We would like to welcome everyone back from Christmas holidays and wish you a happy New Year!
Before the Christmas holidays, our school was buzzing with activities. Our Student Leadership Council organized the Stockings for Seniors, Fire Fighters’ Toy Drive, and Food Drive. Carter Bromley and Gabriel Rowsell represented our school with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary to collect items from around our city for the Food Bank. We would like to thank our students and families for their generous contributions to these initiatives.
On the last day of school we celebrated with a school wide pancake breakfast in the morning and a school variety show in the afternoon. The talent of our students and staff is astounding!!
Mrs. Coleman and members of the prayer group were involved in the annual Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve in our school gymnasium.
This week we are back to school and settling in to our routines.
Father Roche visited IHMS to celebrate Mass with our grade 4-6 students and visit classes to perform a variety of magic tricks. It was mystifying!
On Wednesday afternoon we held an Intermediate Skills Challenge Showcase for our students and families. This was an opportunity for our grade 6-9 students show the projects and demonstrate some of the things they learned in preparation for the competition they attended in November. It was also to recognize the many successes of our students.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Mark Janes who received a silver medal in an Atom A hockey tournament last weekend. Congratulations to Luke Coleman who received a silver medal in an Atom B hockey tournament.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes welcomed a new student this week. Welcome to Abby Olmstead! They are exploring winter activities this week.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is making New Year’s resolutions and learning new letters and words every week. This week’s word is “like”. They would like to welcome Everett Lyon to their class!
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is busy making New Year’s crafts and writing their resolutions. They are doing subtraction stories in math. They would like to wish a happy New Year to all our readers!
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is happy to return to school and see all of their friends. They have been working on presentation for a show and tell activity. They have been discussing and learning about heritage buildings and sites. They are very interested in the age of these buildings, which has prompted some spontaneous math equations!
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is working on phonics, addition and subtraction this week. They are learning about gasses in science class.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class is excited to welcome some visiting French students from St. Pierre during the first week of February. In French language arts they are planning a special project to welcome them to our school and city. The grade four and five students are beginning a new unit in math. The grade six students will have a unit test next week.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class really enjoyed performing their “Mission Impossible” skit for the school at the Christmas variety show before the school holiday. Everyone did a terrific job. In math they are continuing their addition and subtraction strategies.
Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is very excited to prepare for the Scripps School Spelling Bee next week. They are preparing to plant in their aquaponics garden.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is continuing to work on STEM builds. In language arts, they are learning about labour unions and discussing reasons people may go on strike.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is happy to be back in school after the break. They took part in a Skills Challenge assembly and expo on Wednesday afternoon. They spoke in front of the whole school about their project ideas and demonstrated some of their robotics missions.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class has started a new unit in math on measurement. In science they are completing a unit about the heart.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class would like to wish everyone a happy New Year. They are now focusing their attention on preparing for the midterm exams later this month.
Coming Up
The grade four cross country ski program will begin on Tuesday. This program will continue for four weeks.
The IHMS Scripps Spelling Bee will be held in our school gymnasium on Wednesday at 1:00 pm.
