The following are pictures from our National Forestry Week activities at Margaret Bowater Park on Wednesday morning. Mrs. Angel McCarthy's grade 5 and 6 class attended information sessions and the tree planting ceremony for National Tree Day.

This week we held our student leadership council elections. Maria Reynolds was elected Prime Minister, Anna MacKenzie was elected Deputy Prime Minister, William Bennett was elected as secretary and Telicia Young was elected as primary representative. Congratulations to all students who took part in the election this year. Classes are busy choosing their classroom representatives. Thank you to Mr. Drew Nadon and Mrs. McCarthy for organizing the election.
This week our school celebrated National Forest Week. The grade 5 and 6 class participated in the official opening ceremonies and a variety of activities at Margaret Bowater Park.

On Wednesday, for National Tree day we held a “paperless” day at school. Also, students in our school made leaves to hang on a school tree in the main lobby and talked about the importance of our trees.

 On Thursday we had a theme day where students wore fall colours. As part of our schoolyard naturalization project we planted bulbs and crocuses around our school. Thank you to all of our families for donating these plants and to Mr. Dave Smith and his team for assisting with the planting.

This Wednesday our cross country runners participated in their second meet. The run was hosted by J.J. Curling School. Mr. Drew Nadon has started a grade seven to level 1 running team. The team meets every Wednesday after school.

Our teachers hosted a curriculum night in our school gym on Thursday evening from 7-8:30 pm.

This year our school lunch program is being run by Mrs. Barb Anderson. We would like to welcome back our breakfast volunteers Mrs. Barb Anderson and Mrs. Shirley Porter.  Our breakfast program is very busy and we are grateful to have you! We also would like to welcome back Mr. Charles Cameron who dedicates time to improving our school library. Thank you, Mr. Cameron.

This week we welcome Mr. Paul Butler to our afterschool program. Mr. Butler is hosting a chess club for students every Thursday from 4 to 5 pm.

 We would like to thank Murphy Brothers for donating the bus for our junior high to level 1 students to go on their field trip to Bonne Bay Pond last week.

The grade six to level 1 students are hosting a car wash at the Canadian Tire Gas Bar this Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. All money raised will help the team with the cost of equipment and travel to the Intermediate Skills Challenge held each year in Mount Pearl.

STARS OF THE WEEK
We would like to congratulate Jacob Bursey and his family on the birth of their new daughter this week!  Olivia Sheppard and her family also welcomed a new baby girl this week, congratulations!

Congratulations to members of our cross country runner club who participated in the meet at St. Gerard’s last week. Our runners included: Makenzy Bishop, Brandon Brake, Isaac Buckingham, Jacob Bursey, Cole Boyd-Martin, Jakson Ganz, Clare Coleman, Emma Doman, Aria Kazerouni, Isabelle Mercier, Lucas Neville, Natalie Parsons, Caleb Rashleigh, Myles Young, and Telicia Young.

IHMS WEEKLY CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are learning the letter “b” and “z”. They are making apple scented bubbles and tasting apples.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is doing tree art for National Tree Day. They are also learning about the golden rule.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had a lot of fun planting bulbs for National Forest Week. They are learning about patterns in math and living and non-living things in science.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about things they like to do in the fall. They have started their second unit in math. They are celebrating National Forest Week by learning about trees and planting seedlings (thank you Ms. Hamlyn!) and doing some fun leaf crafts. The star of the week is Ben-Bellows-Davis.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is leading in chapel this week. It is their first time leading the prayers in French. They were very excited. They have started to do some activities about fall and apples. They are learning a lot!

Ms. Park’s grade two class is having fun making sunflowers using tissue paper and sunflower seeds in art class. They are exploring the schoolyard to discover the signs of fall and making a fall or autumn book in language arts. They are doing science experiments to find out if there is any water in the air.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is learning to count by 2,5, and 10. They are also doing pattern naming attributes and extending on their patterns.

Ms. Rumbolt’s grade three and four class has been very busy this week. The students in running club had a great time at their second running meet. In science, the grade three students are welcoming a guest to their classroom next week to help them learn about composting. The grade four students are almost ready to display their “line art”.

Mme. LaChance’s grade three and four French Immersion class is learning about patterns in math. Students have been very creative in writing their own patterns. In science the grade threes are learning about different parts of plants and the grade fours are learning about the interaction between animals and nature. The grade three students are excited about writing postcards from school to a special friend in English class.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a great time on their field trip this week. They would like to thank Mrs. Dumaresque, Mr. Walsh and Ms. Chrappa for driving them to their field trip. It was a little cold, but they had a great time. They especially enjoyed the hot chocolate donated by Mrs. Dumaresque and Ms. Chrappa afterwards! They really enjoyed reading “Being a Genie: A Beginners Guide” this week and writing about “Wishes that Annoy Genies”. They agree that genie’s would be annoyed by someone wishing for more wishes!
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class has been busy preparing their script acting for theatre arts. The students are looking forward to their car wash fundraiser this weekend from 11-4 at the Canadian Tire Gas Bar to help raise money for their skills challenge trip.


COMING UP AT IHMS...
Vegetable orders are due Oct. 2.

School will be closed for students in kindergarten to level 1 on October 2nd for professional development. The junior kindergarten program will remain open.

We are having a theme day on October 3 for the Western Memorial Radiothon.

Our school breakfast program began this week. It runs every day from 7:30 am to 8:20 am. We are looking for volunteers for our breakfast and lunch programs. Please contact the office if you can help.

The kindergarten to grade six students rode a bus to the Arts and Culture centre on Monday to see the Heather and Eric performance. It was a great show. For many kindergarten students it was their first bus ride!

On Tuesday IHMS celebrated its 15th anniversary with each class singing, dancing and sharing special thoughts about our school. We enjoyed cake and milk together after the performances. Thank you to Mr. Drew Nadon’s class for helping organize the cake and milk.

Our cross country running team participated in their first meet this week at St.  Gerard’s. Thank you to Mlle. Brake, Ms. Rumbolt and Mme LaChance for accompanying the students.  All of our runners did very well!

Student Leadership Council elections are underway. The voting for Prime Minister/Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary, and Primary Representative will be on Monday. Classroom representatives will also be selected by homeroom classes on Monday.

Our media centre opened this week. Our reporters were Hajra Ahmad, Emily Murley, Rebecca Janes and Simon Boitsefski.

We would like to thank Murphy Brothers for donating the bus for our junior high to level 1 students to go on their field trip to Bonne Bay Pond last week.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Foley on the birth of their baby girl, Kaia, on Tuesday!

STARS OF THE WEEK
We would like to congratulate Nikola Verbiski who raised $2,580 over the summer for Conor and Ava Duggan from Pasadena.

Congratulations to Simon Boitsefski, Clare Coleman and Colin Spencer who participated in the Gros Morne Summer Music as members of the Memorial University Chamber Choir.

IHMS WEEKLY CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are using the letter “a” and the number “1”. They are continuing to learn about apples and are making applesauce this week.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is wishing IHMS a very happy 15th birthday. They really enjoyed the cake and milk, yum! They had a great time at the “Sing Along With Friends” performance at the Arts and Culture Centre. For many students it was their first time on a school bus!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was very excited to take a bus ride to the Arts and Culture Centre. They really enjoyed the Heather and Eric performance. They had a lot of fun celebrating IHMS 15th birthday with cake and milk.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is really enjoying creating patterns this week in math. They are learning about what happens to the sun each day in science. They would like to welcome Brady Green to their class this week. The star of the week is Ava Hodder!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is finishing up their unit on patterns this week. They are learning about the sun and temperature. They had an awesome time at the birthday celebration.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is making time capsules in social studies. In science they are learning about air.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class really enjoyed singing with Mme. Ryan’s class during our school celebration on Tuesday. Bonne Fete, IHMS!

Ms. Rumbolt’s grade three and four class created a song called “Everything is awesome!” for the IHMS birthday celebrations. In art class they made Lego self-portraits.

Mme. LaChance’s grade three and four French Immersion class began a new project this week. They are writing to penpals in St. Malo, Quebec. They have already written their letter to students in their grade 3 and 4 class. This project will help them practice their French writing. Later in the year they will use Skype to talk with their friends.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had their first spelling test this week. Everyone did great! The students wrote a song called “The First 15 Days of School” for the IHMS birthday celebration.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class had an awesome field trip last week to Mrs. King’s cabin at Bonne Bay Pond. Students had a great time tubing, knee boarding, and enjoying a barbecue supper together. Thank you to Mr. King, Mrs. King, Mr. Drew Nadon, and Mrs. McCarthy for supervising the students on their field trip.


COMING UP AT IHMS...
Next week is National Forest Week. We will be celebrating on Thursday afternoon. We are asking all families to bring a bulb or crocus to school to plant around the school.
Also on the September 25 we will host our annual curriculum night from 7:00-8:30 pm in the school gym.
Our school will be participating in the Terry Fox walk on Monday, September 29. We are asking students to wear casual clothes and donate $1 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

We would like to welcome everyone back for another school year! We would like to send a special welcome to our new school families and our new teachers. This year we welcome three new teachers: Mme. Gerene O’Dell, Ms. Jennifer Rumbolt, and Ms. Rachael Joffred.

On Friday our students attended the opening mass at All Hallows. Thank you to Bishop Hundt for celebrating this special mass with us and to Mr. Graham, Mrs. English and Mrs. McCarthy for preparing the students to take part.

Immaculate heart of Mary School celebrated International Literacy Day on Monday at 10:00 am for ten minutes of fun literacy activities in each classroom.

On Wednesday our junior high and level one students took part in the Trading books for Boats program with ACAP Humber Arm. It was a beautiful day and the students really enjoyed the experience. Thank you to Mr. Drew Nadon and Mr. Hancock for going with the group.

We would like to thank Mr. Jim Barry who donated a beautiful homemade park bench to our school playground. The students love it!

Next week IHMS will celebrate its 15th Birthday! We are changing our celebration and theme day to Tuesday, September 16th because our students will be going to see the Heather and Eric performance at the Arts and Culture Centre on Monday.


 
IHMS WEEKLY CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are celebrating friendship week with their friends. They are making friendship salad and friendship people.
Mrs. Hodder’s would like to welcome all of her new Kindergarten English students to her classroom. The students are busy learning their new classroom routines and reading stories with Mrs. Hodder.

Mme. Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is full of excited wonderful boys and girls. They have been busy learning about the Golden Rule and why it is so important. They are also learning their colours in French.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a fabulous first full week back! They are very excited about our first spelling test today and the concert and apple tasting on Monday. The star of the week this week is Alister MacDonnell.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is having a lot of fun exploring patterns. They are also having fun learning songs and routines. It has been a busy start to the year.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning about patterns in math. They are very excited about going to the greenhouse today to do some planting.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is very excited to be in a new classroom this year with Mme. O’Dell. They are busy getting back into the school routine and practicing their French skills.

Ms. Rumbolt’s grade three and four class is very excited about starting a new school year. The class has created “short” summer stories to hang on a clothesline in the class. The grade three’s have already been digging in the dirt as they learn about soil. Both the grade three and four students are enjoying theatre arts class with Ms. Joffred. Here’s to a great year!

Mme. LaChance’s grade three and four French Immersion class is excited to be back in the classroom together again this year. Their school theme is the circus. They are learning all sorts of new words about this topic. In math they are beginning to talk about patterns. They would like to wish everyone a good year!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class are very excited to start off the school year. This year they have a new class of theatre arts in addition to their band and music classes. The students are also very excited to be the “official” IHMS school reporters!

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is pleased to welcome 12 exchange student from Brazil to their classroom this year. On Monday they participated in celebrations for International Literacy Day. On Wednesday they enjoyed a day on the water with the ACAP doing the Trading Books for Boats program.

COMING UP AT IHMS...
The breakfast program will begin on Monday, September 15. It begins each day at 7:30 am.

IHMS will celebrate its 15th birthday on Tuesday, September 16, with a “15” theme day. This event was re-scheduled because of a performance the students are attending on Monday.
