Grade 5/6 News Article - April 26th 2017

The students travelling to St. Pierre would like to thank everyone who purchased tickets in support of their chocolate raffle before the Easter break. Luke Coleman was the first place winner of the Laura Secord Box of chocolates valued at $100, Madeline Murphy was the second place winner of a 850 g Dairy Milk Bar, and Simon Boitsefski won the third prize of a 850 g Dairy Milk Bar. 

We would like to thank our entire school community for their support of the Apple A Day Fundraiser. This fundraiser raised $25,600 for technology in our school. 

This week is National Volunteer Week. We would like to thank everyone who volunteers to help our school. In June, we will host our annual volunteer appreciation breakfast. 

On Monday our school hosted a special assembly for Earth Day. Students and staff dressed in Earth Day colours to raise money for the greenhouse. Students presented poems, songs, and skits about protecting our Earth. Mrs. Kane’s grade two classes kicked off a school wide ban on plastic bags and is organizing a “Grab Bag” collection to take plastic bags out of our landfills. 

The Recycle My Cell Campaign officially ends this week. We would like to thank everyone for their work in collecting these cell phones and keeping them out of landfills. 

The kindergarten to grade six students have been chosen as provincial winners in the Kids in Charge (K-I-C) Contest hosted by Newfoundland Light and Power. The school will receive $2,000 for a technology grant. In addition, there will be a special awards presentation on Tuesday and a pizza party for all students in kindergarten to grade 6. 

The Grade 6 Girls’ Soccer team will play an invitational tournament this weekend at Sacred Heart School. The girls play at 5:30 pm on Friday and at 9:00 am on Saturday. 

There was a parent information session for junior kindergarten and kindergarten students for September 2017 on Tuesday evening in our school cafeteria.

Stars of the Week


Congratulations to Carter Bromley whose Atom A Hockey Team won a silver medal at the Provincial Championship in Gander over Easter. 

Congratulations to Noah Colbourne whose Atom B Hockey Team won a silver medal in Clarenville during Easter break. 

Congratulations to Noah Evans and Samuel Antoncich’s Hockey Team who lost a well played game for a medal. 

Congratulations to Simon Boitsefski and Luke Coleman who were in Ontario this past week along with Ms. Matthews with the Provincial Boys’ Choir. 

Congratulations to Nikola Verbiski who won the Saige Raide Memorial Contest. Students between the ages of 8 and 12 had to design a piece of jewelry. Nikola’s winning entry will now be made by Blue Marlin Jewelry for Mother’s Day.

Class News


The junior kindergarten classes are planting beans in homemade mini-greenhouses. This is a class science experiment. The students enjoyed their Easter break, but are glad to be back in school with their friends.  They would like to thank their ECE students Julie Curtis and Katie Nichol who finished their placements this week.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class learned about ways children can help protect our planet. They are finishing subtraction in math and starting to learn about data and graphing. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class planted in the greenhouse this week. The students are very excited to watch their seeds grow. The children are reflecting on what can help and what may hurt a tiny seed.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a wonderful Easter break, but they are happy to be back with their friends. They really enjoyed their Dental Health session with Nurse Knee this week. We are finishing up our geometry unit in math. They would like to wish Thomas a very happy birthday!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class had a lot of fun this week learning about Earth Day. They made Earth Day mobiles and wrote about what they could do to protect the Earth.

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is excited to kick off the Grab Bag Challenge and recycle as many plastic bags as they can for a chance to win $500 for the school. This is a big deal for their class since the class visited City Hall last month regarding banning plastic bags in Corner Brook and now the school.

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class is learning about Earth Day this week. They started making surveys in math for a unit on graphing. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is wrapping up the first part of their grammar unit. They will be preparing for a test soon. In math they are moving  into a measurement unit and finishing their in-class assignment on data and research. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class was excited to be attending Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador’s production of Jack Five-Oh and Andy Jones this Thursday at the Arts and Culture Centre. They are continuing their math unit on Geometry and are examining the differences between pyramids and prisms. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class is beginning geometry in math. They are also learning more about verbs in language arts. The students are glad to see their friends again after the Easter break. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class wrote a skit to perform at our school assembly for Earth Day on Monday. They learned lots of interesting facts about Earth Day and recycling in Newfoundland and Labrador. The grade five students are working on a novel study on “Number the Stars”. The grade six students are writing essays about what they would do if they could be mayor of Corner Brook for one day.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class is preparing for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge and the Underwater Robotics Event. The grade nine to Level 3 students visited the Greenwood Inn pool on Wednesday afternoon to test their robot and practice missions in the pool.

Grade 5/6 News Article - April 5th 2017

Congratulations to our school choir and chamber choir who performed last week at the Rotary Music Festival.  Our Chamber Choir was also chosen to sing in “The Stars of the Festival” on Tuesday night. We would like to thank Caelin Randell-Scott who accompanied the Chamber Choir on the French horn. Our school band received a $50 scholarship and our Chamber Choir received a $150 scholarship and has been invited to participate in the Provincial Festival. 

Auditions for our school musical “The Trials of Alice in Wonderland” took place last week. The official cast has been chosen and the rehearsals will be starting soon. 

The grade five to Level 3 students took part in the Shriner’s Cardboard Box race at Marble Mountain on Saturday. Thomas Randell and his mom also participated, along with Mark Janes and his dad, Candace and Carly Johannesen, as well as Max Pittman and his cousin. A great time was had by all. Anna MacKenzie and Madison Noel placed first in the junior high category and Rebekah Calbert and Arista White placed first in the senior high category.

The grade seven to Level 3 students will perform this evening in Deer Lake at Xavier Junior High. Their production “Complaint Department and Lemonade” will be on at 6:00 pm as part of the Regional Drama Festival. 

The Chess Club held a party on Tuesday during their weekly meeting to celebrate the group’s success at the Provincial Chess Tournament this year. 

The grade five girls’ basketball team will participate in a tournament hosted by Humber Elementary this weekend. We wish the girls the best of luck!

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the true meaning of Easter and doing Easter crafts. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about safety at home in health and learning about beavers in science. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is celebrating the International Children’s Book Day with a “book show and tell”. Everyone is sharing their favourite stories with their classmates. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about the real meaning of Easter in religion class. They are learning about the different attributes of objects in math class. They are also making life-size penguins today and finishing up their research on their favourite kinds. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been working on a book about spring. They had to use their spring vocabulary to complete it. They have also begun talking about Easter and why they celebrate Easter. They are really excited about Easter and are glad to have lots of Easter themed activities to complete. 

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is starting to learn about their teeth and how important they are to our health. They are learning how to take care of our teeth, the job of the dentist, and why they lose their baby teeth. They are excited about this because a lot of students have been losing their teeth. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class is reviewing math facts and using water theme pages. They have be revisiting their understanding of French articles and adjectives using their Easter vocabulary and reading and writing Easter stories. They are learning about air in science and making pinwheels. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is excited to be taking part in the musical this year. The grade three and four students are learning to identify and conjugate irregular verbs in the present tense and are nearly finished their data management unit. The grade five and six students are learning to identify and conjugate verbs in the present tense, and are preparing to finish their data management unit in math with a final project.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has started their new unit on geometry. They are learning about the different polygons and their numbers of sides. They have also started portrait drawings in art class. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class is continuing with their novel study of The BFG. They are preparing for the class speak off and the heritage Fair. They have started a unit on sound in science class and decimals in math. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class was excited to see the junior and senior high dress rehearsal of “Complaint Department and Lemonade” on Wednesday afternoon. The students really enjoyed planning, building, and racing their cardboard boxes last week. Students are presenting their speeches today for the upcoming elementary speak off. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class are performing their production at Xavier Junior High this evening. The students have worked very hard to prepare for their show.

Grade 5/6 News Article - April 13th 2017

Our grade seven to Level 1 students participated in the Western Regional Drama Festival last weekend at Xavier Junior High. Their production, “Complaint Department and Lemonade” was a lot of fun! Congratulations to the students and to their Director, Mrs. McCarthy.
Last week we began the draws for the Apple A Day Prizes. Mr. Colin Clarke won the day 1 prize of an Apple TV and Jaxon Clarke won the seller’s prize; Aaron Payne won the day two prize of an Apple iPod touch and the seller’s prize; Mr. Greg Price won the day three prize of an Apple watch and Cohen Hartley won the seller’s prize; Mrs. Marie Kennedy won the day four prize of an iPad Pro and Mrs. Marjorie Deckert won the seller’s prize; Mr. Matthew Roberts won the day five prize of an iPad and Apple Watch and Grayson Roberts won the seller’s prize. 
Our school hosted our annual Elementary School Speak Off on Monday evening for students in grades 4-6. Grade four participants included: Gabriel Rowsell, Katherine Noel, and Brooke Watton. Grade five participants included: Keira Clarke and Reyd Ward. Grade six included: Simon Boitsefski, Clare Coleman, and Max Pittman. We would like to thank our judges for the event Mrs. Sandee Harnum, Mrs. Vicky Bosch, and Mrs. Paula Gruditch. The overall winner was Brooke Watton who spoke on Societies Expectations of Being a Girl.

The students travelling to St. Pierre sold tickets this week for a Chocolate Raffle. There are three prizes: A Laura Secord Gift Box valued at $100, and two 850g Cadbury chocolate bars. The draw  took place on Thursday. 
On Tuesday afternoon Mrs. Coleman and the Prayer Group performed the Easter Passion at All Hallows Parish. This recounted the crucifixion of Jesus.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about Jesus and the true meaning of Easter. They are making Easter crafts. The class welcomes Ms. Brittany Burden to their program. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning an Earth poem in science. They are discussing Easter in religion and really enjoyed the student council Easter egg hunt. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class enjoyed their book show and tell last week. They have a lot of fun sharing their favourite stories. The class learned about clocks and time this week. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class wrote Easter stories ad doing some neat crafts. They are excited to be having an Easter Egg Hunt today in their classroom. They would like to wish our readers a happy and Holy Easter. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class finished up their math unit by working in groups to represent large numbers. They worked on many fun Easter activities and learned lot of new vocabulary. In honor of Earth Day on the 22nd they also began discussing how to respect the planet and take care of the environment. 

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is working on math and language arts centres this week. The students are learning about Easter and looking forward to the Easter break!

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class made mini-booklets about Easter eggs using the prepositions: sur, devant, sous, dans, à côte, derrière, and entre. They are looking forward to the Easter egg hunt today. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is finishing off their units before the Easter break. The grade three and four students are doing Easter reading comprehensions, focusing on recognizing and identifying subject verb agreements while reading. The grade five and six students are finishing their data management unit. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has been working on Easter colouring contests and World Ocean’s Day posters. They have been brainstorming and diligently working on their process writing pieces. For this process they have to come up with a non-conventional way to teach Pippi Longstocking the alphabet.

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class learned more about decimals by making change in a math game called “Shopkeeper”. They starting working on their Heritage Fair projects in social studies and are continuing to learn about sand in science.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class planned and presented a class debate in language arts this week. The students debated on homework, video games, and cats versus dogs.  The students also worked on their Heritage fair projects in social studies. The grade five’s are working on fractions in math class, and the grade six students are studying geometry. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class has been hard at work on their Heritage Fair assignments. The students visited the Corner Brook Public Library on Wednesday morning to research their topics.  The students have been working on the KIC Start Energy Conservation videos.

Grade 5/6 News Article - March 29th 2017

Our students were very busy this week performing in the Rotary Music Festival. Our School Choir and Chamber Choir performed on Monday morning. The Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten choirs performed on Tuesday. The grade one and two students participated in a workshop on Thursday morning. Our school bands will perform this morning at Westside Tabernacle. We would like to thank Ms. Matthews, Mrs. Linda Carr, Mr. Kevin Hennessy, and Ms. Kane for accompanying the choirs and bands. 
Auditions began this week for “The Trials of Alice”. The school musical will be held in June. 
The grade five to Level 3 students worked on creating cardboard box racing cars this week for the Shriners Marble Mountain Cardboard Box Race this Saturday afternoon.
The kindergarten and Level 3 graduation photos were taken by the school photographer on Wednesday. 
Apple-A-Day Tickets are on sale! Tickets are $20 each. The tickets include six days of prizes including: an apple TV; 16 GB iPod Touch and $25 iTunes Gift Card; Apple Watch 38 mm; 9.7 inch iPad Pro; Apple Watch and iPad Mini 2; and 13 inch MacBook Air. The draws will begin on April 6.
There will be a meeting about planning for our school Greenhouse for parents and teachers in the school cafeteria on Sunday evening at 7:00 pm.

Class News


The junior kindergarten classes are learning about music and how different instruments work. The students were very proud to perform at the Rotary Music Festival for the first time! The classes would like to welcome Early Childhood Education students Ms. Julie Curtis, and Katie Nichol. 
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class made “hair heads” in language arts and science this week. The class enjoyed performing in the Rotary Music Festival on Tuesday morning.

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is exploring the oceans, discovering more about planet Earth, and reflecting upon the ways we can protect our environment. 
Mrs. George’s grade one English class has started their geometry unit in math this week. They are really enjoying learning about the 17 different kinds of penguins. 
Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class was very excited and proud to participate in the music festival. They have been working with manipulatives to represent numbers up to 100. They really enjoyed using Smartboard and challenging each other to represent numbers in 10 frames.  
Ms. Kane’s grade two English class started a new unit on Fairy Tales on Friday. They have been enjoying learning about what makes a Fairy Tale, reading Fairy Tales and writing their very own!
Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class has been reviewing and practicing their math facts: representing numbers in different ways, parts and wholes, expanded form, comparing numbers and missing addends. 
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is starting a grammar unit in French. They are conjunctions verbs in the present tense. The grade five and sixes are finishing their bloom balls. 
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class learned about things we use to measure in the kitchen. They made some artistic pieces on quarts, pints, cups, and tablespoons. The pieces look awesome!

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class is learning about fractions and decimals. They are also learning about light optics in science and David Lingstone, the explorer, in social studies. They have created their own comic strips in art class and are continuing to learn about bones in health. 
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is excited about the Shriner’s Cardboard Box Race on Saturday. The students are writing speeches for the elementary speak off on April 10. They are learning about pop culture art in social studies class. 
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class was busy this week planning, constructing and decorating their sleds for the Shriner’s Marble Mountain Cardboard Box Race tomorrow! They have some interesting design features. The group is one week away from their production of “Complaint Department and Lemonade” for the Western Regional Drama Festival.
