Grade 5/6 News Article-Lion's Roar (9/29/17)

IHMS hosted the annual school Terry Fox Walk on Monday at 11:30. The whole school took part. We would like to thank Mrs. George for presenting live from the school media centre to talk about Terry Fox and his amazing story.

Our cross country running team participated in the first race of the season Wednesday hosted by J.J. Curling School. The team was represented by 17 students from grades four to six. We would like to congratulate the entire team on an excellent race. Congratulations to Carter Bromley who won first place in the grade five boys’ race.

The grade 5 and 6 English and French Immersion students attended a field trip for National Forestry Week at Margaret Bowater Park on Wednesday. The students learned about the forestry industry in Newfoundland and Labrador, tree identification, wildlife safety, insects, and silviculture. Mme. Moss won a roll of paper donated by Kruger for her class.

We celebrated National Tree Day on Thursday with a variety of activities. All classes made leaves to place on a large tree in our lobby. Students wore fall theme colours and participated in fall planting in the greenhouse.

Our annual Curriculum Night for parents was held on Thursday evening. Parents had the opportunity to see a presentation from our school public health nurse Lynette Christopher followed by a meet and greet with teachers about their child’s curriculum and resource books.

Student Leadership Council elections were held on Thursday for the positions of Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary, and Primary Representative. Class representatives will be elected next week. Stay tuned for an announcement on the full SLC team for 2017-2018.

We are collecting non-perishable food items for the Food Bank’s annual Thanksgiving Day Food Drive.

Today is medical theme day at IHMS. The halls are filled with doctors, nurses, vets, and patients! We are raising money to donate to the Western Regional Memorial Hospital Foundation’s annual Radiothon.

Vegetable Orders are due at the office today.

Media centre helpers this week are: Israela Ngania, Candace Johannesen, Anna MacKenzie, and Madison Noel.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about fall and doing fall activities. They were excited to take part in the Terry Fox Walk on Monday.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about fall. They are continuing to work with numbers one to ten. The students are very excited today for medical theme day.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about the weather in science class. They are making good character booklets in health class. Carrie is the star of the week!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is learning about the signs of the changing seasons and its effect on nature. They are working on increasing patterns. They discussed how their first teachers are their family.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is working on increasing patterns in math. They have started to learn about air and water in science. They even made their own wind spirals.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is excited to celebrate medical theme day today in aid of the Western Regional Memorial Hospital Foundation. The grade three and four students are continuing to learn about types of plants and their needs in science. The grade five and six students are studying ancient civilizations.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has been working very hard this week on their foster families essays for Foster Family Association Month in Newfoundland and Labrador. The grade three’s have produced some very heartfelt pieces.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class is very excited to create their own habitats in science class this week. The students have completed their very first essays for the year.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class has been working very hard on board games focused on the various body systems. The class really enjoyed their field trip on Wednesday to the park for National Forestry Week.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class has completed writing their science experiment “Which candy is the most sour?” The results are in and the winner is the Sour Cherry Gummies! The majority of the students rated the candy as moderately sour.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class participated in the Student Leadership Council elections this week. The voting took place on Thursday. Stay tuned for the results next week!

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class enjoyed their trip to Mrs. King’s cabin last week. The students participated in the Student Leadership Council elections this week. The career students have begun collecting their volunteering hours. Some students are volunteering in the breakfast program and after school program.

Coming Up

The second cross country running meet will take place on October 4, at C.C. Loughlin.

Our annual Thanksgiving Day dinner will take place on Friday, October 6.

We celebrated Immaculate Heart of Mary School’s 18th birthday on Monday with a school theme day, assembly and birthday cake! All the classes took part in the celebration by performing songs, presenting poems or interesting facts, and creating videos. We would like to thank Colemans for donating the delicious cakes for the celebration.

Our regular afterschool program activities began this week! It certainly was busy with many new and returning activities. Some of the new activities this year are Latin, dance, and yoga.

Basketball skills development sessions began this week for boys and girls in grades three to six. These sessions build on skills the students will learn during our regular basketball season.

The grade seven to Level Three students had a field trip to Mrs. King’s cabin on Thursday. The students enjoy lunch, boating, and water activities in Bonne Bay. We would like to thank Buckle’s Busing, Mr. Sean King and Mrs. King for their generosity for this field trip.

Nursing students from Western Memorial Hospital visited our school on Wednesday. They will be doing presentations on October 3rd  in three of our classes: Mrs. Hodder’s kindergarten class, Ms. Cunning’s grade two class and Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class.

Congratulations to Molly George who ran the Corner Brook Running Club’s Annual Terry Fox 5 km run. Molly trained over the summer for the race with the Girls’ Run Club.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about apples. They are doing apple experiments and taste testing. They would like to thank the parents who donated items for their playground project and the Greenwood Inn for their donation.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning to print numbers one to ten. They are also learning the French names for numbers one to ten. In social studies and health they are learning that everyone is unique and special.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is becoming pattern experts in math. In science they are learning about the sun. They had their first spelling test and everyone did great! They would like to wish a happy 6th birthday to Molly.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is working on patterning in math and comparing schools of the past to schools of today. In art they made an apple project after learning about the artist Kandinsky and his painting on concentric circles.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is learning about short and long vowels in language arts. They are continuing patterns in math, as well as becoming spelling wizards! There is always something exciting happening in grade two!

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class have been very busy this week! The grade three and four students are exploring parts of speech by beginning with nouns and their determinants. In science they are studying plants. The grade five and six students are starting to  build their reading stamina. In science they are studying the respiratory system and learning how to round seven digit numbers to various positions.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is learning about the components of soil in science. They will be investigating some samples of soil.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class is learning about habitats in science. They went outside and found lots of bugs living under a piece of wood by the greenhouse.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is making digestive system board games in science. In language arts they have begun working on the daily five literacy activities.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is excited about their forestry field trip next week. They are learning about science experiments this week and have conducted their own test called “Which candy is the most sour?” Stay tuned for the results next week.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class enjoyed their field trip to Mrs. King’s cabin on Thursday. The students presented a short film they made about the day in the life of a junior high student at IHMS at our school birthday celebration. They created a special song called “Junior Highaire” to the tune of “The Fresh Prince of Bell Air”.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is writing essays for Foster Families Association Month. The class really enjoyed their field trip to Mrs. King’s cabin at Bonne Bay Pond on Thursday.

Coming Up

Our annual school Terry Fox Walk will take place on Monday.

The Running Club will participate in their first race next week. It will be at J.J. Curling on Wednesday afternoon.

National Tree day is September 27. We will celebrate with a special fall theme day.

Grade 5/6 News Article-Lion's Roar (9/14/17)

IHMS would like to welcome everyone to another school year at IHMS. This year we are celebrating our 18th anniversary.

Once again we have had a busy start back to school. Early in the first week we welcomed thirteen Brazilian exchange students who will be with us for the first half of the year. We would like to give a special welcome to new students and staff members to our school. New teachers to our school include Ms. Caitlyn Simms, Junior kindergarten, Ms. Heather Cunning, grade two, Ms. Gina Guy, grade four, Ms. Dianna Alteen, school band, and Mrs. Jennifer Beynon-Martinec, school choirs. We would like to extend best wishes to Mrs. Barbara Dicks during her leave of absence.

Our school opened on Wednesday, September 6 with a school wide assembly. The cross country running team has begun practicing for the first race of the season and basketball skills development will be starting soon. The chess club met this week to kick off another great year of chess.

The Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program began operating this week.

On Wednesday of this week the grade seven to level three students were visited by Molly Conway-Bayliss and Joe Gunby, youth ministry representatives from England, who were visiting our diocese this week. The students led an icebreaker activity and period of quiet prayer and reflection in the school chapel.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning all about each other and the classroom routine. They are having a lot of fun!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is very excited to be at school. They are learning new routines and having fun with new friends.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is super excited to be back in school. They are learning about friendship and apples. They are having their apple test today! Yum!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one and two French Immersion class is very excited to be back for another school year. The students are enjoying reviewing their French vocabulary and learning new school routines.

Ms. Cunning’s grade two English class is learning about patterns in math, all about change in social studies, and is very curious about science. They are enjoying “book shopping” and reading with a partner.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is doing an in depth introduction to the daily 5 literacy activities. In their new pilot French enrichments program they are learning about managing mental health through meditation, muscle relaxation, and breathing techniques.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has started to look at multiplication by looking at equal groups, repeated addition, and arrays.

Ms. Guy’s grade four class has become explorers in science and social studies. They are self-monitoring in language arts and finding patterns in math.

Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is learning about meeting basic needs and maintaining healthy body unit in science. They are reading about being genies in language arts.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is working on building their reading stamina and learning about the tree of life. They are busy planning their performance in the IHMS birthday celebration for next week.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class has started algebra units in math. Students have been working on ecosystems in science.

Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class welcomed their newest group of Brazilian exchange students. They are looking forward to their trip to Mrs. King’s cabin at Bonne Bay Pond.

Coming Up

We are celebrating IHMS’ 18th birthday on Monday! We will celebrate with a theme day and special class presentations in the gym.

National Tree Day is September 21. We will have a fall theme day and make a special display in the main lobby.

Our school’s annual Science Fair was another great success last Friday afternoon. All classes displayed projects with the grade four to nine students presenting individual projects. Our judges selected Samuel Antoncich, Simon Boitsefski, Max Chrappa, Clare Coleman, Keira Clarke, Noah Evans, Molly George, Carly Johannesen, Tyler McGinn, Anna MacKenzie and Daniel Olvera to receive medals for their projects. Congratulations to Clare Coleman who also received an Agricultural Award for having the best overall agricultural project. We would like to thank our judges Mr. Cecil Lake, Mr. Wayne Spencer, Mrs. Doreen Churchill, and Mme. Louise Goosney for their support of our event.

Last Sunday morning many of our grade one and two students celebrated their first Holy Communion. We would like to congratulate Isaiah Coleman, Noah Conté, Liam Couture, Jacob Cull, Uriah Cull, Rotém Phillips-Grobbelaar, Meteghan Kane, Logan McCarthy, Robert Morrissey, Hala Parsons, Brooklynn Pittman, Jamie White-Robertson, Noah Wall, and Ryder Walsh on receiving the sacrament of Holy Communion for the very first time. Following the mass the students celebrated with their families at a small reception.  They would also like to thank Father Terry, Mrs. Jackie George, Mrs. Yvonne Coleman, and Mrs. Marjorie Deckert for their support during the preparation and celebration. 

This week our school was very busy preparing and performing in the musical production of “The Trials of Alice in Wonderland”. The production included all students in our school and a special guest appearance of Mr. Ian Locke. The musical was directed by Mrs. Lilana Bishop, Mme. Jessica Howlett, and Dr. Jennifer Matthews. We would like to thank Mr. Scott Reynolds, Dulux Paints, Mrs. Sylvia Phillips, Mrs. Michelle Pittman, Ms. Laura Edwards and Mrs. Jane Reagh for their support in making the show possible. Everyone had a great time and the performance was spectacular. 

On Thursday morning we held a special celebration to honour Hala Parsons who is the provincial winner in the World Ocean’s Day Primary Poster Contest. Hala was presented with her prize package during a school assembly.

Hala Parsons, a grade two student at Immaculate Heart of Mary School was the provincial winner in the World Ocean Day Primary Poster Contest. Hala is pictured here with her prize pack which included several books, games, a water bottle, a toy killer whale, and an adoption certificate for an endangered blue shark. World Ocean Day is celebrated annually on June 8.

We would like to congratulate Ella Rashleigh who was the winner in the ACAP Humber Arm Primary Poster Contest. Ella won a new bicycle provided by ACAP Humber Arm and a new helmet which was provided by NL Light & Power.

Stars of the Week

We would like to congratulate our students who performed in the Graham Academy’s productions “A Year with Frog and Toad” and “Jack and the Queen Stalk”. Simon Boitsefski, Grace Brake Higgins, Keira Clarke, Heather Cooper, Clare Coleman, Luke Coleman, Carly Johannesen, Candance Johannesen, Alister MacDonnell, Ella Rashleigh, and Lily Smallwood all performed in the year end production. Congratulations!

Congratulations to Rebecca Janes who is the recipient of the Most Dedicated Skater Award. This was awarded at the annual Silver Blades Skating Banquet. 

Congratulations to Jenna Cammie who passed some tests at the Figure Skating Test Day this past weekend. 

Congratulations to Lysea Ngania who received her yellow stripe belt in Tae Kwon Do this past week. 

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes really enjoyed being part of the school musical. The students were dressed up as flamingos for the show. They sang the Muppet theme song to open the show. The students are learning about Father’s Day and preparing special gifts. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had an excellent performance on Tuesday evening at the school musical. The students are preparing for the end of year art show. 

Hunter Olmstead, a kindergarten English student, spends some time visiting with some baby chicks in the school greenhouse this week. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class learned about flamingos this week. In science they are discovering that some snails and other species are not native to Newfoundland and Labrador. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning in science class about how people and animals grow. They finished their last math unit. They had a terrific time at the school musical this week. They would like to wish Bryant a very happy birthday today!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class enjoyed the musical on Tuesday evening. They are busy finishing off their units in math and science. The students are looking forward to summer vacation in a few weeks.

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is beginning a new unit in science on motion. They will be doing much exploration inside and outside the school. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class had a lot of fun participating in the musical. Everyone did a great job! They are starting to learn summer vocabulary and are getting excited for summer vacation. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is riding the energy and momentum from the musical into the last few weeks of school. They are diving right into a class project on measurement and are wrapping up their French unit by exploring and illustrating French idioms. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class had an eventful week preparing and performing the school musical. They tested and improved their drawing skills as they class drew and painted portraits of characters in the musical. The class embraced the challenge as these portraits were not easy to do.

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class is focusing on long division and adverbs this week. They really enjoyed the science fair on Friday and the musical on Tuesday evening. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class would like to congratulate the whole school on another awesome musical performance. The grade six students finished off their video challenge for the Plastic Grab Bag Challenge. The grade five students are reading the novel “Kensuke’s Kingdom”. All the students are looking forward to summer vacation!

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class was busy this week with the musical and preparing for the high school graduation and dance being held at our school this evening.  They would like to congratulate Arista White on her high school graduation this week!

Grade 5/6 News Article (25/05/2017)

The school photographer visited us on Wednesday to take class and group photos. These photos are used in our school yearbook. 

Wednesday afternoon we hosted a school orientation for new Junior Kindergarten students for September 2017. Our current students in junior kindergarten participated in sessions with the kindergarten English and French Immersion teachers, and our current kindergarten students visited the grade one English and French classrooms for an orientation session.

Thursday was World Catholic Education Day. Our classes celebrated this day with in class activities. The grade five and six students presented in chapel all the reasons why our school is special. 

On Wednesday evening we held our annual Junior High School Speak Off. Participating students included: Makenzy Bishop, Max Chrappa, Jack Richardson, Anna MacKenzie and Madison Noel. The overall winner was Jack Richardson. We would like to thank our judges for the event , Maruen Mennie and Stephanie Howell.

Students who travelled to St. Pierre had many wonderful experiences. They toured the lyceé (local high school), primary school, the boulangerie, and  the Museé (the museum). They also had a bus tour of the island, visited the cemetery, pâtrisserie (pastry shop), the City Hall and boutique. They had fun experiencing la joie de vive.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are planting in the greenhouse this week. They are learning about Father’s Day and preparing artwork for the end of year school art show. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is practicing for the Kindergarten graduation this Monday evening. The class harvested vegetables from their Little Green Thumbs Garden. They are learning about the importance of taking care of their pets. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class enjoyed listening and talking about stories from the Bible this week. The children shared their own bible with the class. In science, the class is talking about moss. The students were very excited to attend a grade one orientation session on Wednesday afternoon with Mme. Ryan.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is practicing experiments for the Science Fair next week. They have their very last spelling test today! They would like to wish Elizabeth a happy birthday!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been learning about living things and what they need to survive. This works well to incorporate with their greenhouse time. This week they are planting seeds they have collected from home.

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is learning about the life cycles. They have made a display outside their classroom showing the stages of life for a butterfly. They are excited to see what will happen with their butterfly experiment. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class is learning about the weather. The students are working on a class project for the upcoming school science fair. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class was very busy this week. The grade three and four have been preparing for their final in-class assignments. They are writing a script for their French restaurants. The grade five and six students are doing their final French project. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is excited to announce that their caterpillars have arrived. They placed them in their growing containers and are eagerly awaiting their spinning stage. The class had the privilege of going on an Erosion tour last week with ACAP Humber Arm. The students enjoyed the trip very much!

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class is taking a closer look at two digit multiplication in math. In social studies they are learning about how to read maps. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class presented a list of special things about IHMS in chapel on Thursday to celebrate Catholic Education Day. The grade five students are learning about sequencing in language arts. They have started a new read aloud novel called “Kensuke’s Kingdom”. The grade six  students are making a video for the Grab Bag Challenge. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class finished their ArtSmarts project this week with Jane Reagh.  Each student created a self portrait of themselves through investigation of their facial anatomy. The students are also starting to paint the background scenes for the upcoming school musical.

Grade 5/6 News Article - Lion’s Roar (17/05/2017)

Our students are busy preparing for our upcoming musical “The Trials of Alice in Wonderland”. Props are being created and painted, costumes are being made, and the halls are filled with singing!

Last weekend our school hosted a grade six boys’ indoor soccer tournament. All games were really close in the tournament. Our team lost in the semi-finals. Thank you to the student volunteers and coaches, Mr. Ryley Nadon and Mr. Drew Nadon , for all their hard work over the weekend. 

Last Thursday the grade seven to Level three girls attended a Skills Trade sponsored by Skills Canada at the College of the North Atlantic. Anna MacKenzie and Mikalya Moldlova were interviewed by NTV news.  The girls thoroughly enjoyed the activities in this conference. 

On Friday we continued our Mental Health Week Awareness with yoga and meditation. We would like to thank Nancy Buckle who facilitated yoga with the kindergarten to grade one classes and Sharon Evans who facilitated meditation with the grade two and three classes. It was a very mindful and relaxing afternoon. 

The students travelling on the French language trip to St. Pierre departed on Tuesday afternoon. They will tour various locations and sample foods while visiting the island. Mrs. King and Ms. Moss are the teacher chaperones for the trip. 

Our grade two class has collected over 4,000 plastic bags and counting for the Grab Bag Challenge! Please continue to collect plastic bags for our school and keep them out of our landfills.

The Student Leadership Council is collecting Cups for Cash for the City of Corner Brook. We are collecting used paper coffee cups. Each cup will earn us a return of five cents. 

The Provincial Boys’ Choir is finished for this school year. It will resume rehearsals in September. 

Congratulations to Hala Parsons who is a provincial winner in the World Ocean’s Day Poster Contest. World Ocean’s Day is celebrated on June 8^th. 

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Liam Brinston who received several awards for youth bowling at the end of season. His awards included: High Average, High Series, High Single, High Series Team, Playoffs, and a trophy for Most Improved. 

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are preparing for the upcoming school musical. The students will be dressed up as flamingos for the show. They are helping to make flower props for the show. They are learning about different insects this week. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about transportation in social studies. They visited the greenhouse to see if their seeds have sprouted. They are learning about erosion in science. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class enjoyed preparing a gift for Mother’s Day, planting flowers, and decorating a bag to put the plant in. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has started a project called “Wonderful Me” where they write nice things about their friends. They are enjoying their time in the greenhouse with the wonderful Ms. Galliot. They would like to wish everyone a happy Victoria Day weekend. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been learning about living things and what they need to survive. They are incorporating this into their greenhouse time. They are planting seeds they have collected from home. They will be planting some avocados next week.

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is writing to students at Beatrix Potter Elementary School in England to thank them for taking care of the graves of the Newfoundlanders who died in war and are buried across the street from their school. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class is practicing working with money in math. They are continuing to build on their addition and subtraction skills. They have started to develop more spring French vocabulary. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class has started their science fair projects. The grade three and four students are learning about habitats in science. The grade five and six students are doing some research on local history in social studies. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class planted vegetables, flowers, and herbs in the greenhouse. They are continuing to learn about habitats in science. They explored the causes of erosion and created artwork to illustrate its impact on aquatic environments. On Thursday they attended a field trip to learn about erosion and how it has affected parts of Corner Brook. 

Grade four students, Katerine Noel, Kate Murphy, Leah Lainey, and Molly George cleaned up the local park during their class erosion field trip with ACAP Humber Arm.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class made posters in art about erosion and how it affects aquatic life. The grade five students are making board games in math. The grade six students are writing crime reports in language arts. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class participated in a session with Allison Pittman from Youth Ventures about creating a summer business. The students are preparing for the upcoming Science Fair in our school.

Junior and senior high students participate in an art program with local artist Jane Reagh. The project called "Anatomy of Me" involves the students creating blind contour self portraits and investigating the parts of the nose, eye, ear, and tongue. Stars of the Week

Last Thursday our grade six to eight students participated in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge hosted at Grenfell Campus. Our team consisting of Mohamed Al-Zubaidy, Simon Boitsefski, Aaron White, and Max Chrappa received silver medals. A total of 18 teams from the western region participated in this event.

The grade nine to Level 3 students attended the MATE ROV Underwater Robotics Competition in St. John’s last weekend at the Marine Institute. The two teams performed exceptionally well. The UGS Inc. team consisting of Cheyenne Bursey, Madison Noel, Anna MacKenzie, and Arista White received an award for communication. The RCR Inc. team consisting of Rebekah Calbert, Ryan Miller, and Cameron Peddle was the first place team overall in the competition and received an award for manoeuvrability of their Remote Operation Vehicle (ROV).

Mark Janes, Uriah Cull and Ethan Hicks competed in an invitational chess tournament as a grade two team in St. John’s last weekend. The boys received bronze medals in the tournament. 

Our school was well represented at the Western Regional Heritage Fair over the weekend. Representatives of Immaculate Heart of Mary School included: Clare Coleman, Keira Clarke, Noah Evans, Molly George, Rebecca Janes, Carly Johannesen, Kate Murphy, Gabriel Rowsell, Reyd Ward, and Brooke Watton. Clare Coleman and Rebecca Janes received medals for having a top twenty project. Clare was also awarded a Young Citizens Award of which only three are awarded.

Mrs. George’s grade one class art project “Amazing Me” that was created earlier this year with artist Jane Reagh is on display as part of an artshow at the Arts and Culture Centre. Members of the class attended the opening reception on Sunday. The show will be on display until the end of May. 

On Sunday our school hosted the second annual Dog Show and More Show. The event was a huge success with a variety of animals participating and a BBQ that was enjoyed by all. We would like to thank pet owners, Mme. Moss, Dr. Angela Martyn of Animal Health Care Centre who judged the event and donated prizes.  Jacob Youden was the winner of the $50 gift card donated by Humber Valley Veterinary Clinic. 

Wednesday was Municipal Awareness Day in the City of Corner Brook. Our kindergarten to grade five students took part in a colouring contest, the grade six students wrote essays of what they would do as mayor, and the junior high students took photos of their city for a photo challenge. Faith Blackwood and Jacob Cull were awarded prizes in the colouring contest. Clare Coleman and Mohamed Al-Zubaidy were selected to be City Councillors for a mock council meeting held on Wednesday evening. The students visited the council chambers to celebrate Municipal Awareness Day and see what a real council meeting is like.

The grade two and three classes had a health scavenger hunt with student Nurse Jennifer Knee on Wednesday morning. 

The City of Corner Brook will be hosting a pizza party for their photo submissions for the Municipal Awareness Day.

The Student Leadership Council is collecting paper cups for the City of Corner Brook initiative “Cash for Cups”. This will continue until May 27^th. Please collect your cups for our school.

The junior and senior high girls were invited to attend a conference on Thursday sponsored by Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador. The event was called “Skills for Women Conference”. It was held at the College of the North Atlantic. The girls participated in Try-A-Trade Demonstrations in welding, electrical and millwright. 

Mrs. Nancy Buckle lead yoga sessions with our kindergarten to grade 1 students on Friday morning as an extension on our Mental Health Project “Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds”. In the afternoon, Ms. Sharon Evans of SEVA lead meditation sessions with students in grades two to six. 

Our school is hosting a grade six boys’ soccer tournament this weekend. The first game will be played today at 3:00 pm. We would like to wish our team the best of luck!

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about Mother’s Day and making special surprises for their mothers. They are enjoying playing outside and making props for the school musical in June. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning how to read bar graphs and learning some French letters and numbers. The students would like to wish a happy Mother’s Day to their mothers this weekend. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is working hard on subtracting, graphing, and data. They are learning about storms and lightening. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about the different kinds of maps, symbols, and legends. They are making special Mother’s Day surprises for their mothers. They are wishing Teresa a Happy Birthday this week! They would like to wish all their readers a Happy Mother’s Day.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion learned about Mother’s Day this week. They would like to wish all their mothers a wonderful day on Sunday. The students are enjoying their time in the greenhouse.

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is leading the school in the Grab Bag Challenge. They are encouraging everyone to collect used plastic bags for recycling and keep them out of our landfills. The students discussed healthy emotions and created a poster as part of Mental Health Week activities last week. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class enjoyed a scavenger hunt outside on Monday. The class took the opportunity to pick up some trash they found outside. In French they made Mother’s Day cards and will be making a special craft. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class are helping prepare props and signs for “The Trials of Alice in Wonderland”. The grade five and six students are finishing off their BloomBall activities.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is starting a new unit on fractions in math. They have been having fun playing pizza pie games with dominos to help with their understanding of fractions. They have finished their novel study on Pippi Longstocking and are looking forward to watching the movie today.

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class is very excited about the upcoming school Science Fair. This will be the first year the students prepare individual projects to present.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class began their D.A.R.E. program this week. The grade five students made talking sticks in social studies. The grade six students completed their novel study on “Holes” and wrote their very own crime report based on the characters and events in the book.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class are preparing for the upcoming science fair. The students would like to say congratulations to our Let’s Talk Science teams and our Underwater Robotics Teams for their successes last week! The students began an ArtSmarts project with Ms. Jane Reagh this week called “Anatomy of Me”. They are learning the parts and functions of the eye, ear, and mouth. They will then create a self portrait highlighting these parts. 

The students travelling to St. Pierre for the school French trip will leave on Tuesday at 1:00 pm. Bon Voyage!

The students travelling to St. Pierre would like to thank everyone who purchased tickets in support of their chocolate raffle before the Easter break. Luke Coleman was the first place winner of the Laura Secord Box of chocolates valued at $100, Madeline Murphy was the second place winner of a 850 g Dairy Milk Bar, and Simon Boitsefski won the third prize of a 850 g Dairy Milk Bar. 

We would like to thank our entire school community for their support of the Apple A Day Fundraiser. This fundraiser raised $25,600 for technology in our school. 

This week is National Volunteer Week. We would like to thank everyone who volunteers to help our school. In June, we will host our annual volunteer appreciation breakfast. 

On Monday our school hosted a special assembly for Earth Day. Students and staff dressed in Earth Day colours to raise money for the greenhouse. Students presented poems, songs, and skits about protecting our Earth. Mrs. Kane’s grade two classes kicked off a school wide ban on plastic bags and is organizing a “Grab Bag” collection to take plastic bags out of our landfills. 

The Recycle My Cell Campaign officially ends this week. We would like to thank everyone for their work in collecting these cell phones and keeping them out of landfills. 

The kindergarten to grade six students have been chosen as provincial winners in the Kids in Charge (K-I-C) Contest hosted by Newfoundland Light and Power. The school will receive $2,000 for a technology grant. In addition, there will be a special awards presentation on Tuesday and a pizza party for all students in kindergarten to grade 6. 

The Grade 6 Girls’ Soccer team will play an invitational tournament this weekend at Sacred Heart School. The girls play at 5:30 pm on Friday and at 9:00 am on Saturday. 

There was a parent information session for junior kindergarten and kindergarten students for September 2017 on Tuesday evening in our school cafeteria.

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to Carter Bromley whose Atom A Hockey Team won a silver medal at the Provincial Championship in Gander over Easter. 

Congratulations to Noah Colbourne whose Atom B Hockey Team won a silver medal in Clarenville during Easter break. 

Congratulations to Noah Evans and Samuel Antoncich’s Hockey Team who lost a well played game for a medal. 

Congratulations to Simon Boitsefski and Luke Coleman who were in Ontario this past week along with Ms. Matthews with the Provincial Boys’ Choir. 

Congratulations to Nikola Verbiski who won the Saige Raide Memorial Contest. Students between the ages of 8 and 12 had to design a piece of jewelry. Nikola’s winning entry will now be made by Blue Marlin Jewelry for Mother’s Day.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are planting beans in homemade mini-greenhouses. This is a class science experiment. The students enjoyed their Easter break, but are glad to be back in school with their friends.  They would like to thank their ECE students Julie Curtis and Katie Nichol who finished their placements this week.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class learned about ways children can help protect our planet. They are finishing subtraction in math and starting to learn about data and graphing. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class planted in the greenhouse this week. The students are very excited to watch their seeds grow. The children are reflecting on what can help and what may hurt a tiny seed.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a wonderful Easter break, but they are happy to be back with their friends. They really enjoyed their Dental Health session with Nurse Knee this week. We are finishing up our geometry unit in math. They would like to wish Thomas a very happy birthday!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class had a lot of fun this week learning about Earth Day. They made Earth Day mobiles and wrote about what they could do to protect the Earth.

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is excited to kick off the Grab Bag Challenge and recycle as many plastic bags as they can for a chance to win $500 for the school. This is a big deal for their class since the class visited City Hall last month regarding banning plastic bags in Corner Brook and now the school.

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class is learning about Earth Day this week. They started making surveys in math for a unit on graphing. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is wrapping up the first part of their grammar unit. They will be preparing for a test soon. In math they are moving  into a measurement unit and finishing their in-class assignment on data and research. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class was excited to be attending Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador’s production of Jack Five-Oh and Andy Jones this Thursday at the Arts and Culture Centre. They are continuing their math unit on Geometry and are examining the differences between pyramids and prisms. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class is beginning geometry in math. They are also learning more about verbs in language arts. The students are glad to see their friends again after the Easter break. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class wrote a skit to perform at our school assembly for Earth Day on Monday. They learned lots of interesting facts about Earth Day and recycling in Newfoundland and Labrador. The grade five students are working on a novel study on “Number the Stars”. The grade six students are writing essays about what they would do if they could be mayor of Corner Brook for one day.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class is preparing for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge and the Underwater Robotics Event. The grade nine to Level 3 students visited the Greenwood Inn pool on Wednesday afternoon to test their robot and practice missions in the pool.
