Mrs. King voted "World’s Best Principal"

In honor of the Olympics, the grade one class made Olympic “torches” then presented Mrs. King with a gold (cookie) medal for being the world’s best principal. (L-R) Liam Dawe, William Bennett, McKenna Batstone, Mrs. King, Alaura Alexander, Jack Ryan, Chenoah Park and Tamara Campbell.

Last Thursday IHMS had an Olympic Fun Day. Everybody had fun building an igloo snow sculpture and playing winter sports and games. Thank you to Ms. Dutton and the Junior High students for organizing our fun day. Also thank you to Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Brothers for taking pictures.

On Friday morning we had a school spelling bee for grades 4 to 6 students. Six students were chosen to represent our school at the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee. Grade 4 students MacKenzie Brothers and Katerina Hamann, Grade 5 students Abigail Companion and Jenna Yetman, and grade 6 students Claire Reynolds and Sarah Keeping were chosen from our school. Thank you to Mrs. McCarthy for organizing, Mrs. McHugh and Mrs. George for judging and Mr. Hancock for timing the students for this event.

The grade 3 and 4 students last Sunday had a bible presentation at All Hallows Parish. They accepted their first bible.

On Monday we had a Winter Carnival Day while the teachers had a professional development day. Yesterday our girl’s basketball team competed in an invitational tournament at Humber Elementary. The girls played very well. This tournament continues on Friday and Saturday.


Also on Thursday our school hosted the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee. Congratulations to all spellers.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are starting the number 6 and making ice caverns in science.

The Kindergarten class is learning about shapes in math and learning about recycling in science.

The Grade 1 class is learning about resources in social studies and ways to be respectful. They loved the nutrition tour at Colemans this week. They are very excited to say they got to try out our school’s smart board this week while practicing with shapes.

The Grade 2 class is doing math investigation and making science experiments.

The Grade 3 and 4 class is starting a new unit called “Invisible Power”. They are also working on a colouring contest.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is excited about the spelling bee and having lots of fun playing basketball. They are learning to sew in art class and studying economics by playing a game where they have to sell lemonade in social studies.

The Junior High class is learning the phonetic alphabet and practicing using hand held radios. They are still working on their Popsicle stick bridges. They are also trying to increase their fitness by doing extra fitness activities on days when they do not have gym class.

Coming-Up
Wednesday March 3 is Math Day.

March 6 is the National Engineering and Geoscience bridge building competition for the junior high students. Their bridges will be tested to see how much weight they will hold without breaking. Also on March 6 is our school’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Pot Luck from 5-7 pm.

An Olympic Week @ IHMS!

Grade 2 class with local athlete, Matthew Young, after our Olympic pep rally last Friday afternoon.

Go Canada! IHMS had an Olympic pep rally last Friday afternoon on February 12. We cheered on team Canada with Matthew Young a local athlete. He came to help us support Canada in the Olympics. Thank you to Alex Williams, Katerina Hamann and Maria Reynolds who shared a poem they wrote to cheer on Canada.

The after school program craft group has painted a new mural in our cafeteria window. The window is painted with the Olympic rings, symbols of Olympics and the words “Go! Team Canada!”

Last weekend the girl’s basketball team took part in an invitational basketball tournament hosted by St. Gerards. Lots of teachers, students and family members were there to support them. Thank you to Ms. Dutton for coaching the team.

This week our school received 25 new computers donated by Suncor. We would like to thank Mr. Jamie Dolomount for transporting these computers from the east coast for us. We have already started using these computers in our classrooms. Thank you!

Our Valentine’s Day chocolate sale raised over $80 for our school library. Thank you to the Student Leadership Council and many other volunteers for organizing this sale.

This week was teacher appreciation week. All of our teachers felt very appreciated from the students, parents and board members. They enjoyed their treats this week.


On Tuesday we had a school pancake breakfast. It was delicious. Thank you to the Student Leadership Council for serving the pancakes! Also thank you to Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. McCarthy who cooked almost 200 pancakes!

Also on Tuesday members of the local Rotary club visited our school to talk about the importance of reading and to read books to all of our classes. They donated $350 dollars worth of books to our school. Thank you very much to the Rotary club and to the readers who came in to share the books with us.

On Wednesday our whole school attended a special mass officiated by Father Tim Moriarty for Ash Wednesday. It is now the season of lent. Many students are giving up something for lent. Unfortunately, Mrs. King says we can’t give up school for lent! So we decided on things like chocolate, ice cream and popcorn.


Yesterday was our Olympic theme day. Students dressed up as athletes and in the afternoon we played games and built a snow sculpture outside.

Today is our grade 4-6 school spelling bee. The top two spellers from each grade will go to the Corner Brook Winter Carnival Spelling Bee next week. The Winter Carnival Spelling Bee is hosted by our school on Thursday, February 25.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are working on the letter “H” and the number “6”. Last week Kyra Hodder donated nine inches of her hair to the Cancer Association. Mrs. Paula Butt read books to the Junior Kindergarten classes on Tuesday as part of the Rotary Read Along.

The Kindergarten class is doing subtraction in Math and learning about Mass in religion. Mr. Darrell Squires read books to the Kindergarten class on Tuesday as part of the Rotary Read Along.

The Grade 1 class had a guest speaker from the Department of Forestry. Michelle Hamlyn spoke to the students about conservation and the importance of the forestry as a resource. Mrs. Terri Antle read books to the grade One class on Tuesday as part of the Rotary Read Along.

The Grade 2 class is keeping track of the Olympics and graphing all the medals in math class. Mr. Mike Fleming read books to the grade Two class on Tuesday as part of the Rotary Read Along.

The Grade 3 and 4 class is excited about the Spelling Bee today. Mrs. Frieda Faour read books to the grade three and four class on Tuesday as part of the Rotary Read Along.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is practicing for the Spelling Bee today. They would like to thank Mrs. Du Toit, Mrs. King and Mrs. McCarthy for driving them to visit the Corner Brook Public library last Thursday. Also, thank you to Mrs. Sandra Batstone for giving them a tour and helping with their research on the solar system. Mr. Peter Antle read books to the grade five and six class on Tuesday as part of the Rotary Read Along.

The Junior High class is starting to build model bridges with popsicle sticks and paper glue. They enjoyed planning the Olympic sports activities and instructing the younger children at their stations. Mr. Gary Kean read books to the junior high class on Tuesday as part of the Rotary Read Along.

Coming-Up
Our 101 Dalmatians musical has arrived. Mr. Graham will be doing auditions very soon.

Professional Development day is on Monday, February 22. There will be no school for students.

Happy St. Valentine's Day

Tarik Rodrigues (grade 2) and Rose MacLeod (Kindergarten) with their completed sewing projects. These projects were completed as part of our after school program sewing group. The sewing group is headed up by Mrs. Marjorie Deckert.

Report cards went out on Wednesday. We know you all did great. Following this was parent teacher night on Thursday.

The Student Leadership Council chocolate heart sale was a success. We had over 400 orders for chocolates. They are being delivered today.

The girl’s basketball team would like to thank Mr. Hancock and Mr. George for referring their game last Wednesday. This weekend the girls have a tournament at St. Gerard’s School. Good luck and have fun.

On Monday of this week the grade 5 and 6 class had a presentation on Malaria by the Canadian Red Cross. Every 30 seconds a child dies from Malaria. Thank you to Martin Osuru and Judy Bonne for their presentation. Also on Monday the Junior Kindergarten to grade 2 students had a presentation from Mr. Everett Pitts from the Burn Center.

To celebrate nutrition month the Junior Kindergartens had a tour of Colemans Food Centre on Humber Road on Wednesday.

Yesterday the school celebrated the 100th day of the school year.

Today we are celebrating the opening of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver with a pep rally during lunch in the gym. Go team Canada!

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are learning the number 5 and celebrating Valentines Day through various types of stories, circle time, art and science activities.

The Kindergarten class had fun celebrating the 100th day of school.

The Grade 1 class celebrated the 100th day of school by doing things about the number 100 in every subject. Today they are celebrating Valentines Day with a class party.

The Grade 2 class is welcoming a new student Olivia Gallant to their classroom. They are very excited to have a new student.

The Grade 3 and 4 class had fund doing a “mad minute” with multiplication and division. They had to try and answer 20 questions in one minute. They are also working on a health challenge in Health class and colouring flags in Social Studies.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is making hand sewn stuffed animals in art class. Some of the animals they are making are lizards, monkeys, aliens and cats.

The Junior High class is doing things for National Engineering for Geoscience month in March. They are designing and building bridges out of Popsicle sticks and glue.

Coming-Up
On Tuesday we are having a school pancake breakfast to begin the season of Lent. Plain and chocolate chip pancakes will be served by the Student Leadership Council beginning at 7:45 am.

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, which begins the season of Lent. Students are encouraged to think of something they can give up for Lent.

Next week is teacher appreciation week.

IHMS Students Donate To The SPCA

IHMS students, Carla and Nicola Du Toit. donate a cheque to the SPCA. Nicola Du Toit received a cheque for $25 from the Royal Canadian Legion for an honorary mention in the Primary Colour poster contest. She donated her cheque to the SPCA to help all the cats and dogs that do not have a nice home. As well, both her and her sister have been donating money from their allowance every month since September to the SPCA.

Congratulations to the Junior High class for their participation in the Intermediate Skills Challenge in the areas of Lego Robotics and Wind Turbine Design in Mount Pearl last weekend. Our Lego Robotics team placed seventh and students Brian Mackenzie and Sarah Yetman received bronze medals for their wind turbine design.

The Student Leadership Cookie sale in aid of the library was a great success. They raised $48.00. Thank you to the students for bringing in the yummy cookies and cupcakes.

IHMS under 12 girls (in silver uniform), first basketball game against Sacred Heart school.

The U12 Girls Basketball team had their very first game this week against a team from Sacred Heart School. On Wednesday the team was joined by lots of cheering fans for their first ever game afterschool. Way to go girls! They look forward to continuing to practice and playing more games.

The chocolate hearts go on sale today. The Student Leadership Council is taking orders for chocolate hearts to be delivered on Valentine’s Day. The cost of each heart is 0.25 cents.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are starting to learn the number five. Last week Mrs. Eileen Ryan visited their class and read stories to the children. They are also learning about Ground Hog Day through various types of stories, circle time, art and science activities.

The Kindergarten class is experiencing their senses in health class. They are discovering their family tree.

The Grade 1 class is doing activities for Ground Hog Day. They are also researching animals and learning about their feelings.

The Grade 2 class is adding and subtracting in math. They are making a book about technology and reading 100 books for scholastic to make the earth greener.

The Grade 3 and 4 class made signs to cheer on the girls basketball team on Wednesday. They are also excited about the new seating plan in science class.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is studying the solar system and enjoying the D.A.R.E. program.

The Junior High class is still recovering from their trip to St. John’s for the Lego Robotics Challenge. They visited the Johnson GeoCentre, Signal Hill, The Rooms, Saint Bonaventure’s College and went glow bowling while on their trip.

Coming-Up
A representative from the Red Cross will be visiting the Grade 5 and 6 class to talk about the threat of Malaria in other countries on Monday.

Next week we will be celebrating the 100th day of school!

The Student Leadership Council is selling chocolate hearts for Valentines Day from Feb 5 to 10. Chocolates will be delivered on February 12.

Report cards are going home on February 10 and parent teacher interviews are on February 11 from 7-8:30.
