Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (28/9/18)

Today is medical theme day at IHMS! Our students and staff are dressed as medical professionals and hospital patients in aid of the Western Memorial Health Foundation Radiothon.
IHMS students celebrated National Tree Day on Wednesday with a variety of activities. All students created leaves to place on a tree in our school lobby. Ms. Jessica Galliott planted with classes in the school greenhouse and around the schoolyard. In addition, the grade five and six students participated in the Explore Forestry Day at Margaret Bowater Park. Mr. Ryley’s class won the roll of paper and the model machines donated by Kruger.
Our cross -country running team attended their first meet of the season at J.J. Curling on Wednesday.  Representing grade four were Isaiah Coleman and Mark Janes; in grade five Luke Coleman, Oscar George, James Lao, Cole Lyver, and Lily Smallwood; representing grade six were Carter Bromley, Molly George, Kate Murphy, Alyssa Power, and Gabe Rowsell. Congratulations to all our runners on an excellent start to the season! Congratulations to Isaiah Coleman who placed third for grade four boys, Luke Coleman who placed first in grade five boys, and Carter Bromley who placed first in grade six boys.
Our annual vegetable fundraiser orders are now due at the office. The vegetables will be delivered next week in time for thanksgiving.

Isabelle and Charlotte Mercier are in St. John’s this week practicing with the Provincial Girls’ Choir.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes would like to welcome Ms. Wand Lee Bowles to the junior kindergarten program. They are learning about autumn and enjoying outside play.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning about fall. The students made leaf rubbings in art class. They are starting to learn how to sort using attributes.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about what they like to do in the fall. They are learning about what happens to the sun each day in science class. The star of the week is Ava.
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is discussing soil and its importance to all living things. They are working on increasing number patterns and writing rules for them. They are excited for medical theme day today!
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about clouds this week. They are also working on numbers up to 100.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class made leaves to put on the tree in our school lobby for National Tree Day. They will have their first spelling test next week. Bonne chance!
Mrs. Williams’s grade three class is reading about Terry Fox and writing about his character traits such as courage and honesty. In math class they are finishing their pattern unit and doing review.
Ms. Hink’s grade four class has completed their first unit in language arts. They are now learning amazing facts about killer whales. They are having their first math test today.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class had a great time on their Explore Forestry Field trip on Wednesday. They are in their final steps of their archaeology dig.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is preparing a science experiment about sour candies. In science they are building balloon rockets.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is preparing a book talk presentation for English class. In social studies they are working on family biography projects.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class welcomed new students from Brazil to their class this week. Chemistry 2202 students are learning about mole. Canadian studies students are learning about Canadian artists.
Coming Up

Our annual thanksgiving dinner will take place at 12:15 on Friday, October 5. If you are able to help volunteer to serve dinner, please contact the office.
