On Tuesday evening we held our 12th annual Elementary School Speak Off!

Last week Mr. Drew’s class gave a special presentation in chapel for World Catholic Education Day.

Last Friday the students and teachers played an intense game of indoor soccer to kick off the long weekend. The score was tied 2-2 when the end of day school bell rang. Thank you to Matthew Young for refereeing the game. The students and teachers played an excellent game and everyone had a lot of fun.

On Tuesday evening we held our 12th annual Elementary School Speak Off. Eight students represented the grades 4, 5, and 6 classes. In grade four:  Isaac Buckingham, Clare Coleman and Colin Spencer represented their class; in grade five:  Cole Dumaresque, Emily Murley and Aaron White represented their class; in grade six: William Bennett and Max Chrappa represented their class. We would like to thank our judges Mrs. Glenda Belbin, Ms. Stephanie Howell, and Ms. Paula Grudich for volunteering their time. The overall winner was Clare Coleman with her speech about facing her fears. Congratulations to all the speakers.

Also on Tuesday we dressed up for a theme day to raise money for the grade 6 to level 1 girls’ basketball team to travel to St. John’s for a tournament. Everyone dressed up wearing clothes to show their favourite activity. The team also hosted a hot dog sale on Wednesday.

The grade one and two French immersion classes are happy to report that they raised $211.10 at their bake sale last week! This means that they raised enough money for five children in Rwanda to go to school! Thank you to all our students and families for supporting this fundraiser.

On Wednesday, our school hosted the annual junior kindergarten, kindergarten and grade one orientation sessions in English and French Immersion. There were many new little faces visiting our school and some very excited new kindergarten and grade one students in our school!



Staples General Manager, Wendy Paul along with manager Rhonda Brothers and employee Jennifer Warren delivered our new technology equipment on Wednesday. We received $25,000 in new equipment for our classrooms. We have new ipads, new imac computers, a new projector, two Elmo digital cameras, a new school SLR camera and a new digital video camera.
 
The grade three and six English students began writing their provincial assessments on Thursday. The students will continue writing today, Monday and Tuesday. All students in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador will be writing these assessments at the same time. We wish all the students the best of luck.



CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten classes really enjoyed attending the kindergarten orientation on Wednesday. They spent a lot of time outside this week enjoying the spring weather.

Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning the sight word “c’est”. This week they are learning about watersheds and drawing a poster for the ACAP Humber Arm student art challenge. They are continuing their lessons on subtraction and addition in math.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class was excited to spend the afternoon in grade one with Mrs. George on Wednesday.  This week they are learning about the earth and the solar system in science. In math they are learning about length.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about living things in science class. They are learning about the Holy Spirit in religion. They are doing lots of practice for the upcoming musical. They would like to wish Kate Lombard a very happy 7th birthday!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about watersheds and how humans can ensure we are doing our best to protect them. The children are excited that their classroom butterfly kit will arrive today!

Ms. Park’s grade two English class is learning about the attributes of objects in math. They have learned about watersheds and created posters for the ACAP Humber Arm art contest. Brooke is the student of the week!

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is doing some poetry reading and writing of their own. The students are really enjoying being authors! They will be doing some class presentations of their work.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class has been practicing hard for the musical this week. The class would like to congratulate Colin, Isaac and Clare for being chosen to represent the class at the annual IHMS Elementary Speak Off on Tuesday evening.  The grade three students began their provincial assessments in language arts and will continue writing them on today and on Monday and Tuesday.

Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class had a busy week with science activities. The grade three students have finished their unit on invisible forces and are learning about soil. The grade four students are doing experiments about sound movement in air, water, and space.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is enjoying the spring weather this week. The students enjoyed playing a variety of sports outside during their gym classes, intramurals and lunch break. In addition to our playground equipment, we now have tether balls, soccer nets, soccer balls, basketball nets, basketballs, and footballs.  The class is busy preparing their recycled art piece for the art show coming up in June. They are still collecting plastic bottle caps!
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class has been busy this week completing units in language arts, math and science. They are less than one month away from final exams! The class has also been working in art on painting the background for the school’s upcoming musical

Summer Program for Our Junior Kindergarten Families

Dear Parents:


Our school will be offering a summer program to our Junior Kindergarten families. The program will begin on Monday, June 29th and will finish on Friday, August 29th.

The summer program will operate Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.  The cost of the nine week program is $1,575.00.  Parents will be responsible for providing snacks and lunches.  There will be no cafeteria service available.  A down payment of $250.00 is required by June 15th.  Space is limited to sixteen children.

The grade six girls’ soccer team played in tournament at Sacred Heart over the weekend. Thank you to Mr. Drew Nadon and Mr. Ryley Nadon for coaching the team.

The students and teachers who travelled to Québec last week had a wonderful trip visiting Québec City and Montréal.  They visited the Parliament building in Québec City, Parc de la Chute Montmorency, Sainte-Anne-Beaupré Basilica and Museum, the Artillery Park, Citadelle, Parc Aquarium due Québec and a Sugar Shack. They participated in a military activity at the National Battle Fields Commission and an interactive street theatre and took a boat tour. They also participated in town activities at the traditional Huron Site. In Montréal, they participated in a workshop at the Montreal Science Centre, visited the Rio Tinto Alcan Plantetarium and Exco Exhibit, and attended Space Camp.

The annual spring photo shoot took place at our school on Monday.

On Wednesday evening, Mrs. King, Mme. Ryan and Mrs. McCarthy attended the City of Corner Brook annual ACE awards. Our school nominated for the Environmental Award.

On Thursday we celebrated World Catholic Education Day. We are very grateful to be able to practice and celebrate our faith within our school community.

Today there is going to be a teachers vs students soccer game in the gym. Go lions, go!

Mr. Wayne Allen facilitated golf lessons to the kindergarten to level 1 gym classes on Monday and Thursday this week.

The grade six to level 1 girls’ basketball team is still practicing. They will travel to St. John’s at the end of the month for a tournament.
There is no school on Monday for the Victoria Day holiday. Have a happy and safe long weekend to all our readers!

CLASS NEWS
The junior kindergarten classes are talking about the letter “o” this week. They have started talking about different things they can do for the science fair. They celebrated World Catholic Education Day on Thursday.


Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class have been watching the growth of their sunflowers in the greenhouse. The students are taking very good care of them. They are learning all about healthy soil and the parts of a plant. The sunflower in French is called “tournesol”.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working on 3-D shapes in math. They are learning about timelines in social studies and weather in science.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has just started their last big project for the year called “Wonderful Me”. They are writing nice things about all of their friends and then turning them into books for each person to bring home. They had lots of fun predicting and carrying out more experiments for the upcoming science fair!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class along with Mme. O’Dell’s class is working on a project to raise money to send children to school in Africa. Yesterday they held a bake sale. There will be more fundraising events coming soon. The class is very excited to see so many flowers on their tomato plants. They also noticed some of their zucchini plants have germinated.

Ms. Park’s grade two English class is learning about geometry in math. They are making shapely critters in art to help them with their math. In science they are learning about how humans grow. As an activity they are making pita pizzas! This week in the greenhouse they have started to grow corn. The students are very excited to watch it grow!

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class is busy this week finishing their unit in math on measuring. They will be beginning the subtraction of two digit numbers next week. The greenhouse plants are growing really fast now. They have planted tomatoes, zucchini, garlic, lettuce and peppers.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class is looking forward to the long weekend. The grade three students have started to learn division math and the grade fours are learning about division with remainders. They are tricky. They have almost completed their hot air balloons in art class.

Mme. Lachance’s grade three and four French Immersion class is glad to be all back together. Some of the students in the class spent a week with the English students in Ms. Horner’s classroom. This week the students did a lot of work on grammar and math. They are also busy working on their science fair projects. The science fair is at the end of this month. The new recycle box is in the main lobby. It will be used for bread tags, ink cartridges, batteries, cell phones and markers.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is looking forward to the Elementary Speak off on Tuesday evening. The class has been busy working on their plastic bottle cap recycled art project. The class is still collecting plastic bottle caps. They hope to display their completed art project at our annual art show in June.
 
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class is finishing up their projects for the Hot Shots Contest sponsored by Newfoundland Light and Power. The grade seven and eight students are working on Public Service Announcements in language arts class. The grade nine and Level 1 students are learning about Newfoundland poet and playwright, Al Pittman

Hajra Ahmad, left, and Colin Spencer, right, both received medals at the Western Region Heritage Fair for their projects. The top twenty projets at the fair received medals. Hajra also received a $50 scholarship from the Canadian Cancer Society for her project on the Sir Wilfred Grenfell.

Last weekend we had eight students participate in the Regional Heritage Fair held at Corner Brook Intermediate. Congratulations to Amna Ahmad, Hajra Ahmad, Isaac Buckingham, Max Chrappa, Clare Coleman, Arabella LeBlanc, Lucas Neville, and Colin Spencer who presented their projects on Saturday. Hajra Ahmad and Colin Spencer received medals for being ranked in the top twenty projects. Hajra Ahmad also won a $50 scholarship from the Canadian Cancer Society for her presentation on Sir Wilfred Grenfell.

Mr. Hancock and Mr. Drew Nadon travelled to St John’s with Nathan Anderson, Douglas MacKenzie, Ryan Miller, Cameron Peddle and Maria Reynolds for the Underwater Robotics Competition. This was the school’s first year being involved in this competition. A good time was had by all students.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one class along with Mme. O’Dell’s grade two class is raising money for children to go to school in Haiti. Did you know it only costs $40 a year for a child to go to school? Many families cannot afford this. The class is hosting a bake sale next Thursday to kick start their fundraising.

The grade six girls’ indoor soccer team is participating in a tournament this weekend.

The grade six class has officially completed their DARE program with Constable Mosher and will have their graduation in June.

Max Chrappa represented the grade six students at a mock City Council Meeting on Wednesday evening for Municipal Awareness Week.  Max was chosen to be a city councillor and sat in a council chair for the meeting.
Mrs. King, Mme. Lachance and the students and parents on the Québec trip are arriving back in Corner Brook today. A great trip was had by all.
STARS OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to Ivor Cook who won a medal in a Tae Kwon Do tournament this past weekend.

Congratulations to Carter Bromley, Luke Coleman, Noah Colbourne, Noah Evans, Kate Lombard, Saleem Obeid, Ella Rashleigh, and Theo Thorne who received medals at the annual end of seas hockey banquet.
Congratulations to Theo Thorne who also received medals from Timbit Soccer and a Timbit hockey tournament in Deer Lake.

 

CLASS NEWS

The junior kindergarten children enjoyed talking about Mother’s Day and the special things they will do for their moms this weekend. They also talked about May being the month of Mary.

Mme. Brett’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is transplanting their sunflower and bean seeds in the greenhouse. They are having so much fun watching them grow. They will begin measuring the growth of their plants next week.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class really enjoyed watching the national Ballet “YouDance” Live stream from Toronto. They are very excited to announce that their new classroom SMARTboard has arrived! They would like to wish all their moms a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class was very busy with Mother’s Day projects this week. They also started some science fair projects for the science fair later this month. One of the wonderful  moms surprised the class with a pizza party yesterday! Even though her identity is a secret, the class would like to send her a big thank you!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion are in the planning stages of a fundraising project. They are working to raise money to send children to school for a year in Africa.  They painted birds in the sunset working with warm and cool colours. They are also working on Mother’s Day projects.

Ms. Park’s grade two English class is learning about habitats and where animals live. The students are making special things for Mother’s Day. They would like to wish a happy Mother’s Day to all of their wonderful moms and all the other moms reading The Western Star. The star of the week is Meredith.

Mme. O’Dell’s grade two French Immersion class was busy working on special Mother's Day projects this week. They are also learning about the environment and Native peoples way of life.

Ms. Horner’s grade three and four class has three visitors from Mme. Lachance’s class this week. Brandon Brake, Isabelle Mercier, and Lucas Neville are taking classes with the English grade three and four students this week. The class also has another new addition, a fish named Skippy Lou. In language class the grade three’s have been learning to write an essay. The grade four students have been busy writing speeches for the upcoming Elementary Speak Off. The class is also working on a top secret Mother’s Day surprise.

Mme. Lachance is gone to Québec City with some of her students this week. The students will return to Corner Brook on Friday after a wonderful week of French experiences.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class has started their plastic bottle cap art project using two pieces of heavy recycled cardboard. They are hoping to display this project at our end of year Art Show. The grade five and six students have also been very busy writing speeches for the Elementary Speak Off. Makenzy Bishop, Emma Doman and Paige Walsh are gone to Quebec on the school trip. William Bennett, Max Chrappa, Samuel Michael, and Jordan Park participated in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge yesterday.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high and level 1 class had an excellent time at the Underwater Robotics Competition this past weekend in St. John’s. Cameron Peddle and Ryan Miller took part in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge on Thursday at Grenfell Campus. The class would like to welcome Emily O’Bryan to their class this week.
