We hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend and Corner Brook Winter Carnival Day on Monday.
The students were very excited to go skating at the Pepsi Centre on Tuesday thanks to the Knights of Columbus. They also provided a yummy snack. It was a great day!
On Wednesday, everyone was wearing pink t-shirts for anti-bullying week and pink t-shirt day. A lot of students and teachers were wearing the pink t-shirt from Corner Brook’s Crime Prevention Committee. The shirt features the slogans of McKenna Batstone, Bridgett Sparkes, and Paige Walsh.  We would like to send a special thank you to Mrs. George who made a special pink t-shirt display in our entrance.
On Wednesday night and Thursday we had our Scholastic Book Fair. Thank you to Mrs. George and all the teachers for making it a wonderful event. Wednesday was our family night and Thursday was our student visits. Thank you also to Mr. McCarthy for volunteering to help on family night.
This week our school hosted the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee on Thursday night. It featured students in grades 4, 5 and 6 from all the schools in Corner Brook. Madison Noel and Samuel Michael were interviewed by Bernice Hillier of CBC on Tuesday morning. Our school spellers are: Amna Ahmad, Jericho San Jose, William Bennett, Samuel Michael, William Bruce-Robertson, and Madison Noel. They did t-e-r-r-i-f-i-c ! Thank you to Ms. Park and Mrs. McCarthy for organizing the event and to our judges: Suzanne Carey and Linda Chaisson.

Congratulations to our SUPER spellers: Amna, Jericho, William B, Samuel, William B-R and Madison who participated in the Corner Brook Winter Carnival Spelling Bee! You made us SO proud! A special shout-out to Amna who won the title of Grade 4 Corner Brook Champion!!
Also on Thursday we had our Winter Carnival fun day with outdoor carnival activities. Thank you to Mr. Ryley Nadon, Mr. Drew Nadon and the Junior High students for organizing the day! See picture below.

Stars of The Week
We would like to congratulate William Bruce-Robertson and Sadie MacDonnell who performed in Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador’s production of Muppet Mania on Saturday.
Congratulations to Anna Brake who participated in the Atlantic Skating Championships last weekend.
Congratulations to Colin and Gina Spencer who participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival in St. John’s over the weekend. Colin placed first in the nine and under musical theory category and Gina placed first in both the 11 and under musical theatre category and the 11 and under test piece category.

 
Class News

The junior kindergarten classes would like to thank the North Shore Early Childhood Association for the outdoor play equipment they donated. They welcome Megan Keeping a second year CONA student to Mrs. Vincent and Mrs. English’s class and Tara Tiller a second year CONA student to Mrs. Dicks and Ms. Crocker’s class.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a very fun and busy week. They skated on Tuesday and celebrated Sarah’s birthday. They all wore pink shirts on Wednesday for Anti-bullying day and on Thursday they had a blast doing Winter Carnival fun activities outside.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class enjoyed skating on Tuesday. They participated in Anti-bullying day on Wednesday and had a lot of fun doing carnival activities on Thursday.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class was super excited for skating. In class this week they are making a book about their feelings.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class was busy this week learning how to count by 2s,5s and 10s and learning about different strategies. They had a lot of fun with all the activities this week especially the skating and carnival fun activities.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has started their unit on penguins. In math they are counting in groups of 2, 5 and 10. They are very excited to be transplanting their seedlings today with Karen, their crop specialist friend!

Ms. Park’s grade two class had a great time this week! They loved the skating and the winter carnival fun day activities.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class is learning all about different carnivals this week including the Corner Brook Winter Carnival, Le Carnaval de Quebec, and Le Carnavel de Rio. They are looking at the similarities and differences of these three carnivals.  They really enjoyed the outdoor activities on Thursday.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class enjoyed the skating thanks to the Knights of Columbus. They have begun their novel study on Charlotte’s Web in language arts. They would like to thank Mrs. George for another wonderful Scholastic Book Fair. They wore pink shirts on Wednesday to show that they stand up to bullies.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a great time skating on Tuesday. They also had a movie and pizza party on Tuesday with their prize from the Winter Carnival slogan contest. They all wore their pink t-shirts on Wednesday. They were really excited to have t-shirts with their classmates’ slogans on them! 
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is finishing their Olympic unit on data analysis. They had a great time building the school snow sculpture and organizing the outdoor activities on Thursday.

Coming Up

We are having a school wide pancake breakfast on Tuesday morning starting at 7:30 am.

Ash Wednesday is March 5th. We will attend Mass on Wednesday at 8:30 instead of Friday.

We hope that everyone enjoyed the extra-long weekend because of the snow storms.  The provincial basketball tournaments were cancelled last week because of the weather.
This week we welcome Ms. Jessi Martin who is a new staff member in our Junior Kindergarten program.  Also, we welcome an early childhood education student from the College of the North Atlantic, Tara Tiller, who is doing a work placement with our school.
Our school was a winner in the MMSB Recycle My Cell Campaign! Way to go IHMS. Thank you to all the students and families who brought in used cell phones.
On Tuesday we celebrated Valentine’s Day by wearing red, white and pink. Many classes had parties and exchanged Valentines.
We celebrated the 100th of school on Wednesday! The primary students dressed up for the 100th day theme and the elementary and junior high students dressed to support our Olympic athletes. All the students and staff watched Katelyn Osmond’s short program through our media centre and Smartboards. All of our classes have been doing Olympic theme activities in gym!
Our skating day has been moved to next Tuesday.
Our Scholastic book fair family night will be next Wednesday night from 6 to 8 pm.

Stars of The Week
We would like to congratulate Katelyn Osmond on her performance on Wednesday during her short program at the Sochi Winter Olympics!

Congratulations to Keely Brothers who placed 9th overall in the provincial Frosty Flip gymnastics competition in St. John’s last weekend. Awesome!

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes made fruit loop 100th day necklaces and headbands. For the rest of the week they have been focusing on Olympic activities.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is 100 days smarter. They celebrated the 100th day with games, cupcakes, and made self-portraits of what they will look like in 100 years with cotton balls for hair.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class took part in 100th day activities and celebrated Valentine’s Day this week. They are excited to watch their plants continue to grow.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class celebrated Valentine’s Day on Tuesday and the 100th day on Wednesday. They are learning all about the number 100 and taking part in lots of activities. They are wishing Jesse Racicot a very happy 6th birthday!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class was very excited about the 100th day of school. They had their 100th day masks ready. They also shared the 100th day collections they worked on as part of a math activity. They are beginning their fifth math unit which just happened to be about the number 100!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had lots of fun on the 100th day of school! They have shared their 100 collections, wrote about what they’d like to do before they turn 100, and made self-portraits of themselves at 100 years old. They also shined pennies using ketchup in science class. They are really excited to visit the city library today.

Ms. Park’s grade two class were very excited to wear their 100th day t-shirts on Wednesday. They are very excited about their visit to the public library today! The star of the week is Jorja.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class have been following our Olympic athletes since the beginning of the Olympics. During the games they have been making paper medals for each athlete who has won a medal. They also shared their medal information with other classes in presentations. During the winter games what colours are used the most in class? Gold, silver and bronze of course!

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class celebrated Valentine’s Day on Tuesday with sundae’s and had personalized cakes. On Wednesday they had an Olympic theme day and dressed in patriotic colours. In math the grade 3 students have begun 3D geometry and are creating 3D figures from nets. It is quite challenging!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a lot of fun doing Olympic theme activities in gym class. The grade 5 class did a chocolate taste test on Wednesday to determine their favourite kind of chocolate bar as part of their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory novel study. It was a delicious class! The grade 6 students are learning some study and research strategies in language arts.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is working on an analysis unit in math. They helped to build an Olympic snow sculpture outside last week with the grade 5 and 6 class. They are busy planning their play for the regional drama festival and building their popsicle stick bridges.

Today is pink and red theme day at our school for Valentine’s Day. We would like to wish everyone a happy Valentine’s Day.
Mrs. Foley and the Student Council were selling candy-grams this week for $0.50. They will be delivered today.  Also this week was teacher appreciation week. The teachers felt very appreciated with all the treats our families brought in to them.
We have been following the Olympics very closely this week. Thank you to Ms. Scott who has been keeping up to date with her bulletin board display and Mr. Hancock who set up the media centre so we could watch the opening ceremonies. We will be watching Katelyn Osmond skate nest week from our Media Centre.
This week our grade 3-5 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will play in the Western provincial Basketball tournament.  They are also playing this weekend. We wish them luck! Our school is hosting the grade 5 girls’ Western Provincial basketball Tournament.
Many of our classes made Valentine cards for Veterans as part of the Valentines for Vets Campaign.

Stars of The Week

We would like to congratulate Caleb and Ella Rashleigh who won medals in hockey recently.

Congratulations to Ava Hodder who earned ribbons and a badge in her CanSkate program.

Congratulations to our grade 3 to 5 boys’ basketball team who played a very close game against Sacred Heart last week! Also to our grade 6 girls’ basketball team who played in the annual RNC basketball tournament last week!
Congratulations to Isaac Buckingham who participated in a training camp and the Marble Cup last weekend.

Class News
 
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the true meaning of love and friendship. They are also doing Valentine activities and having a party today.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had lots of Valentine’s Day fun this week. They made love bugs, coupon books and valentine’s holders out of recycled cereal boxes. Everyone is dressed in rouge, rose and blanc today.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working on Valentine’s Day and Olympic Activities. They are working on the letter “g” and can’t wait for the 100th day of school on Monday!

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is starting addition in math. They are doing so well with the MindUp curriculum and learning all the parts of the brain. They are following the Olympics closely.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is enjoying Valentine’s Day themed activities. They are finishing up their unit on measurement. They are looking forward to beginning our new unit on numbers to 100. The 100th day of school is going to be a very exciting way to begin their new unit!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is making a friendship quilt in health class. In Mathletics they are practicing addition and subtraction online. They are super excited for their Valentine’s party today. Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Ms. Park’s grade two class is writing special messages to their friends in class for valentine’s Day. They are making 100th day t-shirts. The student of the week for this week is Brooklyn.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class is writing valentine cards for veterans this week. Each week , the grade 2 students read French books to Mlle Brake’s students. They enjoy reading to them very much. This week, they wrote cards for their buddy readers.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class are enjoying watching their seeds sprout and grow in their classroom garden.  The grade 3 students have begun a geometry unit in math. They are learning about regular and irregular polygons.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class made self-portraits for Dame’s Portrait Gallery mail art show at the Grenfell Art Gallery. Students and their parents had the opportunity to go and view their work at the reception held on Wednesday evening. They would like to thank Mrs. Jane Bruce-Robertson for working on this project with them. They were also busy this week outside working on a snow sculpture.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class have started their model bridges for the National Geoscience and Engineering Month popsicle bridge competition in March. Mr. Warren Neville owner of Mechanical Advantage Engineering Ltd. visited the students on Wednesday to discuss the competition and elements of bridge design.

Coming Up

The 100th day of school is this Monday, February 17th!

On Tuesday our school will go skating from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. The skating is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. It will also be a casual day. Also on Tuesday our classes will have a sneak peak of the book fair. The family night event will take place from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm.
Our school will be closed on Monday, February 24th for Winter Carnival Family Day.

The Olympics begin today. We are very excited!! Many classes are doing Olympic themes and learning about Canada’s athletes.

The grade 6 girls’ basketball team was excited to participate in the annual RNC tournament this week. Thank you to Mrs. Bishop and Mr. Ryley Nadon for coaching the team.

Last week the Junior High girls’ basketball team participated in an invitational tournament at G.C. Rowe.

On Monday we celebrated Saint Valentine with a special prayer service and skit with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group.

This week we welcome Mr. Drew Nadon to our school. He is the new Junior High homeroom teacher and math teacher.

The Junior High report cards went home on Wednesday. We hope all the Junior High students did well!

Our art classes would like to thank Starbucks for their donation of popsicle sticks for classroom art projects!

If anyone still has their Winter Carnival button money it is now due at the office.

Stars of The Week

We would like to congratulate our Junior High girls’ basketball team who has a great time at the G.C. Rowe Invitational tournament last weekend. Hajra Ahmad, Makenzy Bishop, Alejandra Hernandez, and Maria Reynolds all received players of the game awards. Maria Reynolds was chosen for the all star team!

Congratulations to Jenna Cammie, Abigail Woodford, Claire Brake, and McKenna Batstone who participated in the Silver Blades Can Skate Team who won bronze medals at the Provincial Championship last weekend in St. John’s. McKenna is the co-captain of the team. Congratulations also to Anna Brake, a member of the Juvenile Precision Silver Blades Figure Skating team, who also won bronze this past weekend. Way to go!

Congratulations to Benjamin Bellows-Davis, Matthew Buckle, Carter Bromley, Natalie Caines, Yazan Ismail, Mark Janes, Luke Murphy, Jessie Racicot, and Saleem Obeid who won medals at a hockey tournament in Stephenville last weekend.

Congratulations to McKenna Batstone, Bridgett Sparkes, and Paige Walsh who were chosen as the school winners for the Pink T-Shirt Contest for anti-bullying week. They will represent our school for the Corner Brook Crime Prevention Slogan Contest. Thank you to Mrs. George for overseeing the project.
 
Class News
 
The junior kindergarten classes in conjunction with Groundhog Day took homework home for the very first time. On Friday they did a poll to see who expected the weather to be sunny, allowing the groundhog to see his shadow or if they thought it would be cloudy and therefore not allowing the groundhog to see his shadow. On Monday they compared their predictions. This week they are learning about the Olympics and making Olympic flags. They will participate in their own Olympic challenge.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is wishing Israela a very happy birthday. They are enjoying some Olympic activities today. They are also learning new Valentine’s Day words in French. Amour means love. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is very excited about their classroom garden. It is fun to watch the plants start to grow. They are busy preparing for Valentine’s Day.

Ms. Parsons’s Kindergarten English class is starting adding in math this week. They are learning about groups in social studies. They are also starting Valentine’s Day activities.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is looking forward to the Olympics and the Corner Brook Winter Carnival. They are wishing our Canadian athletes bonne chance!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about love. In math they are comparing surface areas. In religion they are learning how God calls us by name.

Ms. Park’s grade two class has started student of the week writing. This week the student of the week is Will. They are learning about floating and sinking in science. They are also testing different solids.

Mme. LaChance’s grade two and three French Immersion class are imagining what it would be like to be very very tiny. They read a book about being very tiny and had to make their own unique sentences. If she was tiny, Isabelle would travel in her mom’s pocket. If she was tiny, Natalie would find shadow under a broccoli. If he was tiny, Brandon would travel on a butterfly. If he was tiny, Caleb would play soccer with a cheerio for a ball. If he was tiny, Jakson would sleep in a jar. If he was tiny, Lucas would ride a chicken like a horse. If he was tiny, Simon would take a book for a camping tent. If he was tiny, jack would ski on an ice cube.

Mrs. Foley’s grade three and four class had their last day of cross country skiing this week. They really enjoyed the program!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class was busy this week working on a new mail art project with Mrs. Bruce-Robertson. They are very excited about making their self-portraits. The grade 5 class made profiles of themselves for winning Mr. Wonka’s golden ticket. The grade 6 students were busy making a school video as part of their Commonwealth Education Project with Mr. Ryley Nadon.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class went sliding on Wednesday as part of their enrichment class. They needed a good break after their week of exams. This week they are learning about technology and inventions. They are realizing that some inventions are created by accident.
 
Coming Up

The countdown to the 100th day of school is continuing.

There will be a meeting for the Quebec City/Space Camp trip for parents on Sunday evening at 7 pm in our school cafeteria.

We will be celebrating teacher appreciation week February 10 to 14.
Valentine’s Day is February 14th.

Our school will go skating on February 18 at 9:30 am.
