The
grade one classes were very happy to report that they filled 84 shoe boxes for
Operation Christmas Child. Last year they packaged 60 boxes. A special thank
you goes out to all our students and families for their support of the
fundraiser.
Our
school will continue to collect bread tags until December 11. We reached our
goal of 5,000 bread tags and have collected another 2,200 bread tags. For every
5,000 bread tags collected a wheelchair will be purchased for an elderly person
in South Africa.
This
week students in kindergarten to grade six took part in presentations on Monday
and Tuesday with representatives from Newfoundland Light and Power. The theme
was “Take Charge”. Sessions were given by Ashleigh Halliday and Carl Bishop.
All the classes really enjoyed the presentations.
On
Thursday our students and staff wore special moustaches to support Movember.
Students donated $1 for men’s health initiatives. Student Leadership council
students were collecting donations and painting moustaches for students throughout
the day.
The
grade 6 girls’ basketball team is playing in a tournament this weekend at
Grenfell Campus. The first game is today at 5:30 pm.
This
Saturday our grade 6 to level 1 students are hosting a Drop and Shop
Fundraiser. Families are invited to drop their child at the school between 10
am and 4 pm while they Christmas shop. Children aged three and over are welcome
to attend for a minimum donation of $20.
Sunday
is our annual Tree Trimming Social. New families are invited to bring an
ornament to hang on the school Christmas tree. Join us for prizes, snacks and
singing from 4:00-5:30 pm.
The
gym classes will continue broomball for the next week. After this, Mr. Ryley
Nadon will be starting the first annual Christmas mini-hockey tournament.

The
junior kindergarten classes are learning the letter “f” and number “6”. They
have begun practicing for the Christmas concert. They welcomed Shane Matthews
to their classroom this week.
Mme.
Brake’s Kindergarten French Immersion class are busy learning their French song
for the Christmas concert. They were very excited to wear their moustaches on
Thursday.
Mrs.
Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is excited that their plants have started
to grow. They have tomatoes, peas and basil. They made moustaches for Movember
to wear on Thursday. The class would like to wish Katie McCarthy a happy
birthday!
Mrs.
George’s grade one English class read a beautiful story this week called “Stone
Soup” and made their very own delicious soup! They are learning about
volunteers in social studies. They were filled to have filled 84 boxes for
Operation Christmas Child this year. They would like to send a huge thank you
to everyone who helped make this possible. The star of the week is Kate
Lombard.
Mme.
Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has begun a new math unit on
subtraction. The students are learning about the five senses and are excited to
learn how their sense of hearing works.
Ms.
Park’s grade two English class has started a new unit in science. The students
are very excited to learn all about movement. They are reading the story “Mmm
Cookies” by Robert Munsch and baked some yummy cookies of their own. They are
also working on beautiful Christmas scenes in art.
Mme.
O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is pleased to see that their lettuce
is finally growing. It took eight days for the seeds to germinate in the green
house. They have begun a new unit on reindeer in preparation for Christmas. The
students are getting excited for Christmas as they have started practicing for
the Christmas concert.
Ms.
Rumbolt’s grade three and four class is working on painting snowmen using warm
and cool colours this week. The class enjoyed a pizza party on Wednesday to
celebrate meeting and beating their goal of collecting 50 cell phones. The
grade three students are looking forward to watching the TV commercials they
produced!
Mme.
Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class were very busy this
week. The grade three students learned about germination. They planted and
observed a bean coming up out of the soil. Did you know that there is a tiny
plant in a bean? The grade four students read about Braille’s alphabet and
Louis Braille. He was a blind man who created an alphabet that blind people
could read. Louis Braille changed the lives of many people who wanted to read
and learn.
Mrs.
McCarthy’s grade five and six class were writing Remembrance Day essays this
week. They are all looking forward to seeing everyone at the Tree Trimming
Social on Sunday. The students were busy planning the different activities for
this event.
Mr.
Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is hosting a Drop and Shop
Fundraiser on Saturday. The students are one week away from their big trip to
St. John’s!
