Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (5/4/19)

This week we continued the IHMS salad bar on Tuesday. It was another huge success!
Our junior and senior bands, junior kindergarten and kindergarten choir, primary choir, elementary choir, and chamber choir performed in the Rotary Music Festival this week. All of our students performed exceptionally well. We would like to thank Ms. Alteen for working with all the groups and to Thomas Moerschell for accompanying the choirs on piano.

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning more about spring this week. They were excited to be a part of the music festival with the kindergarten class.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is participated in the music festival this week. They did an awesome job! The students had their kindergarten graduation photos taken this week.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class went on a structure hunt in science class this week. They are really loving their geometry unit. They sang in the festival yesterday. Congratulations to Nate and Lexi who performed their own pieces in the festival!
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is cluing up their research on a francophone country and making posters to display the interesting facts they have learned. They are beginning a unit about the maple sugar harvest in Quebec that surrounds the spring season. The students were very excited to perform in the festival this week.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about how to use commas, plurals, and abbreviations in language arts. They are discussing volunteering in social studies and simple machines in science.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class has had a busy week with the Rotary Music Festival. In Français, they are doing reading assignments. In math, the grade fours are dividing decimals.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class learned about the positive interactions among people in social studies. Students discussed different interactions they’ve had at school and how to promote more of these kinds of interactions. In health, students continued this theme by learning about the different qualities of a good friend. Students then created their own group skits to show how a person can be a good friend.
Mrs. Hinks’ grade four class wrote pourquoi tales as a class and then presented it to the grade one class. It is called “How the Unicorn Lost Its Horn”. They are researching for the Heritage Fair and learning a lot of amazing facts.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class has started working on their heritage fair projects. They performed this week in the musical festival with the school band and choir.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is finished their novel study on Bridge to Terabithia and celebrated by watching the movie and noting the comparisons.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is preparing for a math quiz on ratio rate and percentages. They are excited about the upcoming drama festival next week in Rocky Harbour.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (29/3/19)

Our annual Applea-A-Day Ticket Sales have begun. The proceeds of this fundraiser will be used to offset the cost of the replacement of the floor.  Tickets are $20 each and includes five days of draws. The prizes include: Apple TV, apple watch, apple iPad mini, iPhone 8, and a Macbook Air.
The grade five to Level III students went to Marble Mountain on Monday for skiing and snowboarding lessons. Everyone had a great time. Thank you to Mr. Drew Nadon, Mr. Ryley Nadon, Mr. Hancock and Ms. Alteen for accompanying the students.
On Thursday we hosted a Music Theme Day. Students dressed in music themed clothing or as their favourite performs. That evening we hosted, a Pre-Festival Showcase to show our families and school community the pieces we have been working on for the festival. Thank you to Ms. Alteen for organizing this and to Thomas Moerschell for accompanying all the choirs, and Christian Mouland for assisting with the music.
Salad Bar Tuesday was another huge success. Thank you to our volunteers and students for supporting this initiative. This will continue every Tuesday until the end of the school year. The junior kindergarten students were able to avail of the salad bar as part of their lunch program on Wednesday.
Ms. Bursey’s class is collecting plastic shopping bags for the Plastic bag Challenge! This collection will continue until the end of April.
We have begun collecting used and broken cell phones for the annual Recycle My Cell Campaign.

Congratulations to Ms. McCarthy who hosted a Charity Spin Class on Sunday in aid of Willow House. The total amount raised both online and at the event was $1,235.00!
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about healthy living outside and enjoying the nice weather. They are practicing for the music festival next week.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning how to do bubble letters in art. They are learning about cooperation in social studies and three element patterns in math. There is lots of learning going on.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about spring this week. They are starting their geometry unit in math. They are very excited to be performing in the music festival next week!
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is looking forward to the festival. The grade two students are working on addition with regrouping. The grade three students have begun an introduction to fractions. They have all been learning about other countries around the world that have Francophone populations. The students were surprised that there are so many and that their cultures are so diverse.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about re-grouping addition. They are continuing to learn about movement including rolling and sliding.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class did a theme on “cuisine” this past week. The grade four students are excelling in multiplication and have also started division. The grade five and six began long division in math class. Students are excited for the music festival.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class has begun a new unit in math on fractions. In French, students designed their own French birthday invitations using vocabulary words related to birthdays, months, and dates. To celebrate World Water Day, students watched a video called “How Much Water is in the World?” and discussed reasons we need water and problems that would arise if we had no water.
Mrs. Hinks’ grade four class is welcoming spring by writing poems in language arts. They are starting their second chapter on multiplication in math.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is working hard on their Kids in Charge Energy savings project. This week they held a chocolate taste testing event. Their favourite chocolate was Mirage and Cadbury Dairy Milk.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is finishing their novel study on Bridge to Terabithia and beginning to make up their own fantasy land.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class has begun preparation for the Let’s Talk Science Challenge. The students thoroughly enjoyed their day at Marble Mountain on Monday.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is preparing for the upcoming drama festival and Underwater Robotics. Math 3201 students are learning about experimental functions. Canadian studies students are learning about The Great Depression.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (22/3/19)

Our students and staff enjoyed a winter break with a long weekend last week.
Tuesday was a very exciting day in our school as it was the grand opening of the IHMS Salad bar! This new service will be available every Tuesday. We had many delicious types of salad available including quinoa salad, broccoli salad, Caesar salad, and fruit salad. In addition, there were a variety of salad toppings available to choose from. We would like to thank our staff and volunteers for their hard work in preparing the food and the beautiful artwork for the grand opening.
We would like to congratulate our students who attended the Provincial Chess tournament this past weekend. IHMS hosted another amazing tournament with students attending from all across the island. Representing our school we had Andrew Ryan and Spencer Kean in kindergarten; Mary Jay Cull in grade one; Fabian Ryan, Grayson Roberts, Hunter Olmstead, and Adam Thomas in grade two; Katy Hancock and Yasmin Alkhlil in grade three; Uriah Cull and Jack Watton in grade four; Candace Johannesen in grade six; and Thomas Moerschell in level 1. We would also like to thank our parents, staff, and volunteers for all the work they did in organizing, planning, and supporting this event. Special thank you to Mrs. Cull, Ms. Williams, Ms. Jennifer Pendleton, and Mr. Hancock who lead our chess club.
On Thursday morning we held a special assembly to honour our provincial chess champions and to give out special chess club awards in memory of Mr. Jose Lam. The chess club held a party afterschool on Thursday to celebrate their successes over the weekend. We would like to congratulate the award recipients from this assembly. Top performing awards for the Provincial Chess tournament went to Fabian Ryan (male), and Katy Hancock (female); Rookie of the Year for 2019 went to Andrew Ryan (male) and Mary Jay Cull (female); Most Improved Player Awards went to Adam Thomas (male) and Yasmin Alkhalil (female); Sportsmanship Award  went to Jack Watton (male) and Candace Johannesen (female); IHMS CHESS Global Ambassador Award went to Thomas Moerschell; IHMS CHESS dedication to the game of chess awards & for the love of the game awards went to Uriah Cull, Grayson Roberts, Jacob Cull, Liam Gaulton, Hunter Olmstead, and Spencer Kean.

The junior kindergarten classes would like to welcome two Early Childhood Education students who will be with their class for a five week work placement. The students are busy preparing for the Rotary Music Festival.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class would like to welcome two new students to their class this week. Welcome to Sanna and Alex! The students are looking forward to spring and doing spring activities.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about how to take care of our water supply for World Water Day. They are finishing their penguin research projects. They all really enjoyed a tasty salad on Tuesday for the official opening of the salad bar. The star of the week is Rudy.
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is super excited about the arrival of spring. They painted Friendship rocks to place in the green spaces around the school. They are discussing and exploring with magnets in science.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about supply and demand. In science they are investigating with causes objects to move.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class had a lot of fun doing activities for International Francophone Day. All classes finished their unit in math. They would like to extend congratulations to Candace Johannesen who won the Sportsmanship Award at the Chess Assembly.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class learned about the properties of magnets and tests different materials to see if they were magnetic or not. They also tried experiments with magnets to see if they could make a paper clip and a magnet float. In math, students began exploring mass and estimating the mass of different objects.
Mrs. Hinks’ grade four class is learning about sequencing in language arts. They learned about different climates and vegetation in social studies. They are discovering how amazing rocks are in science.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is looking at a variety of ways to make a lift in STEM. In language arts they are preparing for a chocolate taste test and planning their trip to Wonka’s factory.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is almost finished reading Bridge to Terabithia. In math they are learning long division. In science they are working on the Kids in Charge Energy Savings Contest.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is working on their heritage fair projects. Students will be going to Marble Mountain on Monday for skiing and snowboarding lessons.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is excited about their skiing and snowboarding trip on Monday. Chemistry 2202 students are learning about bonding forces. Biology 3201 students are starting molecular genetics.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (15/3/19)

This week we hosted the annual IHMS Elementary School Speak Off in our school cafeteria. Representing grade four were Jack Watton, Brooklyn Pittman, and Robert Morrissey; representing grade five were Luke Coleman, Israela Ngania, and Lily Smallwood; and representing grade six were Brooke Watton, Gabriel Rowsell, and Candace Johannesen. We would like to thank our judges Mrs. Sandee Harnum and Ms. Paula Grudich.  Lily Smallwood was selected as the overall winner.
This week we celebrated Pi Day on Thursday. Classes held Pi recitation competitions and sent their top two students to the gym to compete for the overall school Pi championship! Candance Johannesen took first place with 113 digits, Leah Lainey took second place with 71 digits, Thomas Moerschell was third with 64 digits, and Katy Hancock was fourth with 63 digits.  Ms. Alteen, Mr. Drew, Mr. Ryley and Mrs. McCarthy volunteered to be pied in the face as a fundraiser for the Enrichment Program.
Report cards went home on Wednesday and we hosted parent teacher interviews on Thursday afternoon and evening.
On Friday we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a green theme day. Many classes set up traps to catch the leprechaun, however, he couldn’t be caught!
Our indoor soccer season has begun for both boys and girls.

The junior kindergarten classes are looking forward to setting a trap to catch a leprechaun. They are making St. Patrick’s Day crafts.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning new sight words “get” and “let”. They enjoyed the presentation by NL Light and Power on conserving energy and safety. In math they are learning low to measure.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about St. Patrick and doing some leprechaun writing this week. They are building traps and hope to catch one!
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class is enjoying some St. Patrick’s Day themed activities. In math, they are exploring mass with fun hands on activities.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about supply and demand. They are starting a new unit in math on addition to 100 and movement in science.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class is participating in the Friends For Life Program. The students used their STEM skills to build incredible traps for the leprechaun. They had so much participating in the Pi Day activities. The class would like to congratulate Candace, Jamie and Israela for being selected as class representatives for the Pi Contest and to Candace for being the overall winner.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class learned how to measure objects using centimetres and meters, and how to measure the perimeter of an object.  In health class, students learned the importance of spiritual and social health as well as physical health. In language arts class they are having a lot of fun reading “The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking”.
Mrs. Hinks’ grade four class had a lot of fun preparing for Pi Day by memorizing the digits of Pi. They also helped prepare art work and table decorations for the Provincial Chess Tournament.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class enjoyed their first session of the “Friends for Life” program this week. They are continuing their novel study on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is learning about multiplying and dividing decimals in math. In social studies they are learning about the countries of the world.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is busy preparing their play “Gossip” for the Regional Drama Festival. In language arts they have started to research for the upcoming Heritage Fair.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class visited the College of the North Atlantic on Wednesday for an open house event. Canadian Studies students are learning about The Great Depression. Math 2201 students are learning about solving quadratic equations.

The provincial chess tournament will be held at our school on Saturday morning.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (8/3/19)

This week we celebrated Shrove Tuesday with a schoolwide pancake breakfast. We would like to thank Mrs. King, Mrs. George, Ms. Cornick, Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Marie Ryan, and Mrs. Hinks for preparing the pancakes for everyone. It was a delicious treat!
On Wednesday, we celebrated a special mass for Ash Wednesday. This marks the official beginning of the season of Lent. During this season we spend some extra time focusing on the Stations of the Cross lead by Luke Coleman and Lily Smallwood.
The grade 6 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams participated in the RNC Basketball Tournament this week. Player of the Game Awards were given to Brooke Watton, Leah Lainey, Israela Ngania, Alyssa Power, Molly George, Gabe Rowsell, Carter Bromley, Noah Colbourne, Danyael Jacobs, Jacob Butt, and Jack Watton. Congratulations to the girls who lost in overtime by one basket. The boys won the semi-finals in overtime by one point to win a silver medal.
National Science and Engineering Month Bridge Building Competition is this weekend at the Corner Brook Plaza.
Congratulations to Mark Janes, Leah Lainey, and Carter Bromley who were winners in the annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition held in our school on Sunday evening.

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about Lent. They have begun working on crafts of St. Patrick’s Day.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning all about their neighbourhood. They are talking about similarities and differences in science. Their sight word list is getting longer all the time. They have added the words “to” and “go”.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about Lent in religion class and thinking of special things they can do to celebrate the season. They are counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s in math class. They are really excited to start their penguin research unit!
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class are working on procedural learning. Their topic for this piece is how to build a snowman. Given the weather lately, this seemed an appropriate topic! They are also having a lot of fun as they begin their science unit on invisible forces.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about jobs people have in their social studies class. In science, they are learning about movement.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class is planning activities for International Francophone Day that will take place this month. All classes will have a math quiz Monday. They would like to wish Candace, Israela, and Charlotte the best of luck at the RNC Grade 6 Girls’ Basketball Tournament.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class has started a research assignment on their novel Pippi Longstocking. In math, they learned how to read calendars and measure time.
Mrs. Hink’s grade four class has completed the writing of their Porquoi tales and drawn pictures to go with the words. They are excited about presenting it to Mrs. George’s grade one class. They have begun learning about rocks in science.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class is presenting their medieval kingdoms in social studies this week. They are starting their problem stage in STEM.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is continuing their novel study on Bridge to Terabithia. They had playing tests this week in band class.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is participating in the Geosciences and Engineering Month Bridge Building Competition this Saturday at the Corner Brook Plaza. The students have worked very hard on designing and building their bridges.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is completing their bridges this week for the competition. Math 3201 students are learning about exponential functions. Science 1206 students are completing distance / speed vs time graphs.
Coming Up
Salad Bar grand opening is on March 19.

Our school will host the Provincial Chess Tournament on March 16.

Grade 5/6 New's Article - Lion's Roar (1/3/19)

This week we hosted another successful Scholastic Book Fair. Thank you to our families for your support. Erica Kennedy was the winner of the page estimation contest, Kira McCarthy was the winner in the family draw and Grace Brake-Higgins was the winner in the chocolate guessing. We would like to send special thanks to Mrs. George, teacher volunteers and Mr. Bryan McCarthy for their help with organizing the book fair.
On Wednesday we honoured Pink t-shirt day for anti-bullying campaigns. Classes focused on activities throughout the week and Wednesday on the importance of being kind to others.
On Thursday morning we held our Midterm Assembly to honour students with perfect attendance, perfect spelling, excellence in spelling, improvements in reading, improvements in writing, and honours and distinctions for junior and senior high students.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to our IHMS Chess players on an outstanding performance at the Regional Chess Tournament over the weekend! All of our students qualified for the Provincial Chess Tournament on March 16.
Congratulations to Isaiah Coleman and Charlotte Mercier who attended the Provincial Scripps Spelling Bee hosted by the Telegram. Charlotte placed in the top 29 and Isaiah placed in the top 22 out of 81 participants.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are learning about kindness and what friendship means. They were happy to wear pink on Pink T-shirt day to support kindness to everyone.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class is learning the word “take” this week and all about the number “9”. They would like to say congratulations to Andrew Ryan and Spencer Kean on winning medals in the chess tournament last weekend.
Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about our natural resources in social studies. They are enjoying counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s in math class. The star of the week is Zoe. The class would like to wish a happy birthday to Nate!
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class has been discussing visible and non-visible differences. They are reading and discussing books about how we are all different. The children have been working on Venn diagrams with a partner to investigate the topic further. They are also working on a writing piece about a snow storm.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about measurement using blocks and other materials. They are busy counting and estimating the plastic bags the school is recycling as part of the Plastic Bag Challenge.
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class would like to congratulate Charlotte on her fine showing in the Scripps Spelling Bee last weekend and to Israela and Candace on their strong performance at the West Coast Grade Six Basketball Tournament. The grade four and five students have been working hard on multiplication and division. The grade six students are constructing and interpreting line graphs.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class had a lot of fun celebrating the 100th day of school with different activities including a math game called “Race to 100” and timing themselves to see how many times they could do a variety of activities in 100 seconds. In math, students started their measurement unit and used a pendulum to measure time. In language arts class, the grade threes started a novel study on Pippi Longstocking.
Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is writing pourqoi tales about unicorns. In math they have started a new unit on division.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class made medieval villages with Legos this week as part of their STEM project. The grade five students are enjoying working on daily five activities in language arts.
Mrs. McCarthy’s grade six class is learning about different countries and writing about their culture. In math they are working on division.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is working on model bridges. In math they are working on an assignment about sales tax. In language arts they are presenting songs and identifying literary devices they contain.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is continuing to work on model bridges. Math 3201 students have begun exponential functions. Earth Systems 3209 students are learning about sedimentary rocks.

Lysea Njinang was the school winner in the Say Yes to Friendship Poster Contest. Lysea's poster was featured as part of Pink T-shirt Day for anti-bullying awareness.

Grade 5/6 New's article - Lion's Roar (22/2/19)

The grade four students enjoyed their last cross country skiing lesson at Blow Me Down. They would like to thank Mr. Ryley Nadon, Mrs. Hinks, and the staff at Blow Me Down for an excellent program.
On Tuesday, we celebrated the 100th day of school with a theme day. It was very exciting. Students brought 100th day collections and did 100th day theme activities in their classes.
On Wednesday, we had Winter Carnival activities in our school gym. Thank you to Mr. Ryley and the junior and senior high students for organizing the activities.
Thursday was another big day with the IHMS Chess theme day! Many of our students will participate in the Regional Chess Tournament this weekend. Good luck, everyone.
IHMS hosted the annual Winter Carnival Spelling Bee on Thursday evening. Representing the grade four class we had Isaiah Coleman and Heidi Payne; in grade five we had Lily Smallwood and Israela Ngania; in grade six we had Carter Bromley and Erica Kennedy. We would like to thank our speaker Ms. Angel McCarthy, and our judges, Ms. Linda Chaisson and Mrs. Sandee Harnum.
On Friday morning we held a pep rally for Isaiah Coleman and Charlotte Mercier who will be attending the provincial Scripps Spelling Bee in St. John’s, NL. We would like to extend good luck to Isaiah and Charlotte who will represent our school.
Ms. Bursey’s grade two class has taken up the Plastic Bag Challenge. They are asking all our IHMS families to collect their single use plastic bags for recycling.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Luke Coleman and Thomas Moerschell who performed with the Atlantic Boy Choir this weekend in Corner Brook.
Congratulations to Carter Bromley who played in a AAA Pee Wee hockey tournament.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are celebrating the 100th day of school by making crowns and learning about the number 100. They had a lot of fun doing Winter Carnival activities on Wednesday.
Ms. Cornick’s Kindergarten class was very excited to celebrate the 100th day of school. They made fruit loop necklaces, 100th day hats, and 100th day cake. They had a 100th day of fun!
Mrs. George’s grade one English class had a wonderful time celebrating the 100th day of school! All their learning that day was centered around the number 100. They even dressed as 100 year old people.
Mme. Ryan’s grade two and three French Immersion class was very excited about the 100th day of school. They wrote about what type of collections they would create. They had some very creative ideas! They also had a lot of fun doing their Winter Carnival activities and chess theme day on Thursday. What an extra fun week!
Ms. Bursey’s grade two English class is learning about measurement in math and elements of short stories. They are excited to be leaders in the Plastic Bag Challenge this year!
Mme. King’s grade four, five and six French Immersion class really enjoyed the fun week of activities at IHMS. The class would like to congratulate Candace Johannesen, Brooklyn Pittman, and Israela Ngania who were part of the choir who sang “O’Canada” at the assembly for National Flag Day. All classes were busy this week with math computations activities and noun-adjective agreements. They would like to wish Brooklyn a very happy birthday on Saturday.
Ms. Williams’ grade three class watched an episode of The Magic School Bus about force and motion in science class. During this class they were able to discuss what a world without friction would be like. In math, students wrote a quiz and completed their unit on addition and subtraction.
Mrs. Hink’s grade four class is excited to send two of their classmates to the Carnival Spelling Bee. They are preparing for speech presentations in language arts. They enjoyed their last cross country ski lesson on Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. Ryley’s grade five class enjoyed their feudalism simulation in social studies and are looking forward to building their castles. They presented their speeches on Thursday and Friday.
Ms. McCarthy’s grade six class is learning about other countries in social studies. This week they had an in-class spelling bee competition and presented their speeches for the Elementary Speak-off next week.
Mr. Drew Nadon’s grade seven and eight class is working on a final assignment on taxes. In social studies, the students are finishing off their WW1 simulation.
Mr. Hancock’s grade nine to level three class is working on their model bridges. Earth Systems 3209 students are studying rock types. Math 2201 students are studying quadratic functions.
