Lion’s Roar

Immaculate Heart of Mary School was proud to host the Provincial Chess Tournament over the weekend. We had 15 competitors from our school take part in the provincial competition! This was the highest participation from a single school! We would like to thank all the parents, teachers and volunteers who helped to make this event so very successful! We would like to especially thank our team coaches Mrs. Katie Passmoo, Mrs. Cheryl Cull, and to Dr. José Lam for their commitment to the team and hosting the Provincial Tournament. 
We would like to congratulate our students who participated in the Provincial Chess Tournament. They include: kindergarten student Grayson Roberts; grade two students Uriah Cull, Liam Gaulton, Mark Janes and Jack Watton; grade three students James Lao and Alister MacDonnell; grade four students Noah Colbourne, Jacob Cull, Candance Johannsen, and Gabriel Rowsell; grade five student Kira McCarthy; grade six students Jacob Bursey and Max Pittman; and grade 8 student Max Chrappa. Congratulations to Grayson Roberts who received first place provincially in kindergarten; Alister MacDonnell who received third place provincially in grade three; Jacob Cull who tied for third place provincially in grade four; and Jacob Bursey and Max Pittman who tied for third place provincially in grade six.

On Thursday morning our school hosted a NET Ministries session with grades four to Level III. The students talked about their experiences, faith, and led the students in engaging activities and discussion. 
Tuesday was National Poetry Day. Since school was closed on Tuesday, we celebrated in our classrooms with special poetry activities on Wednesday. Lauren Greene from Mrs. George’s class read a poem in chapel called “Penguins Everywhere”. 
IHMS was a sea of blue on Wednesday for National Water Day. This is a day we celebrated to keep in mind the value of water and all life that depends on clean and safe water. 
March is Nutrition month. The public health nurse is visiting our school today at lunch making healthy smoothies for students. Yum!
We are also celebrating Earth Hour today in our classes. 
Apple-A-Day Tickets are on sale! Tickets are $20 each. The tickets include six days of prizes including: an apple TV; 16 GB iPod Touch and $25 iTunes Gift Card; Apple Watch 38 mm; 9.7 inch iPad Pro; Apple Watch and iPad Mini 2; and 13 inch MacBook Air. The draws will begin on April 6.
During our morning chapel we are now proud to announce we are singing “Happy Birthday” in six languages!

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Samuel Antoncich’s Atom C Hockey Team who won a silver medal at the Botwood Invitational this past weekend. Samuel was awarded the White Hat Award for the hardest worker for one of the games. 
Congratulations to Danyeal Jacob’s hockey team who received a medal at the David Lavallee Invitational in Stephenville over the weekend. 

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are talking about the season of spring and what it means. For national water day they talked about the importance of water in their daily lives and Earth Hour on Friday. They would like to welcome Early Childhood Education students, Julie Curtis and Heather Nichol to their classes. 
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about how water is used and how it is important to our daily lives. They are discussing spring and how animals come out of hibernation.  
Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class have been enjoying the fresh air this week. The students also learned about the importance of water in our daily lives. 
Mrs. George’s grade one English class has started their Penguin unit this week! They celebrated World Poetry Day and particularly enjoyed the hilarious poems of Dennis Lee. On World Water Day, they learned about conserving water, keeping it clean and about the water cycle. They want to wish Faith a Happy Birthday!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is working on skip counting by 2's and 5's. The children have been working on this skill in centers and in pairs using various manipulatives. They have been discussing marine habitats and the other creatures on our planet that are dependent on clean water sources. 
Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is exploring strange fish that live in deep seas. They are also looking at the impact of global warming on these animals and why it is important to protect our oceans and the planet. 
Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class has been studying solids and liquids in science. They did a liquid to solid experiment and made ice cream. It was a delicious science experiment. In French they have started learning new spring words.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class enjoyed poetry and water celebrations on Tuesday. The students are beginning to work on their Heritage Fair ideas and beginning speech writing for the Elementary Speak Off. 
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has just begun their science unit on invisible forces. They have been investigating various materials to see what types attract to magnets. They are having a lot of fun playing with the magnets. They have started their measurement unit in math and are developing an understanding of reading an analog clock. 
Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class celebrated National Poetry Day by reading Roald Dahl’s poem “Crocodile”. They then created their own poems using rhyming couplets. The class also prepared oral reports on favourite explorers to present to their classmates. The class welcomes Ava Spearing, a new grade four student, to their classroom this week.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class has begun new novel studies in language arts. The grade six students are reading “Holes” and the grade five students are reading “Number the Stars”. To celebrate National Poetry Day they wrote their own versions of “I Cannot Go to School Today” by Shel Silverstein and “I Can’t Write a Poem” by Bruce Lansky.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class is preparing for the upcoming drama festival. The students are also gearing up for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge and Underwater Robotics. 

Coming Up


The Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival is taking place next week. All of our students from JK-Level III will be participating in their respective categories. The grade 5 -Level III students will participate in band.
