Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (15/6/18)

Last Friday evening we held our Level III Graduation Ceremony. The evening began with Mass at All Hallows and followed with a dinner, speeches, presentation of the graduation diploma, and a dance for grade seven to Level III. We would like to send congratulations to our graduate, Jayson Griffin!
This week was a very busy one as our school community presented the musical performance “Brundibar.” We would like to thank Mrs. Benyon-Martinec, Ms. Alteen, Mr. Ian Locke, Dr. Gary Graham, Ms. Miranda MacDonald, Mrs. Bishop, Mme. Moss, and all our students and staff on a wonderful show. The musical was performed for audiences on Wednesday and Thursday evening.
Today is our end of year sports day. Mr. Drew’s grade seven and eight students are organizing activities for the whole school.
Monday will be another exciting day in our school as we host the annual Spring Fling Market & Art Expo from 11 am to 2:00 pm. The event will include a greenhouse plant sale, book sale, STEMP Expo, Art Show, games, and petting zoo. Books will be sold for $0.50 and $1.00 each or bring a re-usable bag and you can fill it for $10.00.
Junior and senior high exams begin on Monday morning. We would like to wish all of our students the best of luck!
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Isralea Ngania who received her  red stripe belt in Tae Kwon Do and received a gold medal in sparing and a gold medal in form. In addition, she received an award for Most Dedicated.
Congratulations to Lysea Ngania who received her green stripe belt in Tae Kwon Do and who received a gold medal in form.
Congratulations to Rebecca Janes who completed 9 tests over the last few weeks and has completed all components to reach Star 5 level in figure skating.
Congratulations to Mark Janes who passed his Green Belt testing in Tae Kwon Do. Mark also received a gold medal in Form and a silver medal in Sparring in the Chong Lee Memorial competition in Stephenville this past weekend. Congratulations to Robert Morrissey who also participated in the tournament over the weekend.
Mark and Robert’s team from Bennett’s Tae Kwan Do also received the most points during the competition and was awarded the prestigious Chong Lee Memorial Cup.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are preparing for the art show next Monday and making gifts for Father’s Day. The students are looking forward to summer break.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class would like to wish all their dads a happy Father’s Day! They are busy finishing the work in their Little Green Thumbs Garden and science journals. They are excited about the sports day today.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is finishing up their surprises for their dads for Sunday. They had a great time performing in the musical and are excited to participate in sports day. They would like to wish all the dads a happy Father’s Day.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is super excited to be involved in the show. They have been learning about simple machines this week. The children were transplanting a variety of plants to get ready for the Spring Fling Market.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class enjoyed taking part in the musical. Every student did such a wonderful job. Now they are looking forward to the Spring Fling Market & Art Expo. They have so much art to show!
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is enjoying working with their Canada themed vocabulary in preparation for July 1.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has been working hard on their cumulative review sheets for each subject as they approach the end of the school year.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class is preparing for year end activities, including: the musical, Spring Fling Market & Art Expo, sports day, and the variety show.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is finishing off their last language arts unit on sequencing. They are learning about King Arthur and the Legend of the Sword in the Stone. The students had a great time performing in the school musical on Wednesday and Thursday.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class had a great time performing in the musical. They loved the costumes and dancing!
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is preparing for the upcoming exams. The grade seven and eight students organized the sports day activities for today.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is preparing for final exams and public exams next week.
Coming Up
Student Leadership Council Year End Variety Show will be on Thursday at 1:00 pm.

School closes for summer vacation at 12:00 on Friday, June 22. The end of year awards assembly will begin at 9:30 am in our school gym.
Adam Thomas, Allie Lovell, and Sophie Tucker enjoyed some time in the greenhouse transplanting items in preparation for the Spring Fling Market & Expo.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (8/6/18)

Last Sunday students received their First Holy Communion at All Hallows. We would like to thank Mrs. George, Mrs. Coleman, and Father Terry for helping to prepare the students and making it a memorable and special day for students and their families. Students who received first Holy Communion included: Cameron Bishop. Angelina Burton, Isac Burton, Sylvia Burton, Megan Cohrane, Teresa Coleman, Katy Hancock, Edward Kelly, Ethan Lahey, Joel Lyver, Madeline Murphy, Jacob Youden, Makayla Reddy, and Mikka Ochoa.
On Monday our school hosted the annual school science fair. All classes participated with either class or individual projects.  Winners in our annual Science Fair included: Carter Bromley, Luke Coleman, Keira Clarke, Max Chrappa, Carly Johannesen, Leah Lainey, Alister MacDonnell, Israela Ngania, Gabriel Rowsell, and Brooke Watton.
The Kindergarten graduation ceremony was held in the school gym on Thursday evening. We would like to extend a special thank you to Mr. Graham for attending and accompanying the Kindergarten Choir and Mrs. Benyon Martinec who conducted. Mme. King and Mrs. Hodder would like to extend congratulations to all the graduates on a job well done.
Our students have been actively practicing for the musical this week. We would like to thank Mr. King who was also very busy this week preparing and building the set.
Our Level III graduation ceremony is being held tonight for our graduate, Jayson Griffin. The ceremony will include Mass at All Hallows at 5 pm followed by a barbecue and dance for students in grade seven to Level III.
We would like to wish a happy birthday today to Mrs. Coleman from our IHMS school family.
Today is Mrs. Kennedy’s last day at our school. We would like to wish her the best of luck in her new position and thank her for her 18 years at IHMS!
Stars of the Week

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are  so proud of their classmates who performed with the Graham Academy and Atlantic Choir last week. They had a great time participating in the school science fair.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is illustrating the effects of pollution on sea animals through the science fair activities. Mrs. Hodder would like to congratulate her 2018 graduating class on a job well done!
Mrs. George’s grade one English class really enjoyed the see the projects and participating in science fair on Monday. They are finishing their spelling tests and math for the year.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class has been learning about geometry. They did a shape scavenger hunt. They have been busy with their Father’s Day gifts. As the school year winds down they are more anxious for summer to come.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class enjoyed seeing all the wonderful experiments at the science fair. They are finishing their last unit in math on geometry. They are very busy, but looking forward to summer break!
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is enjoying practicing for the musical. The grade three and four students are working on their last vocabulary unit on Canada. The grade five and sixes are wrapping up their science unit on matter.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class presented a science fair experiment on airplane drag. They loved making paper airplanes and flying them to test their hypothesis.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class is really excited to dive into their last vocabulary study on the theme of “Canada”. The students are working hard to prepare for the musical.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class enjoyed their talking stick activity in social studies. They are preparing their STEM builds for the Spring Fling.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is working on congruent and non-congruent shapes. They are reading “Nokum is My Teacher” in language arts. In science they are learning about the five kingdoms.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is attending the Level III graduation this evening. They would like to send a huge congratulations to our graduate, Jayson Griffin!
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is busy preparing for the upcoming final exams. Everyone is excited about the graduation this evening.
Coming Up
The IHMS School Musical Brundibar will be performed on June 13th and 14th at 6:30 pm.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (1/6/18)

Students received their First Reconciliation on Monday evening at All Hallows with Father Terry. Congratulations to Brooklyn Pittman, Jamie White-Robertson, Rotém Philips Grobbelaar,  Robert Morrissey, Noah Wall, Jacob Cull, Uriah Cull, Liam Couture. Thank you to Mrs. English, Mrs. Dicks, Mrs. King for volunteering with the service and to Mrs. George who prepared the students.
Students preparing to receive their First Holy Communion took part in a special celebration on Tuesday evening with Mrs. Coleman in the school chapel. The First Holy Communion is this Sunday at All Hallows.
The Student Leadership Council organized theme days for Spirit Week . It began on Monday with Character Day, then Wacky Wednesday, Throwback Thursday and Formal Friday. It was a lot of fun to see everyone’s costumes!
Our school public health nurse, Mrs. Lynette Christopher, visited the school this week to present to grade one on dental hygiene and grade seven on body image.
Our entire school has been busy preparing for the musical, Brundibar. The show will be performed on June 13 and 14th.

Congratulations to Ben Griffin and Zoe McCarthy who participated in the Mudslide Bike races on Sunday at Prince Edward Park.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are making special gifts for Father’s Day and practicing for the school musical.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class enjoyed the spirit week activities. They examined their worm casting in the greenhouse from their worm compost. They sampled some traditional foods eating during the Ramadan tradition.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is busy getting ready for the science fair. They have three really neat experiments. They are finishing off their last unit in math.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is happy to report that the lettuce in their aquaponics garden has started to sprout its second leaves or true leaves. They concluded their science unit on living things this week and made an art project inspired by the insects they discussed.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is very excited for their classmates who will celebrate their First Holy Communion on Sunday morning. They are preparing for the science fair next week by doing experiments.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is excited about the upcoming science fair. The grade three and four students are diving into their final unit of math and the grade five and six students are preparing to start a series of experiments related to combining states of matter.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has finished their geometry unit in math. They learned all about 2D and 3D shapes, which they have incorporated into their drawing and building structures.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class found out this week that their “k group” tomatoes spent six weeks in space as seeds. They were very excited because they discovered that the group of seeds actually grew faster.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is finishing their final preparations for the STEM expo. They are also concluding their unit on  their properties and changes in materials unit.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is learning about vertebrates and invertebrates. In math they are learning about equilaterals, isosceles, and scalene triangles.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class enjoyed the spirit week! They completed their novel study on City of Ember this week with some investigation into the author’s use of darkness as a symbol throughout the novel.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is preparing for final exams and the upcoming Level III graduation. Science 1206 students are studying weather systems and cloud types. Chemistry 2202 students are continuing their study of organic chemistry.
Coming Up
School Science Fair on June 4th.
Kindergarten Graduation is June 7 at 6:00 pm and High School Graduation is June 8 at 5:00 pm.
