Student Nurse Jessica Allen visited our grade 5 and 6 class this week for a session for Non-Smoking week on Monday. She also visited the grade 4’s to talk about hygiene on Tuesday.

Also, the grade 3 and 4 class started their cross country skiing. They will be doing it for four weeks. Ms. Bennett and Mr. Gillard went skiing with the students.

The kindergarten classes visited Western Regional Memorial Hospital for their orientation session on Wednesday morning.

The Junior High and Level 1 exams finished on Thursday with their Math exam.  Term one ends January 31.

On Thursday the grade 6 girls’ basketball team played against the grade 6 girls from J.J. Curling. Good job lions!

The Student Leadership Council is taking orders for red carnations for Valentine’s Day. The flowers are $3 each and can be pre-ordered until January 31st.

There is also an Avon fundraiser for the playground project for Valentine’s Day. We need to raise another $8,000 for our playground.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Jenna Yetman who travelled to Gander for the Provincial Cadet First Aid Competition as a member of the 511 Humber Air Cadet team.

Congratulations to the figure skaters who competed last weekend in Deer Lake. Congratulations to Brooklynn Companion, Bethany Whelan and Caylie Blake who took gold, Anna Brake who took silver, Kennedi Boland who took bronze, and Abigail Companion who was promoted a level in skating.

The junior kindergarten classes made ice cream and are learning about polar bears-how they keep warm and their habitat.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about traditions in social studies.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is learning about the letter “c” in language. They are really excited to play sight word bingo! In French they are learning about family members.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is doing the letter “c”. They are learning about measurements. They had a great time on their field trip on Wednesday.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is learning how to re-tell stories and put them in order. They are learning about measuring flat surfaces in math.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is comparing masses in math. In social studies they are learning about goods and services in Corner Brook and the surrounding communities.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is making mystery slime in science. They created a book called “Tips for Shoppers”.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class started cross-country skiing on Tuesday. They can’t wait to go again. In math, the grade 3’s are learning about data and the grade 4’s are busy multiplying and dividing.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is finishing their unit on Space and having a great time doing DARE with Constable Bursey.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class are beginning their bridge building for National Geo-Science and Engineering month.  They are also starting to write business essays.  They are happy to have their exams completed.

Winter Carnival day is Monday, February 20th. School will be closed.

The junior high exams begin today with the language exam and the English 1201 exam. Good luck everyone!

Last Wednesday there was an exhibition basketball game for the grade 5 girls against the grade 5 girl’s team at Sacred Heart. Everyone played a great game. Thank you to Mr. George for volunteering to referee the game.

There is an Avon fundraiser this month for the playground project. You can order gift baskets for Valentine’s Day from the main office or any student.

The Student Leadership Council is taking pre-orders for red carnations for Valentine’s Day. The flowers are $3 and the money will go toward the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Students can order through their classroom teacher.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Keely Brothers who came in third place in vault and fifth overall last weekend in a gymnastics competition in St. John’s.

Good luck to the skaters Caylie Blake, Anna Brake, Kennedi Boland, Brooklynn Companion, Bethany Whelan, and Olivia Park who are competing this weekend in Deer Lake.  Also good luck to Lauren Davis who will be in St. John’s this weekend for gymnastics.

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about penguins and next week will start learning about polar bears.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class made snowflakes this week. They are learning about family traditions in social studies.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is learning about sets from 4-7 and five frames. The letter of the week is “O”.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is finished their heritage posters and are having fun learning about the letter “O”.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class started a new unit in math. They are learning about long and short in science and they are studying the four seasons. They are learning about how animals adapt in social studies.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about heritage places in social studies and in math are comparing areas by covering. They really enjoyed a presentation on safety in the woods from Christen Dorcet.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is doing an author study on Robert Munsch. They are doing pattern bracelets on the book “We Share Everything”.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is getting excited about starting the cross country skiing program next week. They have finished working on posters for the heritage places. The grade 3 class has started a novel study on “Lost and Found”.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class started a new book in science about electricity. In language arts they are learning about space.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class went sliding, skating and snowshoeing on Wednesday afternoon at Margaret Bowater Park. They had an excellent time.  They have been very busy preparing for midterm exams.

Coming Up

Cross Country Skiing permission slips for grade 3 and 4 are today Friday, January 20. The skiing program starts on January 24th.

The Kindergarten classes have their hospital orientation session on Wednesday.

  Author Don Downer's visit to our school. Mr. Downer read from several of his books and spoke to the students about our marine environment. Back (L-R): Don Downer and Kiya Morrissey, Front (L-R): Alex Williams, Olivia Park, Keagan Sheppard, and Hailey Colbourne.


Last week on Friday the primary students had a special prayer service with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group. Special guests Hailey Kawaja and Yvette Coleman also helped with the service.

On Wednesday we had pyjama day and a pyjama party in the gym at lunch time for our healthy living commotion.

Our school library is open daily for class visits, but is now also open on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch and staffed by student volunteers Aaron Hancock and Jenna Yetman. Also, Zubia Mahmood, Melissa Castillo and Brian MacKenzie are donating their time during the week to keep our library neat and organized. Great work everyone!

Christmas concert DVDs are now available at the main office.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Nicole Keeping who won a bronze medal in the female Division 10 category and a silver in the 200 m race at the Charles Gorman Speed Skating Championship in Saint John New Brunswick last weekend.

Congratulations to Sydnee Hynes who took first place in the Atom Girls’ 0.5 km race and Patrick Davis who placed second in the Juvenile Boys 0.8 km race at the Ye Old Christmas Cross country Ski race last weekend.

The junior kindergarten classes are having a lot of fun doing winter activities and playing outside.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning French winter words and they had fun doing a snowman activity this week.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is learning about family traditions in social studies. They are also learning about sets of 4 and 5 in math. This week they had their monthly hot chocolate party.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class are doing the letter “y”. They are learning about family traditions and are making sleds out of popsicle sticks.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is doing colour wheels and are finishing adding and subtracting in math. They are also learning about animals that hibernate in the winter.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about senses in science. They had lots of fun on pyjama day.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is making snowmen and learning doubles in math. They are also learning the letter “l” in handwriting.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class went to the long term care facility last week. They read and sang for the patients there. The grade 3’s are making commercials this week and the grade 4’s are learning about research and studying spiders.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is learning about electrical safety in science and learning about astronauts and space in language arts.


Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class had a blast snowshoeing on Wednesday afternoon. They went for a walk, had races and played tag. They are busy studying for their midterm exams.


Coming Up


Junior high exams start on January 20 with 7-9 language exams and the English 1201 exam.

Cross Country Skiing permission slips for grade 3 and 4 are due Friday, January 20. The skiing program starts on January 24.

School re-opened on Tuesday. Everyone is excited to be back. We hope you had a good break.

Before Christmas Santa Claus visited our school to meet with students and staff and have photos taken. Thank you to Santa for his visit and to Mr. Reynolds for taking all the photos.

Thank you to Ms. Tammy Higgins of Model Forest and Mr. Blaine Hussey for meeting with teachers the week before school closed about our school’s greenhouse project.

Author Don Downer visited our school before the break to talk to students about our marine environment and read from his books. He presented to the grade 4 class and the grade 5 and 6 class.

Also on the last day of school we had a school wide breakfast and variety show. Thank you to all the teachers who helped with the breakfast including Mr. Gillard, Mrs. George, Ms. Morrall, Mrs. McHugh and Mrs. Vincent. Thank you to Mr. Spencer for taking photos and all our talented students and teachers for performing in the show.

Our Chamber Choir, Grade 5 Band, and Grade 3 and 4 class are visiting residents at the long term care centre this afternoon. The band will play a few pieces and the chamber choir will sing while the students visit for Old Christmas Day.

This week we welcome Mr. Peter Hiscock who is doing an internship with Mrs. McCarthy and Ms. Stacey Thomas who is doing a work placement in Junior Kindergarten.

Stars of the Week

On Wednesday, Abigail Companion, Aaron Hancock, and Jenna Yetman presented Monsignor Gale with a $500 cheque for the Shepherd’s Fund. The money was raised through a drop and shop fundraiser and a theme day.

The junior kindergarten classes are starting winter activities. They are excited to be back at school.


Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class had a great Christmas break and are excited to start learning more French. They welcome Jackson Ganz to their class.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class had a great Christmas and wish everyone a Happy New Year. They are starting their new year by learning about poetry and winter.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class are doing special wishes balloons and New Year’s poems. They have show and tell on Friday. The letter of the week is “k”.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is glad to be back in school after a nice break.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is super excited to welcome three new students to their class Alyssa Taylor, Colin Spencer and Mattie Azizan. They are writing about New Years resolutions and in social studies they are learning about how paper is made.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is writing New Years resolutions. They are learning 1 more, 2 more, 1 less, 2 less and comparing numbers in math. They had show and tell on Wednesday.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is sending letters across Canada for the great Canadian Mail Race. They would like to welcome Gina Spencer to their class.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class were the winners of the winter carnival slogan contest. Their slogan was “Feel the magic in the air Winter Carnival 2012 is finally here”. With their prize the class decided to buy a Wii system. This week they are starting a new unit in language arts all about space and they will begin D.A.R.E next week. They are excited to welcome Mr. Hiscock to their class for the next few months.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class is busy preparing for exam time. In gym this week they had a great time playing soccer baseball. They would like to wish Nicole Keeping good luck in her speed skating competition this weekend in New Brunswick.
