$793 Raised For The People Of Haiti

Our Haiti fundraiser was over the roof we raised $793.00 for the people of Haiti suffering after the earthquakes.

The junior high students are finished their midterm exams for another year.

This past weekend students Caylie Blake, Abigail Companion, Brooklynn Companion, Olivia Park and Jasmine Penney participated in the Western Regional Figure Skating Championship held in Corner Brook. Several of our students also won awards. Caylie Blake won gold in the Pre-Preliminary Category for 7 years and under, Olivia Park won silver in the Pre-Preliminary Category for 8 years and under, and Jasmine Penney won silver in the Pre-Juvenile ladies category. Jasmine Penney was also the recipient of the Andy Joy Cup for the most artistic performance of the competition. Jasmine also sang “O’ Canada” at the opening ceremonies.

This past week an Under 12 Girls Basketball Team started. The team is busy practicing and hoping to play other teams in Corner Brook.

On Monday, Tara Manuel came to our school and presented a puppet show called “Shadowy Souls” to the Junior Kindergarten class to the grade 6 class. Everyone enjoyed the show. It was full of laughs.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are still working on the letter “F”, the number “4” and are making valentines.

The Kindergarten class has classroom jobs and is welcoming a new student, Sierra Breen.

The Grade 1 class is learning in science how things change and are learning to count in multiples of 5 and 10.

The Grade 2 class has a new research project and are starting “star of the week” this week.

The Grade 3 and 4 class is excited to welcome a new student named Stephen Barnes to their class. They celebrated their teacher’s birthday yesterday. The grade 4 class took part in a hygiene presentation from the public health nurses.

The Grade 5 and 6 class welcomes two new grade 6 students Daniel Breen and Christopher Barnes. They began the D.A. R. E. program with Constable Kelly last Monday. They also had presentations from the public health nurses.

The Junior High class is in St. John’s today. They are finally on their Lego Robotics trip. Today they are visiting the Johnson Geocentre and the Rooms and the competition begins tomorrow in Mount Pearl. Good Luck!

Coming-Up
The Student Leadership Council is hosting a cookie sale on Feb. 3. Cookies are $0.25 and all proceeds will go to the library fundraiser.

The Student Leadership Council is selling chocolate hearts for Valentines Day from Feb 5 to 10. Chocolates will be delivered on February 12.

Report cards are going home on February 10 and parent teacher interviews are on February 11 from 7-8:30.

It's Been A Very Busy Week!

The talent show was a success. The junior high class raised $314 towards their trip to Mount Pearl. The students would like to thank all the guest performers, students and staff. The show featured the talents of Miss Yvette Coleman, Miss Haley Kawja, Mr. Edmund Walsh, Miss Marlee Vermooten, Mrs. Alison McHugh, Mr. Brian McHugh, and Mr. Gary Graham. We all had lots of fun.

We had a recycling blitz last week and we raised over $350. It is going towards our automated library. Thank you to the Student Leadership Council, Mrs. King, Mr. King, Mr. Sparkes, Mrs. McCarthy and the other students who volunteered to make the blitz a success.

On Monday fourth year nursing students Janet Sweetapple and Trudy Kearney came and gave a presentation on smoking for grade 4–6 students. This week is non-smoking week.

On Tuesday, January 19th Ms. Stephanie O’Brien, West Coast Coordinator for the Kids Eat Smart Program visited our school breakfast program.

The new chess club had their first meeting this week with many students from grade 2–9 taking part.

Basketball intramurals began this week for grade 3–6. As well, a girls basketball team started on Wednesday for grades 4–6.

On Wednesday we had a crazy hair theme day. Students and staff donated money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

On Thursday Brian Hancock from Newfoundland Power gave students in grade 5 and 6 a presentation on electrical safety called “Hazard Hamlet”.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are busy playing with the shovels and buckets that have been donated to their class by several students' parents. They are practicing the letter “f” and the number “4”.

The Kindergarten class is learning about the five senses in health class and about baptism in religion.

The Grade 1 class is talking about the environment and learning about contractions in language.

The Grade 2 class is writing and talking about fun things they like to do in winter. They are also learning about plurals.

The Grade 3 and 4 class is excited about beginning a new unit in math. They are also busy writing about why the triangle is terrific.

The Grade 5 and 6 class enjoyed their art show on Tuesday. They had a lot of fun preparing a play called “Is There Life on Other Planets?” for the talent show.

The Junior High class is studying for exams. Last week Mr. Brian McHugh visited their class to talk about the history of Corner Brook.

Coming-Up
There will be a parent meeting on Sunday, January 24th at 7:00 pm in the school cafeteria regarding the grade 4–9 trip to St. Pierre.

Talent Show Acts Warming Up!

Lots of students are practicing their talents for our Talent Show on Sunday. There are 10 acts already signed up. The junior high class is hosting the Talent Show.

New years resolutions are popping up all over the school. Classes have been posting their resolutions up outside their class.

Students are busy making “Valentines for Vets”. These valentine cards will be sent to war veterans. Students are also working on poster and stamp design contests. Good luck everyone and have fun!

Two of our teachers attended math workshops this week. On Tuesday Ms. Park attended a math workshop for grade 2. On Wednesday Mr. Hancock attended a workshop for grade 5 math.

Students are organizing a chess club. There is a sign-up sheet posted next to the chapel. Any student who is interested in chess club can sign up.

We would like to say thanks to Mr. Kennedy this week who is hard at work on our new school offices downstairs.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are working on opposites and learning about the number 3.

The Kindergarten class is continuing to learn adding in math and learning the sounds of the letters they learned.

The Grade 1 class is learning about area in math.

The Grade 2 class is getting ready for Valentines Day.

The Grade 3 and 4 class is planting a special bean with a message on it.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is getting ready for the Talent Show, creating planets with paper mache and preparing for an art showing on Tuesday.

The Junior High class is organizing the Talent Show for Sunday night. They are also doing practice challenges with their robot, Zipit. They are happy to report their all time high score of 215 points with no penalties. They begin midterm exams today.

Coming-Up
The Student Leadership Council recyclable blitz is ending tomorrow. Recyclables and bottles can be dropped off on Saturday from 11-2 pm. Money from the recycling blitz will be donated to our school library.

The school Talent Show is Sunday, January 17th at 7:00 pm. All family and friends are invited to come and see our talented students. Admission to the show is $3 and all proceeds are in aid of the trip to the Lego Robotics Skills Challenge.

Happy New Year!

Special guest, Pedro Taffe, who came all the way from Mexico, sang with our students during our variety show.

We’re all back here at IHMS ready to get back to our normal schedule.

We hope that everybody had a relaxing, yet exciting break. We wish everyone a happy new year. Students should try and think of a new year’s resolution to make 2010 the best school year ever. Some of our resolutions are: get more organized, complete all homework, get good grades and be on time for school.

Our school breakfast on the last day of classes was very delicious. We enjoyed pancakes and French toast. After that delicious breakfast we had class parties and enjoyed great snacks. After all that excitement we had a variety show. Thank you to all the students and staff for participating and showing their talent. We had juggling, hula-hooping, singing, dancing and cheerleading. Also, a special guest visited us all the way from Mexico, Pedro Taffe, came and sang with our students.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are building toys. They welcome to their class Kelsey Maxwell.

The Kindergarten class is adding in math and learning how to make things in science. They had fun making snowflakes and eating marshmallow men.

The Grade 1 class welcomes teacher intern Ms. Simone Bennett to their class. They are working on new years resolutions and are doing measurements in math.

The Grade 2 class is excited to be back in school after the Christmas break.

The Grade 3 and 4 class is hard at work right away with a spelling test today. They all enjoyed their Christmas break.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is doing paper mache planets in Art class. All the planets put together will make up the solar system.

The Junior High class had an awesome time on Christmas break. They are preparing for midterm exams and their trip to St. John’s.

Coming-Up
The Student Leadership Council is having another recycling blitz beginning Monday, January 11th and ending on Saturday, Jan. 16th. Recyclables and bottles can be dropped off during the week or on Saturday from 11-2 pm. We are challenging every student to bring in at least one bag of recyclables each. Money from the recycling blitz will be donated to our school library.

The Junior High class is organizing a school talent show for Sunday, January 17th at 7:00 pm. All family and friends are invited to come and see our talented students. Admission to the show is $3 and all proceeds are in aid of the trip to the Lego Robotics Skills Challenge. Students don’t forget to sign up! If you can sing, dance or play an instrument we need you!

The Junior High midterm exams begin Friday, January 22nd.

The Student Leadership Council is also planning something special for Valentine’s Day.

Don’t forget to visit our breakfast program every morning at 7:45 am.
