Provincial Grade 5 Girls’ Basketball Tournament. The tournament begins today in our school with a game at 3 and another one at 4:30. Sacred Heart, St. Gerard’s, Immaculate Heart and Stephenville Primary are all competing. Go girls! Our junior high class was busy all week making banners for the teams and today we had a pep rally. Good luck to all.

Some exciting news is that our school choir will be singing tonight at the Winter Carnival opening ceremonies at city hall.

This week was Teacher Appreciation Week. On Tuesday we had a snow day. We hope all the teachers appreciated the day off! As well many parents cooked lunches for the staff and covered recess and lunch duty to give the teachers a break.

Stars of the Week

Patrick Davis will be representing out school on the Youth Advisory Council for the City of Corner Brook.

Abigail Companion won Most Valuable Player in last weekend’s RNC basketball tournament at St. Gerard’s. The girls all played extremely well. Congratulations!

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are doing winter activities and having a first aid presentation.

The kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about foods in the milk group in French.

The kindergarten English class was excited to celebrate the 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day on Monday. They are working on subtraction in math and cooperation in social studies.

The grade one class had a fun time celebrating the 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day. This week they are writing winter stories.

The grade two class is starting the letter “k” in handwriting. They are learning about solids in science and making their own story problems in math.

The grade three and four class had a bake sale for World Vision and raised $150. They are excited for the school spelling bee next week.

The grade five and six class had a wonderful Valentine cake Mrs. McCarthy made for them. They had a great time on IHMS winter carnival fun day.

The junior high class has begun building their bridges out of popsicle sticks. They had an engineer guest speaker named Mr. Carl King come in and talk to them about bridge design. They also organized the IHMS winter carnival fun day. Way to go!

Coming Up

Monday is a Professional Development Day for teachers. All students have no school.

Tuesday is Winter Carnival’s Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? Maria Reynolds will represent our school at this event.

On Thursday the Annual Winter Carnival Spelling Bee will be held at our school beginning at 7 pm.

Next week is IHMS Spirit Week there will be many fun activities all week long.

Last week we raised $100 for the Bay of Island’s SPCA from our casual day money. Great everyone!

On Monday Carla du Toit and Sarah Keeping were interviewed by CBC about the school cell phone campaign. They were awesome! We received our cheque for winning the campaign and a Samsung Reclaim phone with a free one year plan.

The girl’s basketball team grades 4 and 5 played against Sacred Heart in our gymnasium on Wednesday. Everyone played great. Thank you to Mr. George for refereeing the game.

Our gym floor is being repaired this week and smoothed out. Also, a new tabletop scoreboard has been donated to the school. We will get to use it for our upcoming basketball tournament on February 18th.

We had a test run of our IHMS channel on Wednesday. We will soon have our own channel sent directly into each classroom in the school. Thank you to Mrs. McCarthy, Mr. Hancock, Mr. Reynolds and Mr.Garry Parsons from CBC for helping test out the channel.

The junior high report cards went home on Wednesday. We hope you did great!

Today the grade 3 and 4 class is having a Valentine’s Day cookie sale. Yum! Also, the Student Leadership Council has been selling pre-orders for valentine hearts to be given out on Monday.

Mr. Taaffe has started a math problem of the week. Watch the IHMS channel for the problem or get a copy at the office. Students are encouraged to try and answer the question each week.

This weekend the girl’s basketball team is participating in the RNC basketball tournament at St. Gerard’s. Hope to see you all there.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Alex Williams and Olivia Park who participated in a basketball camp at Corner Brook Regional High last weekend. Alex won the Free Throw Championship for grades 4,5, and 6 and a prize of $10.

Congratulations to Keely Brothers who won a silver medal in the Frosty Flip Gymnastics Competition in St. John’s. She placed 4th on the floor, 5th on beam and 5th overall. Excellent job!

Congratulations to Wesley Toraville who won a medal at the Timbit Hockey Tournament in Port Aux Basques this past weekend.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten classes are having a Valentine’s Day party next Monday. Yum, I hope there’s cake. They are also celebrating the 100th day of school. They are doing outdoor science activities and they are doing winter arts and crafts.

The Kindergarten English class is working on the letter “y” and learning about winter activities.

The Kindergarten French Immersion class is continuing to learn how to print numbers and letters. They made holders for their valentines.

The grade one class is learning how to read and record numbers in math and in social studies they are learning about constructed and natural features in our city, province and country.

The grade two class has started a new unit in science and are learning new math strategies. They are making 100th day school t-shirts.

The grade three and four class worked hard this week on bake sale posters. They went skiing on Tuesday and have ordered their new SMARTboard. In language class they are learning about how movies are made.

The grade five and six class is making recycled art in art class. They are writing character sketches in language arts and are busy preparing for the school spelling bee.

The junior high class is planning their popsicle stick bridges in enrichment. They are painting posters for the upcoming basketball tournament being held at our school on February 18th and 19th.

Coming Up

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week and IHMS Spirit Week. Monday is the 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day.

February 17th is National Sweater Day and our school Winter Carnival Day. On National Sweater Day everyone is asked to turn down the heat and put on a sweater.

On February 18th the school choir will sing at the Winter Carnival opening at City Hall at 6:00 pm.

February 26th is IHMS Family Fun Day. Many parents and staff are working very hard to make this day lots of fun.

Kindergarten English and French Immersion orientation session at the hospital last week.

This week was very exciting at IHMS.

A member of the community anonymously donated $5,000 to our community playground project. We now have $12,500. Everyday we get closer to playing on swings and sliding down slides! The same donor also donated the money needed to purchase a SMARTboard for the grade 3 and 4 class. Everyone is very excited. Thank you for your generosity.

This week we also found out we were the Western Region winners in the MMSB cell phone recycling campaign. We won $1,000 for our outdoor classroom. Also we found out we were the national winners for recycling 450 cell phones. We won an extra $500 and several prizes, including a cell phone. Thank you to all the families and community groups who helped us collect so many phones!

On Monday the public health nurse did a session with the grade 3 and 4 class on hygiene.

Our Family Fun Day event planning is going well. We have lots of fun activities and games planned.

On Wednesday Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group did a praise and worship with all students and staff for Saint Valentine’s Day.

The girl’s basketball team had a game at St. Gerard’s on Wednesday. They did great.

The grade 3 and 4 class collected recyclables all week for their class fundraiser.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten classes made nice ground hog headbands and pop-ups for Ground Hog Day. They are also getting ready for Valentine’s Day.

The Kindergarten English class is working on the letter “y”. They are learning to subtract in math.

The Kindergarten French Immersion class made beautiful snowman crafts. They are working on addition in math.

The grade one class is learning how objects are made out of different materials. In religion class they are learning about different names for God. They welcome to their class a new pet. He is a marbled salamander named Stripes.

The grade two class is making winter art. They enjoyed Ground Hog Day and are looking forward to Valentine’s Day.

The grade three and four class is playing tennis in gym class. In math they are making graphs from the surveys they made. In science they are studying sound and making slide shows in computers. In language class they are learning how movies are made.

The grade five and six class is doing recyclable art and starting a new unit in math. They are learning about their grandparent’s childhood in social studies.

The junior high class is all finished their midterm exams. They are finished filming their school video and are now starting to edit the film. They are beginning to work on their popsicle stick bridges.

Coming Up

Chocolate heart pre-orders are starting next week for Valentine’s Day. They will cost $0.25.

The Junior High Report Cards go home on February 9.

The girl’s basketball team is having a tournament beginning next Thursday.

The grade 3 and 4 cookie sale is February 11.

February 26th is IHMS Family Fun Day. Many parents and staff are working very hard to make this day lots of fun.
