Grade two students Ava Hodder, Cole Lyver, and Lily Smallwood show the marigolds and corn they planted in the greenhouse with their classmates.
For Kids Eat Smart Apple Day, students created and placed an apple on the apple tree in the cafeteria. Kindergarten French Immersion student, Cameron Bishop, shows one of our moms, Tarragh Shanahan, the apple that he made.
Immaculate Heart of Mary School hosted its annual Junior High Speak-off last week. Rebekah Calbert was the winner and is seen with her Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Angel McCarthy, at the awards presentation.
 
 
Last week the Student Leadership Council in conjunction with Mr. Drew Nadon’s homeroom class hosted a bake sale in aid of the relief efforts in Fort McMurray. Thank you to all our families for their support of this initiative. They raised $150!

We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the faces of the future IHMS students who visited our school last Wednesday for the junior kindergarten and kindergarten English and French orientation sessions.

The grade three and four class thoroughly enjoyed their Ducks Unlimited Tour last week. Thank you to the parents who drove the students and thank you to Mr. Dumaresque for the ice cream treat for the whole group!

Congratulations to IHMS for their Achievement in Community Excellence Award; IHMS received the Corner Brook Environment Award. Rebekah Calbert accepted the award on behalf of our IHMS family during the ceremony last Wednesday evening. This award is in recognition for our environmental initiatives in 2015.

The grade four English and French students continued their collage window art in the cafeteria this week with artist Jane Reagh. The students are depicting the oceans, boreal forest and wetland biomes in a beautiful and light catching display. This project is one aspect of their Art Smarts Grant.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Liam Brinston who received a trophy for being runner up in the family twosome bowling competition.

We would like to congratulate all of our students who performed in the annual Dance Studio West recital last week.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “t” and preparing for the musical “Oliver”. Our Junior Kindergarten teachers participated in a Guiding Behaviour Workshop on Wednesday evening.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is looking forward to the upcoming science fair on May 30th. They are learning about things that sink and things that float. The students have been busy preparing their songs for the musical “Oliver”.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is continuing learning about time, money and graphing in math.  They are excited to see peppers growing in their garden.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about how living things breathe and how our breath changes depending on their activity level. They have their last two science experiments ready for the science fair. They are also busy preparing for the musical!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is learning about 2D and 3D shapes in math. The students were excited to plant their pumpkin seeds they harvested in the fall from their classroom pumpkins. They are also talking about how technology has changed the world.

Ms. Park’s grade two class visited the Bay of Island’s SPCA on Thursday to make their  class donation.  In Language Arts, grade two students are doing dinosaur research. In Math, they are making 3D objects using marshmallows and toothpicks. Everyone had fun eating the marshmallows. In Science, they will be making pulleys out of K'nex.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class have had a very busy week! The grade four and five students  were in full swing with their French novel study of The Hunger Games. The grade fours really enjoyed working with local artist, Jane Reagh. They are completing a cross-curricular science and art habitat window display. The grade threes are working hard to prepare for their upcoming provincial math assessment.

Ms. Crocker’s grade three and four class are excited about the upcoming “Oliver” musical. The grade three students are using the iMovie app on the iPads to create commercials based on their own products. In math they are finished all their units and doing a year end review. The grade four students are making their own menu’s for a family restaurant. In math they are beginning their last unit on measurement.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is getting very excited for the science fair next week. The grade five students are reading a book in language arts about Jewish children hiding in Southern France during the Nazi occupation during World War Two. The grade six students have been busy creating their own IHMS Clue board game. The grade five and six class would like to wish Mr. MacDonnell a happy birthday today!

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class are gearing up for final exams. The students are finishing off their courses and beginning their review. This week they continued painting the backdrop for the musical. The painting is a black and white image of the London Bridge and the clock tower.

Last Friday our school celebrated Apple Day with the Kids Eat Smart Coordinator Sandra Burden. We would like to thank Ms. Park who created the apple tree in the cafeteria, Mrs. George for her delicious apple muffins and both teachers for volunteering to help serve during Apple Day. All students placed an apple on the tree in the cafeteria to celebrate our love for apples.

Our school took part in the Municipal awareness Day Colouring Contest.  Last Wednesday, was the official Municipal Awareness Day.  We would like to congratulate our school winners in the colouring poster contest, they were: Rachael Griffin, Nicholas Mauger and Emily Payne.

We were very lucky to have Mr. Fred Fox, brother of Terry Fox, visit our school on Thursday afternoon. During his run across Canada Terry Fox visited IHMS. It was an honour to have his brother visit us to present a five year banner for our participation in the annual Terry Fox Walk.

The Level 1 Girls’ basketball team travelled to St. John’s last weekend to participate in a tournament. The girls’ lost out in the semi-finals. Thank you to Mr. Drew Nadon and Mr. Ryley Nadon for their dedication to the team this year.

We would like to thank Mr. Hancock and the members of the grade five and six class for their school yard clean up on Friday afternoon.

On Friday members of the Knights of Columbus visited our school to present an award to Ella Rashleigh who was the provincial winner in the “Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest” for ages 5-7 and Trinity Rouse who was the the provincial winner for ages 8-10 category. Mr. Pat Gambin and Mr. Keith Kean made the presentation to the girls.

Our school hosted the annual IHMS Junior High Speak Off on Tuesday evening. We would like to thank our judges, Mr. Pat Duke, Ms. Maureen Mennie and Ms. Heather Perry for judging the event. Our speakers included: William Bennett, Myles Calbert, Rebekah Calbert, Max Chrappa, Paige Walsh, Anna MacKenzie, and José Garcia Suarez. We would like to congratulate Rebekah Calbert who was the overall winner. Rebekah spoke on “What It’s Like to Be Friends with Exchange Students”.

There were many new faces visiting our school this week as we welcomed new junior kindergarten, and kindergarten English and French students during our annual orientation sessions. New students visited our school to meet with teachers and feel what it is like to go to our school. Our current students in junior kindergarten and kindergarten visited their future classrooms too.

Yesterday, the grade three and four students attended a Ducks Unlimited Field Trip as part of their science curriculum.

The Student Leadership Council in conjunction with the junior and senior high class hosted a bake sale on Thursday in aid of the Red Cross’ Aid Relief for families affected by the Alberta Wildfires.

The IHMS school family would like to congratulate Revered Andrew White on his ordination this past Sunday at Holy Redeemer Parish.

We would like to extend “un viaggio sicuro” to the students and teachers travelling this weekend to Italy as part of the EF Education Tours. The group will visit the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel and many other educational sites during their stay. 
 

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Carter Bromley, Noah Evans, Ethan Hicks, Mark Janes, Daniel Osmond, Caleb Rashleigh and Ella Rashleigh who received hockey medalists from the Corner Brook Hockey Banquet. In addition, Carter Bromley received a most dedicated award, while Noah Evans and Caleb Rashleigh both received most improved awards.

Congratulations to Jamie White-Robertson who received a certificate from the Canadian Cancer Society for the donation of her hair.

Congratulations to Luke Coleman who placed second and Alister MacDonnell who placed seventh in the Western Regional Beaver Buggy Kub Kar and Scout Track Rally held in Corner Brook this past weekend.

Congratulations to Ben Griffin who participated in the 2016 Mud Slide Series Long Course x2. He placed first in the Dirt Squad Expert Category.

Congratulations to Jordan Dicks-Park who received trophies for family twosome runner up, combo team,  a silver medal for his division, and a silver medal for top score in bowling. Congratulations also to Logan McCarthy who received a bronze and gold medal in bowling.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes were very excited this week to take part in Kindergarten English and French Immersion orientations. The students have been busy learning their new songs for the upcoming musical “Oliver”.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class was very excited to spend the afternoon on Wednesday in Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion classroom as part of their grade one orientation session. The class has been busy practicing their songs for the upcoming “Oliver” musical.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class spent a wonderful afternoon on Wednesday with Mrs. George in her grade one classroom. The students were excited to have a class upstairs! The class has been enjoying the nicer weather this week.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has started their experiments for the upcoming science fair. They are learning about maps and legends in social studies this week. They are glad to report that Hala had a really happy birthday this week!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class have been talking about how things are different today than they were 50 years ago. One of the things that has changed a lot is our use of technology in everyday life. The students are working on an art project that features colourful birds. Their romaine lettuce has tripled in size this week! The students love going to the greenhouse.

Ms. Park’s grade two class was busy this week learning about 3D objects in math. The class made simple machines in science and are putting the final touches on their falling in space art work.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class made a thank you card for the police officers in our community for National Police Week.  The grade three students have been reviewing their math unit in preparation for the end of year CRT. The grade four students are learning about habitats in science, while the grade five students are studying the weather.

Ms. Crocker’s grade three and four class enjoyed the Maritime Brass Quintet performance on Wednesday morning. The grade three students are making art with 2D shapes this week. In language arts they are discussing how products aren’t always what they appear to be in advertisements. The grade four students are working with lines of symmetry in math. They have started a joint art and science program with the French Immersion class and artist Jane Reagh.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class have been playing a variety of games and solving mysteries to practice their inference strategy in language arts. The students participated in a band workshop on Wednesday with the Maritime Brass Quintet who played a concert at our school.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class began painting the background scene for the musical this week. The grade seven to nine students participated in the annual IHMS Junior High Speak Off. The class would like to congratulate Rebekah Calbert who was the overall winner.

We would like to congratulate our three teams who participated in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge at Grenfell Campus last Thursday. The team consisting of Isaac Buckingham, Cameron Peddle, Madison Noel and Anna Mackenzie received bronze medals, and the team consisting of Jack Richardson, Aaron White, and Max Chrappa received silver medals. Our teams competed against 27 other teams from around the Western Region. Each team won $500 worth of school supplies from School Specialty and $200 in gift certificates from Indigo/Chapters; a total of $1,400 in prizes for our school. Students also received a medal, gift package and $50 gift card from Indigo/Chapters.

Last week we also sent two teams to the ROV Mate Underwater Robotics competition in St. John’s.  Two teams participated in this event. The first team was José Suarez, Maria Reynolds, Thiago Calvalcante, Ryan Miller and Emily O’Bryan. The second team was Rebekah Calbert, Isaac Buckingham, Rondinelly Duarte, and Italo Xavier. Both teams had an excellent showing in the event. Seventeen teams participated in the non-competitive event. The teams would like to thank Mr. Martel of the Greenwood Inn and Suites for allowing them the use of their pool for practice time.

Last Saturday we had six students represent our school at the Western Region Heritage Fair hosted at Corner Brook Intermediate. In grade four we had Natalie Parsons and Reyd Ward; in grade five we had Simon Boitsefski, Clare Coleman, and Colin Spencer; and in grade seven we had Myles Calbert. Colin received a top twenty medal and a medal for the History Award. Along with his medal he received a magazine subscription to Kayak Magazine.

On Sunday, Myles Calbert, Rebekah Calbert and Paige Walsh celebrated their confirmation in the Catholic faith during mass at Holy Redeemer Parish.

Our school was the recipient of a $500 Crime Prevention Grant for our project: “Be A Buddy”.

Our after school sewing program produced beautiful mother’s day gifts last week including aprons, stuffed cats and pin cushions.

Today we are celebrating Apple Day in the breakfast program. Students made apples to place on a tree in the cafeteria. The breakfast program is serving all kinds of apple treats today.

We would like to thank our students, their families and the community for supporting our Eco Kids Battery Buster Contest. Our school recycled 680 pounds of batteries! We will continue recycling batteries as part of our regular recycling program which includes beverage containers, bread tags, and used phones.

We would like to thank the Cull family for their donation of organic garden seeds for our school greenhouse.

We would like to send our condolences to Mr. Gerard Coleman and family on their recent loss.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Aaron Keough who received his yellow belt last week in karaté.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Barry, William Barry, Hala Parsons, and Lydia Parsons who participated in a 1 km kid’s run, and Natalie Parsons participated in the 2.5 km kid’s run as part of the Physical Rehab Spring Opener last Sunday in Massey Drive.

Congratulations to Cameron Bishop, Ivor Cook, Charlie Hynes, Bryant Osmond, and Lydia Rashleigh who received medals and a beautiful trophy at the Corner Brook Minor Hockey Banquet.

Congratulations to Jemma Butler who is the Provincial Winner in the World Climate Poster Contest.

We would like to send congratulations to Deacon Andrew White who will be ordained as a priest in our diocese this coming Sunday.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “r” and talking about science concepts for the upcoming school science fair.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class made apples and doing apple activities in science this week to place on the tree for Apple Day. They are looking at heavy versus light in math class using balance scales.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is talking about different types of weather in science class. They are really looking forward to the Apple Day celebrations in the breakfast program this morning. They are continuing to study graphing and time in math.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class started their “Wonderful Me” books were they will write nice things about all their classmates. They are enjoying their last math unit on adding and subtracting to 20.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class are studying living things and what they need to live. We have a variety of plants growing in the greenhouse. They were surprised to see how quickly their turnip sprouted this week. They have been talking about Canada’s Food Guide and the daily requirements for their age.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is making simple machines in science class. In math they are starting a unit on geometry and learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class had a great week. The grade three students are finishing off their math program and gearing up for the end of year provincial assessment. The grade four students are teaming up with the English class on a science project. The grade five students are preparing to start a novel study.

Ms. Crocker’s grade three and four class had a busy week! The grade three students are working on making 2D shapes and recognizing 3D shapes. In language arts they are creating their own commercials for products. The grade four students are also working with shapes and symmetry in math. In language arts they are following directions and building a castle from milk cartons.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class are enjoying the new after school volley ball program. The grade five students practiced writing directions in language arts class this week. They wrote directions to different locations in the school and had their classmates follow the directions to find secret clues. In math they are preparing for a unit test next week. The grade six students are writing scripts of their favourite books. They would like to congratulation Jack, Aaron and Isaac on their performance in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge last week.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class created a video this week for the Provincial Hot Shots Contest. The grade nine to level two students went to St. John’s over the weekend with Mrs. McCarthy and Mr. Hancock for the ROV Mate Underwater Robotics Competition. The event was held at the Marine Institute in their Flume tank. The grade seven and eight students participated in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge at Grenfell Campus last Thursday. The girls’ basketball team is participating in a tournament in St. John’s this weekend.

Coming Up

Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten English and French orientation sessions are being held on Wednesday, May 18 from 1:15-2:30 for students currently registered for September 2016.

Level 1 Student, Maria Reynolds, models her sweatshirt line "ACTV Clothing". ACTV clothing was her business proposal for the YMCA Enterprise Olympics. Maria's business was to create a line of clothing called Appreciate Canadian Troops and Veterans (ACTV). The clothing brand would donate profits to support veterans suffering from PTSD. 

 

The kindergarten to grade six students attended the Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador production of “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” last Friday afternoon at the Arts and Culture Centre. It was a great show! Congratulations to Lily Smallwood and Isabelle Mercier who performed in the show!

The grade six girls’ and boys’ participated in soccer tournaments this weekend.  The girls’ played at Sacred Heart School and displayed great teamwork. This was the first time many of the girls played in a soccer game. Our school hosted the grade six boys’ tournament. We are proud to say the boys are the City Champions. The boys were undefeated in the tournament. In the semi-finals, it went to a shoot out with Aria Kazerouni scoring the winning goal. Isaac Buckingham scored the winning goal in the Championship game. Congratulations to both teams and their coaches on great tournaments.

Our school hosted an open family skate on Saturday evening at the Kinsmen Arena. A good time was had by all. Thank you to the Warren family for donating the ice time to our school.

IHMS held its annual used book sale on Sunday in aid of the school library. The sale is still set up for families to browse. Books are $1-$3 or fill a reusable bag for $10.

The school photographer visited our school on Monday for the Spring Photo Shoot. All students in junior kindergarten to level two had their photos taken. In addition, family and sibling photos were also taken.

Ms. Park’s grade two class hosted a bake sale on Monday in aid of the SPCA. The class raised $135!

On Thursday, IHMS sent three teams to the Let’s Talk Science Challenge at Grenfell Campus. Students studied packages of information on science, technology, engineering and math. They prepared by taking quizzes and design challenges.

The IHMS Underwater Robotics Team is in St. John’s today competing in their annual competition.  We wish them luck!

We would like to extend our condolences to the Griffin family on their loss this week.

Congratulations to Phyllis Gallant who was the winner in the Chase the Ace on Sunday night. The jackpot has still not been won. The next Chase the Ace will be Tuesday, May 10th. There will be no Chase the Ace this Sunday in observance of Mother’s Day.

We would like to wish the Regional Heritage Fair participants luck this Saturday at the Western Regional Heritage Fair hosted at Corner Brook Intermediate School.  Representing our school we have Simon Boitsefski, Myles Calbert, Clare Coleman, Natalie Parsons, Colin Spencer, and Reyd Ward. The Heritage Fair is open to the public beginning at 1:45 pm on Saturday.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Mark Janes who received a Tae Kwon Do certificate this week for “Awesome Kick” .

Congratulations to Ivor Cook who won a gold medal at a Tae Kwon Do tournament in St. John’s this past weekend.

Congratulations to Teresa Coleman and Jamie White Robertson who cut their hair and donated it to the Canadian Cancer Society this week.

Congratulations to Jordan Park who was chosen fourth pick for the Western United Wolves Team for the Newfoundland Summer Games.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the letter “q”. They have been busy this week talking about their mom’s and preparing for Mother’s Day.

Mme. Foley’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is practicing their song for the school musical. The students are enjoying the warmer weather and watching things grow in science. They would like to wish all their mom’s a happy Mother’s Day!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class would like to wish all their wonderful mom’s a Happy Mother’s Day. This week they are working on time in math and weather in science.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has been busy working on crafts and writing pieces for their wonderful moms. Yesterday they celebrated World Catholic Education Day. Today the class is watching the documentary “March of the Penguins” to finish up their penguin unit. They would like to wish all the moms out there a happy Mother’s Day on Sunday.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is learning about nutrition this week. They are excited to see how their lettuce and sugar snap peas are growing. They have also prepared a special Mother’s Day project.

Ms. Park’s grade two class is learning ways to keep their oceans healthy. Yesterday, they celebrated World Catholic Education Day in their class. This week they raised $135 for the SPCA with a class bake sale.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four and five French Immersion class really enjoyed the production of “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” last Friday afternoon. The grade three class is beginning their last unit in math on Geometry. They are also learning about how commercials are made. The grade four students are finishing their unit on decimals and learning about budgeting. The students are discussing how to “get the best bang for your buck”. The grade five students are reading maps and planning a trip to some special attractions in Vancouver in their English language arts class.

Ms. Crockers’s grade three and four class really enjoyed going to see “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” last week.  The grade three students are beginning their final unit in math on geometry. They are also analyzing commercials.  The grade four students are working on a new geometry unit on 3D shapes. In language arts they are following instructions to build a castle out of milk cartons.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class made posters this week for World Ocean’s Day. The grade five students are learning about machines and making a video about recycling batteries. The grade six students participated in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge at Grenfell campus on Thursday.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level two class participated in the “Let’s Talk Science Challenge” on Thursday at Grenfell Campus. The Underwater Robotics team are in St. John’s today participating in a competition. Good luck!

Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten English and French orientation sessions are being held on Wednesday, May 18 from 1:15-2:30 for students currently registered for September 2016.
