Grade 5 girls' basketball team who won silver medals last weekend in the Western Provincial Tournament. Last Friday we had a pep rally for our grade 5 girls’ basketball team for the Western Provincials. The tournament was hosted by hour school. Thank you to Mr. Gillard who set up the sound system, and the Claire Reynolds and Jenna Yetman for emceeing. Also on Friday, the school choir sang at the opening of the Winter Carnival. This was led by Mr. Graham.
Also last week on Thursday we had our annual Winter Carnival fun day. Thank you to Mr. Gillard and the grade 7 to level 1 students for organizing the activities. We also worked on a snow sculpture of Mickey Mouse for the snow sculpture contest.
On Monday we had a holiday for Winter Carnival.
On Tuesday we had a pancake breakfast for Shrove Tuesday. Thank you to the teachers for making and serving the pancakes. They were yummy!
On Wednesday we went to a special mass for Ash Wednesday and in the afternoon we had our mid-year awards assembly for perfect attendance, perfect green team attendance and honours and distinction for grade 7 to level 1.
Some of our students took part in the Winter Carnival spelling bee on Thursday night at St. Gerard’s School. Congratulations to Front: Clara Ryan, Gina Spence, Alex Williams, Olivia Park, Back: Hannah Sparkes and Maria Reynolds with Mrs. McCarthy.

Today our grade 6 girls’ basketball team will be playing in the Grade 6 Western Provincial Tournament at St. Gerard’s.  The tournament officially started on Wednesday.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to the grade 5 girls’ basketball team who won silver medals in the western provincial tournament last weekend. They lost 22-19 against Sacred Heart School in the championship game.  Also, Olivia Park, Alex Williams and Brooklynn Companion all received player of the game awards. Olivia Park and Brooklynn Companion won the Skills Competition and Alex Williams received the award for Most Sportsmanlike. Thank you to Mr. Whelan who coached the team and to all the parents and students who helped with the tournament.

Congratulations to Jenna Yetman who took part in a speak off last week at the Lion’s club.

Congratulations to Abigail Woodford and her family who won the trip with Marine Atlantic at the Winter Carnival opening at the park.

Congratulations to Olivia Park, Caylie Blake, Brooklynn Companion and Anna Brake who received silver medals in the elementary category at the Provincial Synchro Skating Championship last weekend.  Kennedi Boland, Abigail Companion, and Bethany Whelan performed an exhibition skate as members of the Silver Blades Silver Shadows Novice Team.
Over the weekend Patrick Davis and Syndee Hynes took part in the Provincial Cross Country Skiing Championships.  Sydnee placed third in Atom girls 1 km race and Patrick placed second in the Juvenile Boys 7.5 km and third place in the Juvenile Boys 8 km sprint.
 

From The Classrooms
  

The junior kindergarten classes are learning all about me, doing finger painting and self portraits.

Mlle. Wight’s Kindergarten French Immersion class enjoyed the long weekend. They are working on addition in math.

Ms. Morrall’s Kindergarten English class is learning about the letter “q”. They are also talking about families. They are making Lenten promises.

Ms. Dwyer’s Kindergarten English class is working on the letter “q”. They are also learning about lent and discussing their families.

Mme. Perez-Diaz’s grade one French Immersion class is learning about different shapes in art. They are learning how to skip count by 2, 5, and 10 up to 100. They are doing lots of story re-telling in simple sentences.

Mrs. George’s grade one English class are learning about Lent. They are learning about grouping sets in math. They are very excited about Arabella and Alessandra’s mom who is coming in to read to them today.


Ms. Park’s grade two class is starting measuring in math. In science they are learning about changing direction.

Ms. Bennett’s grade three and four class is very busy working on challenges for the classroom energy diet challenge. They are doing things like making green tips, eco-friendly posters and so much more!

Mrs. McCarthy’s grade five and six class is learning how to convert fractions and decimals in math and made a birthday card for the Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Club. The grade 5 and 6 class is skiing at Marble Mountain today with Mr. Gillard and Mr. Hiscock.

Mr. Hancock’s junior high and level 1 class is working hard on their bridges. Mr. Carl King visited them on Wednesday afternoon to office some advice and guidance on their designs. This week they began rehearsals for the drama festival. They welcome Sarah Keeping to their class this week.  The grade 7 class prepared rants and performed them for the class.
 

Coming Up

Tuesday night is our Book Fair Family event from 6:30-8:30 pm.  Students will visit the fair with their classes on Wednesday.

Wednesday is “Leap Day” with a healthy living commotion at lunch. It is also a casual day in aid of the Laubach Literacy.
