Our breakfast program began this week!
The breakfast program runs each morning from 7:30 to 8:15 am.

Our school has received an Arts Smarts Grant for $1,888 to complete a project called “Discovering the Ecosystems”. The project will be a language arts, science and art program for grades three, four and five. The project will begin in October and end in June. Our students will be working with local artist Jane Reagh.

There was a meeting for the Europe trip on Monday evening for parents of students in grades five to level two. The trip will take place in 2016 during the Easter holiday.

Also on Monday night the junior kindergarten teachers participated in a workshop.

On Wednesday our school celebrated National Tree day with all our classes planting items in the school greenhouse. In addition, our students wore fall themed colours and participated in a “boomerang lunch”. Students returned home with all the garbage from their lunch bag to demonstrate how much garbage we have and to encourage us to reduce this garbage. In addition to celebrate National Tree Day all the students put a leaf on a school tree in the lobby and made a pledge to protect our earth.

Our cross country running team had their first meet on Wednesday. The fun run was hosted by sacred heart and took place at Jubilee Field. Congratulations to all of our runners. The team meets every Monday and Wednesday and includes students in grades three to level two.
On Thursday evening our teachers held curriculum night in the school gym. This was an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers and talk about the school curriculum and resources.



Congratulations to Mrs. Angel McCarthy who was selected for the position of Vice Principal for the 2015-2016 school year.

Congratulations to our cross country runners who took part in their first running meet this week at Jubilee Field.
Congratulations to Ms. Simms on the birth of her baby boy, Parker, this week.

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes are talking about apples this week. They learned about where apples grow and how they taste. They also learned about trees for National Tree Day and what they can do to help the earth. All the students visited the greenhouse to plant seeds.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class was excited to celebrate National Tree Day this week. They discussed how trees help us and how they can help them. The students have been working very hard on sorting and patterning in math.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning all about scientists this week. The students planted spinach in the greenhouse on National Tree day. In social studies they are learning about how each and every one of them is unique.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about temperature this week. The class has finished their first unit in math. In art class they had a lot of fun making owls out of torn paper. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning all about the sun in science class. In social studies they are learning about different ways to communicate. They had a lot of fun planting in the greenhouse this week!

Ms. Park’s grade two class started an author / illustrator study on Barbara Reid in language arts class. They are enjoying her books and examining her beautiful pictures. The class was excited to plant lettuce in the greenhouse on Wednesday. In social studies the students are making timelines. They are enjoying seeing photos of their friends as babies and toddlers.

Mme. O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class really enjoyed the planting in the greenhouse on Wednesday. They are working on developing their green thumbs.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class had their first spelling test of the year this week. The class really enjoyed planting swiss chard in the greenhouse on Wednesday as part of National Tree Day.

Mlle. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class has started interactive notebooks in science class. The grade five students had an excellent time at the forestry field trip to Margaret Bowater Park on Wednesday.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a wonderful time at the Forestry Week activities at the park on Wednesday. The class enjoyed learning about forest fires, tree planting, wildlife safety and much more. The students stayed for the opening ceremonies and enjoyed the community barbecue.  Today, as part of Forestry Week, the students are making bird seed hanging ornaments to hang in trees near their homes.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class have been hard at work this week writing essays in language arts class. The students were excited to go on a field trip to hike to the waterfall at Marble Mountain on Wednesday. The junior high basketball team will have tryouts next week. The students are also looking forward to a field trip to Mrs. King’s cabin.
 
COMING UP...
September 30 is our annual Terry Fox school walk.

Medical theme day is on October 2. We will be collecting an open donation in aid of the Janeway Telethon. Students are encouraged to dress up for the theme day.

This Week We Celebrated Our School's 16th Year!

We would like to welcome everyone back for another school year. We are excited to see our old friends again and meet new friends.

This year we welcome two new teachers to our staff. Mme. Heather Moss is teaching French Immersion students in grades three, four and five this year. Also, we welcome Mme. Amanda Murphy who is teaching core French, social studies and health classes. Bienvenue to both new teachers.

Last week we celebrated the opening of school Mass with Bishop Hundt and Deacon White at All Hallows.

On Wednesday, our school celebrated its 16th birthday! We celebrated in the gym with a special assembly, cookies and milk. All classes took part in the celebration by singing songs, reading poetry and acting. In addition, all of our students dressed up in celebration of the number 16!

Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group led a vigil for refugees with our students, staff and families on Thursday at All Hallows.

This week our cross-country running team began practicing. The team’s first meet is next Wednesday at Sacred Heart.
There will be a Europe Trip meeting on Monday, September 21 at 6:30 pm for parents of students in grades five to level two who are interested in going on the trip this Easter.

Congratulations to Emma Cook, Ivor Cook, Elizabeth Barry and William Barry who participated in the Veitch Physio Fall 1 km race for kids. Congratulations also to Mrs. McCarthy who ran the Veitch Physio Fall 15 km race on Sunday.

Congratulations to Jayden Lempriere who participated in the Atlantic Girls’ Baseball Tournament in Grand Falls this past weekend.

CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are celebrating the theme “All About Me”. The children are busy learning each other’s name and meeting new friends. They made finger prints and self-portraits, and are learning about healthy eating and about the characteristics of children and families.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is excited to be beginning their adventure in French Immersion. They are learning more and more French. You can ask them to count to dix. They are also working on learning the new routines in the kindergarten classroom and enjoying their old and new friends.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is excited to be back at school. They are learning busy learning the new routines in kindergarten. They are learning about Chester and the kissing hand. They have made a racoon craft and completed some first days of school project. The students loved taking part in the 16th birthday celebrations on Wednesday.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been busy learning their new routines and songs. They have been talking rights and responsibilities and how they can help everyone get along. In math they have been having a lot of fun working in groups during centres.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is very excited to begin a brand new year! They wrote about their favourite things this week and had fun with patterning in math class. Today they are having their first spelling test, followed by an apple taste test! Yum!

Ms. Park’s grade two class is having fun working with patterns in math class. They read “Pirates Go to School” and wrote why they “arrrgh” excited about second grade.

Mme. O’Dells’ grade two French Immersion class had a great first week back to school. They are learning lots of new things and really enjoyed the birthday celebration on Wednesday.

Mme. Moss’s grade three, four and five French Immersion class is working on their daily five stations. In their stations they are doing some reading, spelling and learning about the life cycle of plants.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class is excited to be back in school. They have been doing lots of back to school writing. They are also happy to report that they have a new class fish names “swimmy junior”.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is excited to be back in school. The grade five students are really looking forward to writing the weekly news articles for the Western Star. The grade six students are reading a book called “The Tree of Life” which explains how all species on Earth are classified.  In physical education the students are playing games which practice their soccer skills.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class welcomes many new students this year.  The class is enjoying a day on the water with ACAP Humber Arm program “Trading Books for Boats”. They are looking forward to the Student Leadership Council elections next week.


COMING UP...
Curriculum night is on Thursday, September 24th from 7-8:30 pm in our school gym.
