Last Friday evening the Student Leadership Council hosted a “Snowball” Dance for junior and senior high students. The students had a great time! They would like to thank Mr. McCarthy for providing the music and their chaperones Mrs. King, Mr. Drew, Ms. Bishop and Mme. Howlett.

On Sunday evening there was a meeting for students in grades five and up who are interested in traveling to St. Pierre in May. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class won a pizza party as part of the annual food bank for collecting the most food items per student. Constable Shawn Park visited them to deliver the pizza. The class would like to thank Louis Gee’s for donating the pizza!

On Tuesday we hosted a goodbye party for our Brazilian exchange students. In addition to party snacks and treats, all classes visited to present the students with cards and say goodbye. 

The grade four students enjoyed their second lesson in cross country skiing this week at Blow Me Down Ski Park. 

The grade four English and French Immersion classes participated in a presentation on anti-Smoking presented by Public Health nursing students Charlotte Wolfrey, Melissa Kennedy and Nicole Targett.

 The kindergarten English and French Immersion classes went on their annual western Regional Memorial Hospital Foundation orientation session. 

The Grade 6 Girls’ Basketball Team is participating in a tournament this weekend at St. Gerard’s School.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are enjoying the sunshine and playing outside early in the week. They are learning about winter and the letters “c” and “d”. The students welcome Lexie Hedderson to their class this week. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class enjoyed their hospital orientation field trip at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. This week they are working on the letter “p” and positional words in math. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class enjoyed discovering patterns in nature. They looked at zebras, snakes, and butterfly patterns. They worked hard on writing their upper case and lower case “f” this week. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about rights and responsibilities in social studies. They are learning about what life was like when Jesus grew up in their religion class. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class began a new unit in math. They are learning about measurement. They made a height chart in their classroom. The students drew and painted cardinals this week. They are beautiful. 

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class wrote the mayor in support of a plastic bag ban in our city. Their letter will be on the agenda of the February 6^th Public Council meeting. Our students, families, and staff are welcome to attend. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class has been learning about sequencing and step procedure by giving instructions on how to make hot chocolate. They used their adjectives to describe hot chocolate and surveyed the class to graph about their preferences. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class enjoyed making delicious hot chocolate and then describing it in French. The grade three and four students are starting a unit on poetry and a preparing for a math quiz. The grade five and six students are preparing to put off their production of “Telebacon” a French screenplay that they wrote, revised, directed and starred in! 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class have started their first novel study. They are reading “Pippi Longstocking” and are excited to see what quirky things Pippi will get into. They are still looking daily at their Little Green Thumbs Garden and things are growing nicely!

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class had a very busy week. They enjoyed a talk on anti-smoking from the Public Health nurse, a pizza party for winning the food bank contest, and they continued their cross country skiing lessons.

Grade four students Kate Murphy, Aaron Payne, Samuel Antoncich and Charlotte Mercier take part in a health presentation in anti-smoking. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is finishing up their novel studies this week in language arts and celebrating by watching the movie adaptations. The grade five students had their chocolate taste test. Their favourite chocolate bar was Hersey followed closely by Lindt.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class is continuing to write midterm exams this week. They had a farewell party for our Brazilian exchange students on Tuesday afternoon.  The student’s enjoyed their very first school dance last Friday night.

On Monday our students were treated to a magic show! Father Roache visited the classrooms in the school and performed magic tricks to the amazement of all the students and teachers. On Thursday, we celebrated a special Mass with Father Roache during his visit to Corner Brook.

Our school public health nurse, Ms. Lynette Christopher, along with her nursing student, Charlotte Wolfrey, presented to our grade four and five classes about looking after our own health.

The annual Cross Country Skiing Program at Blow Me Down will start next week for the students in grade four. 

The grade six girls’ basketball team will compete in their first tournament of the year. They are playing in the Tiny Titans Tournament hosted at Corner Brook Regional High. The first game takes place on Friday at 5:00 pm.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are making winter theme crafts. They are learning the letter “B” and practicing doing their own magic tricks!

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is using Playdoh to make shapes in math. They are working on the letter “P”. The students really enjoyed the magic show on Monday.

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about root cellars, including how they are made and why. The children are also discovering a new letter “J” and French words related to weather.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is sampling different breads from around the world in social studies. They are doing subtraction stories in math class.

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class really enjoyed the magic show on Monday. They are busy learning new French vocabulary and enjoying the snow outside.  

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class had a great week! The students would like to welcome Gabriella Lawrence to their class. The students are learning about polar bears. Did you know that their hair is transparent and the skin underneath is black?

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class has been practicing their math skills when using money. They are using games to practice their French sentence building.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class really enjoyed the magic show on Monday. This week they welcomed a new grade six student, Max Pittman, to their class. The grade three and four students are interviewing people who moved to Canada about why they decided to emigrate. The grade five and six students are creating their own utopian societies based on what they learned about government structures and laws.

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is learning about shading, edging and shaping in art. The students are excited to be drawing 3D objects. This will be incorporated into their contouring and sketching unit. The classroom garden is thriving and the plants are growing. The students are excited to welcome Sommer Lawrence to their class this week.

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class was excited to take part in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in their class. It was their first time ever participating in a bee and it was very exciting to practice the challenging words. Stay tuned for the class winners next week! The students would like to welcome Destinee Lawrence to their class.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is enjoying their STEM project in science class with Mme. Moss and Mr. Ryley. The students are learning through problem solving.  The girls’ basketball team will participate in their first tournament this weekend. On Monday the grade six students had a race to determine who could run the fastest. After many races the final winner and “Fastest Kid in the Sixth Grade” is Clare Coleman. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class went sliding at Margaret Bowater Park on Wednesday as part of their Enrichment class. They are busy planning a dance for junior and senior high students on January 20^th. The students are also preparing for their first midterm exam next week.

 We would like to welcome everyone back from Christmas holidays. Happy New Year, everyone!

Before the break our school enjoyed a skating part at the Corner Brook Civic Centre hosted by the Knights of Columbus. We had an hour of skating and a snack afterwards. We would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for donating the ice time and snacks. Everyone had a great time!

We would like to welcome Ms. Jennifer Matthews to our school staff. Ms. Matthews will be directing our school choirs during Mr. Graham’s absence.

Congratulations to Arista White who has received notification that her poem was selected to be printed in a publication called by Young Writers called “The Heart of Solstice” and her poem is being considered for an award to be announced this June. 

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about New Years and making resolutions for their classroom. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about what the New Year means. They are also completing Heritage posters. They are working on the letter “m”.

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning the letter “j” like “Janvier” and are discovering how Fireworks are made. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about their resolutions and doing some New Year’s crafts. They would like to congratulate Makayla for placing first in the Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas Colouring Contest. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is excited to be back to school. They had a lot of fun sharing their stories and toys. They have been using manipulatives to estimate for addition and subtraction. They have been talking about winter vocabulary and doing winter activities. 

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is excited and happy to have Isaiah Coleman re-joining their class. The students are excited to share information about their Christmas vacations. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class had a wonderful break and are ready to get back to work and learning. In the next few weeks they are going to be working on their French vocabulary and building their math skills. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is working on a poetry unit in French. The class is glad to be back to school after the Christmas break. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is finishing their Heritage Places Posters this week. They were surprised to see how their plants grew over the Christmas break. They are having a show and tell on Friday where the students will have an opportunity to share something exciting that they received over Christmas. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class is excited to be starting their cross country skiing program next week. The students are preparing for their in class Scripps Spelling Bee next week!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is excited to be back with their classmates after the Christmas break. Everyone enjoyed their holidays. The students are preparing for the in class Scripps Spelling Bee next week. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class is busy preparing for their midterm exams. The Brazilian students are in the last month of their exchange program in Canada.

Lion’s Roar

Over the weekend our school community came together to celebrate Christmas with our annual Tree Trimming event. The grade five and six class organized the afternoon event with games, colouring, music, signing, and decorating the school Christmas tree. New families to our school brought ornaments to add to the decorations already donated from past years. The winner of the 50/50 contest was Ms. Barb Anderson. Teresa Coleman won the candy guessing game. We would like to thank Ms. Yvette Coleman for accompanying on piano and leading the sing-a-long.  

On Tuesday evening our school hosted our annual Christmas concert. It was a very special night with class performances, choir performances, brass band performance, a string band performance, a Brazilian Christmas performance and, a cello soloist. It was quite a night! We would like to thank Ms. Cindy Kawja who directed the choir, Ms. Gina Kane who directed the band, CBRH for loaning our school additional chairs, our staff, and students on a wonderful concert. 

Earlier this week our students and staff got into the Christmas spirit with a red, green and white theme day for Christmas. 

Today our Firefighters’ Toy Drive Stockings for Seniors Drive officially end. Thank you to our students and families for your generous support.

School closes for kindergarten to level 3 students on Tuesday, December 20. School will close for Junior Kindergarten on Thursday, December 22. School re-opens for all students on January 3, 2017.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes were very excited to take part in their first Christmas concert. They have finished making their Christmas cards and crafts this week.  They sang some Christmas songs this week and listened to “Silent Night”.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class had a lot of fun at the Christmas concert. They worked hard to learn their songs and poem. They enjoyed their Polar Express Day on Wednesday. The students wore their pyjamas to school, drank hot chocolate and used their Polar Express tickets to watch the movie. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is making beautiful “magic Santa keys” and writing more French words like “Joyeux Noël”, “cadeau” and “traineau”

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is doing more Christmas writing and finishing up their Christmas presents for their parents. They would like to wish our readers a very Merry Christmas and Happy New year!

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class enjoyed their French Immersion performance in the Christmas concert. The class worked really hard on their performance. They would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is happy and proud of their classmates and school on a great Christmas concert. They were excited to see the recording of the concert’s live stream the next day. The students are looking forward to Christmas break. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class did some fun Christmas activities in math and played a great game of French Christmas charades. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class visited Québec this week as part of their French Food Tour. The class enjoyed maple syrup pops prepared outside in the snow. The grade three and four students are almost ready to perform their play about the gingerbread man. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has been busy this week with Christmas activities incorporated in math, French and language arts. They were very excited to take part in the annual Christmas concert on Tuesday evening. Great job, everyone!

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class made their own nativity scene in art and completed a Christmas booklet. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class enjoyed taking part in the Christmas concert on Tuesday night. The grade five students are making Christmas song madlibs this week. The grade six students are learning about Christmas traditions around the world in social studies.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class is working on Christmas art projects this week. The students are also busy preparing acts for the variety show next week. 

Coming Up

Our school is going ice skating on Monday. This event is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

We will have a school wide pancake breakfast on Tuesday and a variety show at 1:00 pm.

Santa’s Claus visited our school on Wednesday to have photos taken with all the classes. The students were very excited to see him again this year. 

The Intermediate Skills Challenge group presented their projects and demonstrated the skills they learned over the past two months. We held an assembly in the gym to recognize their provincial accomplishments and see the demonstrations. 

On Thursday we celebrated the Immaculate Conception at All Hallows with Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group. 

This week our classes and choirs have been busy preparing for the concert next week. Everyone is very excited. The teachers started decorating the gym on Sunday afternoon and this continued all week. Our concert is being held on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm. 

Our school is participating in an allergy friendly food drive for Christmas. Classes were asked to bring in allergen specific food items throughout the week. The food drive officially ends today.

The student leadership council is continuing to collect for the Senior’s Stocking Drive and the Fire Fighters’ Toy Drive. Thank you to everyone for their generous donations. These drives will continue until December 16^th.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are practicing for the Christmas concert. They really enjoyed Santa’s visit on Wednesday. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class enjoyed their visit with Santa on Wednesday. They were very excited to receive a letter from the North Pole this week. The students are continuing to work on numbers in math. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is discovering many beautiful words related to Christmas such as “Joyeux Noël”, “Père Noël” , “cadeau”, and “sapin”.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class has started some Christmas projects this week. They are practicing hard for the Christmas concert on Tuesday. They were very excited that Mrs. Deckert came to their class to read a special Christmas story about Jesus. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class and Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class worked together this week to write a Christmas story about a lost present. They drew illustrations to go with the story. The students were very excited to have Santa visit on Wednesday. All of the students were lucky enough to have their pictures taken with him!

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is excited to be getting ready for the Christmas season. They are singing, decorating and making lots of arts and crafts for their friends and family. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is working on a play about gingerbread man. The grade five and six students are going on a trip around the world to see how some French countries celebrate Christmas. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has designed Wanted Posters for three and four digit numbers in math. The students picked a number and represented it in various ways on their posters. They are excited to report that their garden is growing. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class used chalk and oil pastels to create the Northern Lights in art class. They investigated different kinds of rocks in science and watched a power point presentation on Samuel’s exploration of Boston in social studies. They got a new elf this week. His name is Chip Blizzard. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class enjoyed decorating their classroom and working on Christmas activities this week.  The students have begun data management units in math class. They are enjoying gym classes outside this week with all the fresh snow. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class participated in a skills showcase on Wednesday to show the other students in the school what they did in St.  John’s.  The Canadian History 1201 students are continuing to work on their World War One simulation activity. The grade 9, 10 and 12 students participated in a Go Championship in class last week. Class champions were Cameron Peddle, Rebekah Calbert and Ryan Miller.

This week we kicked off an Allergy Aware Food Drive for the Christmas season. Each classroom is responsible for bringing in a food item that does not contain a particular allergen, such as egg, milk, peanut, mustard, etc.

Our students and classes are busily preparing for our annual Christmas concert. This year our concert is being hosted on Tuesday, December 13 at 7:00 pm. 

The Student Leadership Council has begun their annual Stockings for Seniors and Firefighter’s Toy Drive collections for the Christmas season. Donation boxes are located in each classroom.

The junior kindergarten classes completed their Helping Hands Project on Wednesday. They would like to thank everyone for their generous donations! They collected 19 bags of new and used winter items for the people in need in our community. 

Our Intermediate Skills Challenge teams were very successful in St. John’s last weekend. Our Wind Turbine team of Madison Noel and Daniel Olvera received gold medals. Also, our junior hairstyling team of Cheyenne Bursey and Kori Noel received silver medals. Our IHMS Team #1 called “TechRiders” received the third place overall for their research project on the horse saddle. Members of the team included: Mohamed Al-Zubaidy, Jacob Bursey, Simon Boitsefski, Clare Coleman, Heather Cooper, Marcus Gallant, Carly Johannesen, Alessandra LeBlanc, Arabella LeBlanc and Emily Payne. The IHMS Team #2 called “Roaring Robos” received second place overall for Program and Design. Team members included: Ryan Bennett, Makenzy Bishop, Myles Calbert, Max Chrappa, Cole Dumaresque, James Murphy, and Jack Richardson. Congratulations to all the students who competed in the event. 

Congratulations to Keira Clarke who was chosen as an honorary mention in the Provincial National Forestry Week Poster Contest.

Congratulations to Rebecca Janes who participated in the Agnes Thistle Invitational Figure Skating Competition in Corner Brook this past weekend. Rebecca received a silver certificate for solo.

Congratulations to Jordan Dicks-Park who competed in the Provincial Singles Bowling Competition this past weekend in St. John’s. Jordan received third place in the province. 

Congratulations to our students who performed in the Advent Concert hosted by the Graham Academy on Sunday evening. Simon Boitsefski, Grace Brake-Higgins, Keira Clarke, Clare Coleman, Luke Coleman, Heather Cooper , Carly Johannesen, Candance Johannesen, Ella Rashleigh, Alister MacDonnel and Lily Smallwood  were part of the show. 

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about Christmas and the letter “a”. The students are enjoying their time outdoors in the fresh snow. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about how snow is made. They are learning about the life cycle of the chick in science and are working on the letter “j”. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is learning about the water cycle, snow and ice. They have also having fun discovering more French words related to Christmas. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is learning about Advent in religion class. They were very excited to lead the First Advent celebration this week. They are writing friendly letters to Santa today. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class began a new math unit. They have been really busy writing fun addition stories. They are discussing the first Christmas and made manger scenes. With their friends in grade two, they have started to brainstorm ideas for a class Christmas story. 

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is excited to celebrate a couple birthdays coming up this month along with baby Jesus. They have been trying to make clouds in science class and have tried two different ways. They have one more way to test. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class is learning French vocabulary for the theme of Christmas. They also started learning about measurements in math. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is writing letters to Santa in French. They are working hard with the French choir in preparation for the Christmas concert. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is watching their plants grow in their Little Green Thumbs Garden. They have begun their research for their heritage posters. In math they are working on number sense up to 1,000.

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class learned about the explorers:  Cartier, De Champlain and Hearne. They also examined a rock collection and discussed the properties of each rock. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is working on Heritage Posters and writing about the meaning of home. The grade five students are learning about Nubia in social studies and the grade six students are creating rhyming poems about school in language arts class. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class had an excellent time at the Intermediate Skills Challenge. They would like to thank their coaches, teacher chaperones and bus driver for all the work they did to help ensure they had a successful trip. This week the class is creating posters for the Heritage Month. The grade seven and eight students are rapping about grammar and the senior high students are learning about artificial intelligence and how to play the game “Go” in language arts.

The grade one classes are happy to report that packed a record breaking 119 boxes for Operation Christmas Child. It was the highest number of boxes they ever completed. Thank you to our students and families for their generous donations. 

Congratulations to Simon Boitsefski, Clare Coleman, and Heather Cooper, grade six students who represented our school at the annual David Elliot Memorial Peace Week Speak Off on Tuesday evening.

Our grade six robotics team, TechRiders, visited Cache Rapids Stables in Rediville on Sunday to learn about the Western Saddle and how to properly fit a saddle. The class had a great time meeting the horses, staff, and even had the opportunity to ride a horse. Thank you to Cache Rapids Stables and Mme. Moss for hosting the students.

Mr. Bernie Bromley from Department of Wildlife visited the grade seven and eight robotics team, Raging Robos, this week to talk about their project about how to help moose and other large animals that accidentally wander into city limits. The students are preparing a project to present in St. John’s on how to help these animals. 

We would like to wish good luck to our students who are in St. John’s this weekend for the Intermediate Skills Challenge. The students are taking part in a number of events and competitions on Saturday hosted by Skills Canada. 

The junior kindergarten classes are continuing to collect for their project, Helping Hands. They are collecting warm winter clothing for all ages. They are looking for coats, mittens, gloves, and socks. They would like to thank everyone for their generous donations!

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning different ways to paint. This week they painted with potatoes and q-tips. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is learning about life cycles in science. In language arts they are working on the letter “b”. In math they are working with numbers 1-10. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is working with triangles and pyramids, discovering volumes. They are also learning more French sentences, like: “Il-Elle”, “est”, “sur la chaise”, “sous la table”, “malade” and more.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is celebrating Peace Week. They are learning about needs and wants in social studies. They are learning about more and less in math class. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class made collages for the five senses for the introduction of their new science unit, they made snowmen and discussed warm and cool colours. They are working on writing postcards as a part of their social studies program. 

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class was working hard on activities for peace week. They displayed pictures about “What Peace Looks Like” outside their classroom. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class learned how to use the English and French Dictionary to search, define and translate words. They also learned about masculine and feminine words. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is engaging in a creative independent reading program as well as working on passé composéand imparfair verb tenses. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is learning about mindfulness in health class. They are excited to share that they started their Little Green Thumbs garden this week. They are excited to watch their plants grow. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class was busy learning about the rock cycle and discussing the mysteries of Bermuda Triangle. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had a very busy week. On Tuesday they had a class ice cream party. This was a prize for winning the school contest for the most batteries collected per student in the Eco Kids Battery Busters contest.  The grade six students are attending the Intermediate Skills Challenge in St. John’s. Their team “TechRiders”, is competing in the First Lego League Robotics event. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class are in St. John’s today for the Intermediate Skills Challenge. The students are touring The Rooms and the Basilica today. Their competition will take place on Saturday at the College of the North Atlantic.

Lion’s Roar

Our school collected 450 pounds of batteries for the Eco Kids Battery Buster Contest. Congratulations to everyone on a great job. The class who collected the most batteries was Mrs. George’s grade one class who collected 33 kg! The class who collected the most batteries per student was Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class who collected 29 kg of batteries. Both classes have won a class ice cream party!

Operation Christmas Child officially ended on Thursday. We would like to thank everyone for their generous donations to this cause.

 Ms. Sanchita Chakraborty, a Diversity Training Officer with the Association for New Canadians, presented to the grade nine to Level Three students on the Syrian refugee crisis and the process for Private Refugee Sponsorship program on Thursday morning.  The class has been learning about Syria in language arts class and discussing the impact the conflict is having on the people in Syria. 

The afterschool Mauy Thai program for grade six to level three students resumed this week. It is taking place on Tuesday from 3:45-5:00 pm and Friday from 3:00-4:00 pm.

Today we are celebrating Mickey Mouse’s birthday with a Disney theme day! Happy Birthday, Mickey Mouse!

The Student Council will be selling hoodies until Friday, December 2^nd.  The navy hoodie will include the school’s crest and student’s name for a cost of $55.00. Youth and adult samples are available at the main office.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are beginning songs for the Christmas concert and working on Christmas crafts. The classes would like to welcome Danielle Callahan, Megan Campbell and Rebecca Boyd, three ECE students, to their program. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class learned about needs and wants in social studies this week. They have transplanted the vegetables in the Little Green Thumbs Garden. They are excited to celebrate Mickey’s birthday today with a Disney Theme. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is exploring and comparing sizes (tall, medium and small). They also discovered where books come from. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class was busy this week packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. They are grouping numbers and estimating in math. They are learning about their growing bodies in health class. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class has been as busy as Santa’s Elves. They have been packaging up boxes for Operation Christmas Child which concluded this week on Thursday. They feel very special to be able to help others and give them a nice Christmas. This week they started a new science unit on their five senses.  

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is happy to finish their unit on water and are planning a science experiment. They are going to make their own clouds!

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class is started a new unit in science about how animals change as they grow. They really enjoyed singing “Enfant de Paix at the Remembrance Day assembly.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is working on a unit on Friendship. The grade five and six classes are finishing their grammar unit. The grade five students shared their Remembrance Day essays with their class this week. The grade six students are working on their project presentation for the Skills Challenge. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has started to learn about inferences in language arts. The students have made their own investigator briefcases (CSI cases) to help them solve four different crime cases. They will use inference to help solve these cases and find the culprits. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class learnt about the importance of Remembrance Day. They read “In Flander’s Fields”, wrote an essay in language arts class and created posters in art. They also learned about the properties of minerals in science and more about John Cabot in social studies. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class completed their Remembrance Day essays and posters this week. The grade five students are studying multiplication in math and learning about Nubia in social studies. The grade six students are continuing their Paper Plane Olympics event and writing speeches for the YMCA Peace Week Speak-Off. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class is preparing for the Intermediate Skills Challenge. The students leave next Thursday morning for their trip. They have also completed their art project and submitted their entries for the Eco Kids Battery Buster Contest.

Grade 5/6 News Article - Lion’s Roar

This week is Waste Reduction Week. We started off the week with a water theme day to raise awareness of water waste. Our activities included upcying day, litter free lunches and paperless day. In addition, this week we are collecting used batteries for the Battery Busters Contest. The Student Leadership Council threw a challenge out to the class who collected the most batteries per student. The winning class will receive a class ice cream party. Stay tuned for the results next week!

On Tuesday morning our students enjoyed a performance by Debut Atlantic’s touring artist. Cheng²  Duo. Silvie and Bryan Cheng performed a concert of piano and cello music for our classes. We would like to thank Mr. David Smallwood from the Corner Brook Rotary Arts Centre for arranging this amazing concert for our school.

Our cross country running team participated in the Regional Cross Country Running Races held in Kippens on Tuesday afternoon. Congratulations to our runners. Thank you to Mr. Drew Nadon and Mr. Ryley Nadon for accompanying the team. The team also participated in the J.J. Curling meet on Wednesday afternoon. 

Also on Tuesday evening, Arista White participated in a Poetry Slam at the Corner Brook Public Library. Arista read her original poem, “What Was Lost”.

Our students and staff participated in the Janeway Pajama-rama on Thursday. Students and staff wore their pajamas to school and enjoyed a movie in the afternoon. The Student Leadership Council sold bags of chips, candy, and juice boxes for the movie. 

Our school was visited by members of the Corner Brook Fire Department this week. The fire fighters presented prizes to students in our school who won awards in the City of Corner Brook Fire Prevention Week. Congratulations to Oliver Carey- MacDonald who won the primary random poster draw, Lily Smallwood who won the primary colour poster contest, and Keira Clarke who won the grades 4-6 slogan contest.  Lily and Keira’s classes enjoyed a pizza party on Tuesday as part of their prize packages. Oliver won a motorized fire truck and Keira’s slogan will appear on a City of Corner Brook Fire Truck.

Tomorrow our school is hosting the Western Region Invitational Robotics Competition. We are welcoming schools from across the western region of the province. Participating schools include: Our Lady of Mercy, Viking Trail Academy, Jakeman All Grade, Lourdes Elementary, Holy Cross All Grade, White Hills Academy and Immaculate Heart of Mary School. Students and teachers will spend the morning learning about First Lego League Robotics and will then participate in a robot challenge activity in the afternoon. The event is open to the public for viewing beginning at 2 pm. 

We would like to thank Stella Michel and helpers who delivered a 12 month 12 miracle donation to our breakfast program.  The donation included $145 in Coleman’s gift cards and many breakfast food items.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about waste reduction and about conserving water this week. They are also preparing songs with Mr. Graham for the Remembrance Day Assembly.

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class is talking about Chenille, a caterpillar who is afraid of the dark. They are also talking about being afraid of the dark. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class learned an awesome Halloween poem this week. They are learning about the seasons in science class. They really enjoyed their guided imagery session in Religion class where they imaged what life was like in Jesus’ time. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class harvested tomatoes, basil, onion, peppers and cucumber from the greenhouse. They made a delicious pasta with the vegetables. They are learning about representing numbers on a ten frame and how to show one or two more or less than. They are also learning some Halloween vocabulary and reading a Halloween book. 

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is working on a personal water action goal to help conserve water. They are also learning about the water cycle in science. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class is developing fall and Halloween vocabulary. The students enjoyed taking part in the classical music concert on Tuesday. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is working on the parts of speech in French. They are writing spooky French Halloween stories. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class has started division in math class. For art they have been studying and learning about still life in art. They drew a still life of their class penguin. They have also started a draft of their Remembrance Day posters. The students are very excited to produce these posters. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class celebrated Christopher Columbus Day by learning all about the famous explorer. They learnt that he discovered America; however, he was not the first explorer to do this. Leif Erikson was the first explorer to discover America. The fire department also visited the school for a fire drill. It was a very exciting week.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class enjoyed a pizza party on Tuesday provided by the City of Corner Brook Fire Department. The party was a prize awarded to the class for Keira Clarke’s winning slogan for Fire Prevention Week. The grade five students are reading a book called “Rapunzel: The one with all the Hair” in language arts. The grade six students have begun building their robotics field kit.  They are very excited about the Western Region Invitational Robotics Competition being held at our school tomorrow.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class had a presentation from Mr. Sean Richardson about his cross Canada bike ride to help raise awareness for 22 Veterans. Students are preparing for the second annual Western Region Invitational Robotics Competition being held at our school on Saturday. They would like to extend congratulations to Arista White who participated in a Poetry Slam at the Corner Brook Public Library on Tuesday evening.

Grade 5/6 News Article

Our school celebrated Thanksgiving Day on Friday with a meal with our school family. We would like to thank the Quality Inn for preparing the meal, Ms. Cindy Kawja for accompanying our junior kindergarten and grade three and four choirs, the grade one and two French classes for their performance, and our parents and grandparents who served dinner. 

Ms. Ruth Brewer, representing the Bay of Islands Food Bank, with students Heather Cooper, Mohamed Al-Zubaidy and Reyd Ward. Students and staff collected items to donate to the food bank for Thanksgiving. 

This week is fire safety week. Our classes are learning about fire safety and practicing a school fire drill. On Wednesday afternoon members of the Corner Brook Fire Department visited our school for a practice fire drill. 

Students in grades three to six have been participating in basketball skills development clinics with Mr. Ryley, Mr. Drew and Mrs. Bishop.

Our running team participated in the St. Gerard’s running meet on Wednesday afternoon at Margaret Bowater Park. Congratulations to our runners on a great race. 

We would like to thank our families for their generous donation to the Western Regional Memorial Hospital Foundation. We have collected a total of $637.35.

The junior kindergarten classes have begun a project called “Helping Hands”. They are collecting warm clothing for those less fortunate. This includes hats, boots, socks, mittens, coats and snow pants of all sizes and for all ages. 

Additionally, we are collecting for “Kicks for Kids Shoe Drive”. The focus for this drive is athletic shoes; however, all footwear will be accepted. All footwear will be donated to Vine Place. We are collecting donations until Friday, October 14th. 

We are also collecting batteries for an upcoming battery recycling contest.

We would like to extend our condolences to Bishop Hundt and his family on the passing of his father this week. 

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to our Cross Country Running Team who participated in the C.C. Loughlin race last week. In the grade four boys category we had: Carter Bromley, Jacob Blackwood, Luke Coleman, Noah Colbourne, Jacob Cull, Noah Evans, Oscar George, Matthew Kemp and James Lao. In the grade four girls category we had: Sarah Buckingham, Molly George, Kate Murphy, Alyssa Power, and Brooke Watton. In grade five girls category we had: Rebecca Janes, Isabelle Mercier, Rosemary Owolabi., Trinity Rouse, and Reyd Ward. In grade six girls category Heather Cooper represented our school. Carter Bromley received first place in grade four boys with Luke Coleman also placing in the top ten. In grade four girls, Kate Murphy and Molly George placed in the top ten. Heather Cooper placed in the top five in the grade six girls category. Congratulations to all our runners on an excellent running meet. 

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about fire safety. The class had local firemen visit them on Thursday to teach them about how to be fire safe.

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is working on the letter “L” and ABC patterns in math. They are continuing their exploration of living and non-living things in science. 

Mme. Baugé’s Kindergarten French Immersion class would like to thank Mrs. Hamlyn who offered a tree planting session to their class last Thursday. They really enjoyed their Thanksgiving Day dinner. This week, they are learning new expressions about the weather and a new song. They are learning about different shapes in math and vocabulary for a variety of fruit in Health. They are making une surprise for Mme. Baugé. 

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is really excited about incorporating a Halloween theme into all of their learning. They are enjoying their new math unit on representing numbers to 20. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is discussing the four seasons in science. They are talking about how seasons cause changes in the world around them. The students planted some cilantro this week. When it is ready they will harvest the peppers and tomatoes with it to make salsa. 

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class has been busy this week working on their math and writing in language arts.  They enjoyed the Thanksgiving Day dinner on Friday. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class really enjoyed taking part in the Thanksgiving Day dinner last week. 

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is finding creative ways to find French verbs and practice their French vocabulary. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is continuing to learn about soil in science. They are looking at the concept of division along with their multiplication. They have been learning about empathy. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class collected non-perishable food for the Thanksgiving Food Drive last week. They participated in a fire drill on Tuesday and celebrated Thanksgiving at a special lunch held in the gym on Friday. They learnt more about the explorer Christopher Columbus and wrote about their science experiments on rocks using the Scientific Method.

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class had their first math test of the year on Thursday. The students began new strategy units in language arts this week. The grade five students are working on making connections and the grade six students are inferring. The grade six students are working on their project and robot missions for the Intermediate Skills Challenge. 

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class is busy preparing for the Western Region Robotics Competition on October 22. Our school is hosting the event. The class is involved with the planning and preparation. They are also starting a new art project this week.

School will be closed for all students on Friday, October 21 for teacher and staff professional development. 

Our school will host the Western Region Robotics Invitational Competition for intermediate schools in the western region on Saturday, October 22.

Grade 5/6 News Article: Lion’s Roar

This was a very busy week at IHMS. Today we are celebrating medical theme day to raise money for the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Foundation Radio-thon. Students and teachers are dressed in medical professional and patient clothing.

Our school has begun collecting for our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Boxes for food donations are located in each classroom. Thank you to our families for their donations. Vegetable orders are due today. Vegetables will arrive before thanksgiving. 

Our cross country running team had their first meet on Wednesday at Jubilee Field. Congratulations to the team on their race. The team had over 20 students participate in the season opening race. 

Wednesday was National Milk Day. Students and staff enjoyed free milk compliments of the School Milk Foundation.

We would like to congratulate our grade five students who represented IHMS in the Agri-Foods and Garden Show Spelling Bee last Friday evening. Our spellers included: Jenna Cammie, Keira Clarke, Rebecca Janes and Reyd Ward. Congratulations to Jenna Cammie who was selected as the overall winner. All students received a prize for being a part in the spelling bee. 

Stars of the Week

Congratulations to members of the Graham Academy who performed with the Swinging Belles on Sunday in Cow Head. Our students included:  Grace Brake-Higgins, Sarah Buckingham, Simon Boitsefski, Keira Clarke, Luke Coleman, Heather Cooper, Candace Johannesen, Carly Johannesen, Alister MacDonnell, and Ella Rashleigh. The students participated in a workshop on song writing and dance in addition to their performance with the band. 

Congratulations to Simon Boitsefski who is a gold medalist for the Royal Conservatory of Music. He will be presented his award on October 29.

Class News

The junior kindergarten classes are learning about the season fall. They did an experiment about why leaves change colour. They are very excited about medical theme day today. 

Mrs. Hodder’s Kindergarten English class is doing AB patterns in math. In language arts and science they are learning about the seasons and fall.

The Kindergarten French Immersion class has been busy learning about living (vivant) and non living (non vivant) things in science, as well as shapes and sizes in math. They have been working hard practicing their printing. They would like to wish Haylee Kelly une très bonne fête!

Mrs. George’s grade one English class is writing about fall this week and making lovely fall crafts. They are learning about belonging in Religion class and they each made family crests. 

Mme. Ryan’s grade one French Immersion class is finishing up their patterning unit this week. They have been discussing healthy habits in their health program. They cultivated some produce from the greenhouse and enjoyed a yummy salad with Mme. Moss’s class. They love their greenhouse buddies. 

French Immersion students, Katie Hancock, Noor Altaee, and Charlie Hynes, and enjoy vegetables they cultivated in the greenhouse. 

Ms. Kane’s grade two English class is drafting a letter to Mayor Pender at City Hall to let him know about their proposal to rid stores in Corner brook of plastic bags. The class is very concerned about the impact they have on our environment. 

Mme. Howlett’s grade two French Immersion class had a great week. They are very excited to be dressed up today for medical theme day.

Mme. Moss’ grade three, four, five and six French Immersion class is starting the Daily 5 stations in French. 

Mrs. Bishop’s grade three class is learning how to write an essay this week. The class is learning how to format their essays and use proofreading marks. In math they are studying multiplication and grouping. 

Mrs. Passmoor’s grade four class celebrated forestry week last week by visiting Margaret Bowater Park and learning about forest safety. They also learned how to plant trees and prevent forest fires. A good time was had by all. 

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class was excited to take part in the Student Leadership Council election this week. The students also wrote essays for Foster Families Association month. The grade six students are learning about different forces in science. The grade five students are learning about cultures.

Mr. Drew Nadon’s junior high to level three class has begun their preparation for the Western Region Robotics Competition coming up on October 22 at our school.
