Students and staff enjoyed a long weekend in honour of Remembrance Day and the fall school break. School resumed for all classes on Tuesday.
The grade two and grade five and six classes had their class pizza parties on Tuesday. Members from the Corner Brook Fire Department brought pizza and juice to the classes as part of the prize for the Fire Prevention Week poster and slogan contest. Lauren Green was the Primary Poster Contest Winner, and Candance Johannesen was the winner of the Elementary Slogan Contest.
The grade six to Level III students completed their leaf raking fundraiser on Tuesday of this week. The students raked a total of 18 properties over three days. They would like to thank our IHMS families and community for making this fundraiser a success.
IHMS hosted the annual in class spelling bee for students in grades 4, 5, and 6 this week. The grade four classroom winners were Israela Ngania, Ava Hodder, and Lily Smallwood. The grade five class winners were Charlotte Mercier, Erica Kennedy, and Molly George. The grade six class winners were Isabelle Mercier, Rebecca Janes, and Reyd Ward. Congratulations to all the students on their hard work in preparing for the spelling bee! The classroom winners will begin studying a new word list in preparation for the school bee in December.
We would like to send our condolences to the King family on the passing of Mabel Dunphy this week.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes welcomed three Early Childhood Education students to their classrooms this week. Courtney Pike, Carrie Snooks, and Mallory Wheeler will be completing their work placement at IHMS until December 20. The students are exploring science concepts with fun experiments this week.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about emotions and responses in health. They planted their Little Green Thumbs Garden this week.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a wonderful trip to the Fire Station yesterday. They are learning about parables in religion class and preparing the boxes for Operation Christmas Child.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is learning a new song for the Christmas concert. They have been discussing how they make decisions and how groups of people can make decisions together.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is continuing with numbers up to 100 in math. They are finishing up their unit on air and water in science.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class completed Remembrance Day essays and posters this week. The grade three and four students are focusing on guided reading in French and the grade five and six students are working on present tense verbs.
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has started to learn about data collection. They are going to be collecting data about Christmas for their final project.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class was excited to take part in the Scripps Spelling Bee this week. Some of the students spelled up to 100 words!
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is getting ready to start their LEGO Simple and powered Mechanisms Project. The students wrote a class slogan for the Winter Carnival.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class participated in the Scripps Spelling Bee this week. The students are writing speeches for the YMCA Peace Week Speak Off.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is working on a unit on fractions. The grade seven students have started basketball tryouts.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class had another leaf raking fundraiser last Friday and this Tuesday afternoon. The Science 1206 students are learning about the periodic table of elements.
Coming Up
Monday is Mickey Mouse’s birthday. We will celebrate with a Disney theme casual day.
Our annual Christmas concert is November 30, at 7:00 pm in the school gymnasium.
The grade six to Level 3 students will leave for the Intermediate Skills Challenge on Thursday, November 23, 2017.
