On Monday our school hosted our first ever Chess Theme Day. To celebrate students dressed in black and white and created chess themed costumes. There was face painting at lunch time and chess activities in class. The winners in the costume contest were: Junior kindergarten: Cohen Hartley, Nate Smallwood, Lexi Wight and Zoe McCarthy; Kindergarten: Molly MacDonnell and Carrie Hoskins; grade one: Ethan Lahey and Joel Lyver; grade two: Logan McCarthy and Rotém Phillips- Grobbelaar; grade three: Lily Smallwood; grade four Noah Evans and Jacob Blackwood; grade five and six: Rebecca Janes; junior and senior high: Makenzy Bishop and Anna MacKenzie. The overall school winners were Carrie Hoskins, Joel Lyver, Jacob Blackwood and Makenzy Bishop.

Ashley Buckle, a student recruitment officer from Memorial University, visited our school to give a presentation to senior high students about attending Memorial University, Grenfell Campus, and the Marine Institute.
Tuesday was another exciting day. To celebrate Valentine’s Day we had smoothies in the breakfast program, Valentine’s Day class parties, flowers and singing telegrams!
The grade four students completed their cross country skiing program this week at Blow Me Down Ski Park. They really enjoyed their skiing lessons and would like to thank their instructors and staff of Blow Me Down!

Our school is participating in the Canada Day Activity Challenge as part of the Canada 150 celebrations.
This week we welcome Brittany Burden, a student from the College of the North Atlantic, to our school. Brittany is doing her work placement in our Junior Kindergarten Program.
Our Grade Six Girls’ Basketball Team is playing in the Western Region Provincial Competition this weekend at C.C. Loughlin. We wish the team the best of luck!
Stars of the Week
Congratulations are extended to Rebecca Janes, Rotém Phillips-Grobbelaar, Leah Lainey and Ella Rashleigh who participated in the provincial Star Skate Figure Skating Competition this past weekend. Ella won gold, Leah, Rotém and Rebecca won silver.
Congratulations to Kate Murphy who had a great showing at the Marble Cup this past weekend.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes celebrated Valentine’s Day with a party and treats. They are learning about Arctic animals and hibernation.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is beginning addition in math. They enjoyed the chess theme day and Valentine’s Day this week. They are working on the letter “L” in language arts.
Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is very excited to be learning about simple addition. The children also discovered some words and sentences related to Valentine’s Day: Armour- Saint Valentine – Je t’aime.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class had fun celebrating Valentine’s Day! They started an art project with Ms. Jane Reagh, a local artist, called “I Am Awesome”. The class is loving the project.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class really enjoyed their Valentine’s Day activities this week. They made Canadian Flags in art class in honour of National Flag Day on Wednesday. They also planted tomato seeds in their classroom garden. They are looking forward to starting their ArtSmarts project today.
Ms. Kane’s grade two English class really enjoyed their project with Ms. Jane Reagh on Wednesday afternoon. The class is also finishing their unit on the Chinese New Year this week with a class parade and releasing paper lanterns with their wishes for the New Year into the sky.
Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class really enjoyed taking part in chess day on Monday. The class learned all about the chess moves and played a game of chess in class. On Valentine’s Day they did themed centres and French Valentine Mad Libs.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class lead the school singing our national anthem in French and English in chapel on Wednesday morning as part of National Flag Day celebrations.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is reading “Pippi Longstocking” in language arts. Pippi loves to wear socks and do silly things. As part of their novel study they decorated their own longstockings with things that make them happy. Afterwards they hung their socks in the classroom.
Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class celebrated their 100th day at school on Friday by writing about what life will be like in 100 years. They conducted an experiment in science with light to create rainbows using coloured light bulbs. They enjoyed the Chess Spirit Day immensely and had their faces painted by their very own artist, Jacob Cull. The award for the best dressed chess costume was won by Jacob Blackwood who created a chess board out of weaving black and white cardboard. They created handprint trees with hearts as leaves for Valentine's Day and made their own Valentine's mailboxes.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a fun filled week! The students enjoyed our two theme days. For Valentine ’s Day they made luminaries out of recycled glass jars and scraps of tissue paper. The grade five students have completed their novel study on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The grade six students are learning about text features and enjoyed a text feature scavenger hunt on Thursday.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class is completing a sporting competition in gym class. They are competing in a variety of different sport challenges. The group is looking forward to the bridge building competition on March 4.

The regional chess tournament is being held this Sunday at St. Gerard’s School.
School is closed on Monday for Corner Brook Winter Carnival!
Saturday, February 25th is the annual Scripps Spelling Bee hosted by the Telegram in St. John’s, NL.
