Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (2/3/18)

This Monday we held our Term 1 Assembly to honour perfect attendance, perfect spelling, excellence in spelling, most improved readers, as well as honours and distinction certificates for grade seven to level 3.
Students and staff wore pink t-shirts on Wednesday to celebrate Pink T-shirt day to support anti-bullying campaigns.
The annual Elementary School Speak Off was held in our school on Wednesday evening. Judges for the event included: Ms. Stephanie Howell, Mrs. Paula Gruditch, and Mrs. Kim Samson. Participants included: Luke Coleman, Ava Hodder, CarlyRae Mouland, Alister MacDonnell, and Lily Smallwood, in grade four; Molly George, Gabriel Rowsell, Brooke Watton, in grade five; and Rebecca Janes, and Reyd Ward in grade six. The overall winner was Brooke Watton.
We would like to congratulate the winners in the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee hosted by our school last Thursday night. The grade four winner was Ryder Burden from J.J. Curling, the grade five winner was Katherine Noel from IHMS, and the grade 6 winner was Matthew Birmingham from J.J. Curling. We would like to thank our judges Mrs. Sandee Harnum from the Corner Brook Public Library and Mr. Chris Banks from K-Rock and Steele Communications. Katherine was interviewed by CBC Radio about the Winter Carnival Spelling Bee the following day.
Congratulations to Erica Kennedy and Israela Ngania who participated in the annual Telegram Scripps Spelling Bee last weekend in St. John’s. The girls competed against 73 other students from across the province.
We would like to congratulate Teresa Coleman, May Jay Cull, and Trinity Rouse who were winners in the Say Yes to Friendship Poster Contest.
This week was teacher appreciation week at IHMS. The teachers would like to thank the students, parents, and board members for the special treats and lunches provided this week!
We would like to wish Sylvia Phillips a wonderful birthday on Saturday. Ms. Phillips volunteers in many activities in our school. On Wednesday our school community sang her Happy Birthday and presented her with cards made by the students.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Lysea Nging who received a certificate from Tae Kwon Do for her Awesome Side Kick.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are discovering new Arctic animals and hibernation. They are enjoying the snow this week.
Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning how to make and read graphs. In science they are learning how machines help them in their lives. For Pink T-Shirt Day they learned about the importance of being a buddy, not a bully.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about being a bucket filler: a kind, caring person. They are filling their buckers with sweet notes to each other.
Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is finishing up their winter sports unit. They really enjoyed the pink t-shirt day on Wednesday. It was a day that inspired some great discussion on acts of friendship.
Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is enjoying the snow this week. They are finishing their unit in science on movement and are very excited about their next chapter on “matter”.
Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is beginning a new unit focusing on French homonyms. They are excited to be returning to the SPCA for their shelter buddies community reading program.  
Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is continuing their novel study on “The Good Dog”. They are beginning their math unit on division.
Ms. Guy’s grade four class is sad to finish their ski lessons this week because they enjoyed it so much.  They are writing their own pourqoi tales in language arts this week.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is learning about feudalism in social studies. In language arts they finished reading their story about Rapunzel.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is learning about cheetah’s in language class. They have adopted a class cheetah they are calling Blake Cottontail.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is working on a sales tax assignment in math. The annual National Geoscience and Engineering Month Bridge Competition is this Saturday at the Corner Brook Plaza.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is continuing their model bridges this week. The class has started their language arts units on Shakespeare. Earth Systems 3209 is learning about the rock cycle.
Coming Up
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition will be held on March 7th at 7 pm in our school gym.

Our school is hosting a Breakfast Program Blitz on March 8. We are asking each family to bring in one item to donate to the program.
