IHMS Teacher vs. Student soccer game last week for National Sports Week.

The school breakfast program started on Monday. We are so happy to see all the students enjoying a yummy breakfast.

The Student Leadership Council elections began on Monday. Carla du Toit and Sarah Yetman have been elected Co-Presidents. The Vice-President is Sarah Keeping. Congratulations to you all.

The grade five and six class has participated in a forestry day at Margaret Bowater Park on Monday. Thank you to Mrs. Reynolds, Mrs. McCarthy, Mr. Hancock, and Mrs. King who drove the students. This event was for National Forestry week. Thank you for a great time.

The soccer intramurals has started and everybody seems to love soccer.

There was a curriculum night for parents on Thursday night. Also, Thursday was our school’s eleventh birthday celebration and theme day. Everyone dressed up for the theme 11. The grade 5 and 6 class wrote an acrostic poem to celebrate and everyone had cupcakes and milk.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten classes are learning the letter A and the number 1. They went on a nature walk on Wednesday. They are also excited about their new water table.

The Kindergarten class is learning about sorting in math. They are also learning about family in social studies.

The French Immersion Kindergarten class is learning songs in French. They are learning how to write their letters and how to count in French.

The grade one class is learning about patterns in math and made pattern necklaces. They had their first spelling test this week. They loved the theme day so much.

The grade two class is learning about time lines. They went on a trip to Colemans. They enjoyed the soccer games this week. They welcome, Madison Copp a new student to their class.

The grade three and four class is learning about Terry Fox. They are learning about patterns in math and birthdays in French. They went on a nutrition tour at Colemans last Friday. They really enjoyed their loot bags.

The grade five and six class had a great time on their field trip. They are very excited to welcome the new mini-reporters. The new grade five class is writing the newspaper articles and the grade six’s are acting as leaders. Great job everyone!

The junior high class are having a math test next week. They are busy preparing for the Skills Canada Intermediate Challenge in November. They are excited to explore new skill areas like job interview skills, workplace safety, job skill demonstration and prepared speech.

Coming Up

The Terry Fox walk is on September 30th. We are accepting open donations.

Vegetable orders are due October 1st.

Welcome back students and families. We hope you are all ready to enjoy a new year of school. We have some new teachers to welcome to our school this year. Mrs. Tina Arklie and Ms. Lana King both work with our Junior Kindergarten students. As well, Mrs. Barbara Dicks is now working full time with the Junior Kindergarten classes. Mme. Noseworthy is our new French Immersion Kindergarten teacher and her intern is Mlle. Nikki Robertson. Also, Mr. Greg Taaffe is teaching grades 3 to 9 math.

Over the summer Mr. Kennedy did a lot of work getting our school ready for September. He did a very good job! We have a new band room, a new French immersion kindergarten room, a new office and a new staff room. Also, thank you to Ms. Heather Sweetapple who worked in our office helping Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. King over the summer.

Mrs. Agnes Neville will be running our school lunch program this year. Thank you for the yummy cinnamon rolls she made for everyone last week.

Last Friday we had our school opening mass. Thank you to Bishop Crosby and Monsignor Gale who made it extra special. Also thank you to Mr. Graham for playing the organ.

The school was closed on Monday because there was no water. We hope you enjoyed your extra holiday!

On Tuesday we had a sports theme day and we had a banner presentation ceremony for a Platinum Award for Quality Physical Education we got last year. Congratulations to Ms. Dutton for all her hard work. We also had a students vs. staff soccer game and we all played awesome. Soccer intramurals has begun and will run every Tuesday Thursday during September.

This week we have a new student intern in our office named Kayla Simmonds who will be with our school for 26 weeks.

Stars of the Week

Welcome back to Carla du Toit and Jenna Yetman who represented our school in Washington at the People to People Leadership Conference.

Patrick Davis traveled to St. John’s this weekend to participate in the Invitational Pee Wee Tournament. His team played very well.

Congratulations to Aaron Hancock who won the school draw from Cycle Solutions.

Class News

The Junior Kindergarten classes are learning about apples. They are excited to be in school for the first time.

The Kindergarten class is learning the classroom rules and all about patterns. They welcome to our school four new students: Makayla Ianni, Summer Ingram, William O’Flaherty, and Heather Cooper.

The French Immersion Kindergarten class is enjoying learning all kinds of French words and singing songs with Mme Noseworthy and Mlle. Robertson. The class welcomes new students Lauren Davis and Ben Hamilton.

The grade one class is welcoming two new students to their class Michael Sheppard and Noah Colbourne. They are learning about apples and will soon have a taste test.

The grade two class welcomes Chole Colbourne to their class. They are learning about patterns in math.

The grade three and four class is learning about patterns in math and writing about themselves in language arts. They really enjoyed the soccer game. They have three new students this year Cheyenne Bursey, Hailey Colbourne and Keagan Sheppard.

The grade five and six class got a new cage for their gerbil Lunch called Habitrail Suite. They are learning about collages and made one in art about their favourite season. They welcome to their class this year William Murphy-Goodridge and Bethany Whelan.

The Junior High class has a new student named Zubia Mahmood. They are learning about the geography of Canada and latitude and longitude in social studies. In enrichment they are working on teambuilding in groups. On Wednesday they worked together to build something to protect an egg from breaking when it is dropped.

Coming Up

Cafeteria services begin on Monday. After school program and breakfast program also start on Monday.

Student Leadership Council elections begin next week.

Thursday, September 23 is our curriculum night.

Junior Kindergarten: We have once again expanded our Junior Kindergarten Program to forty children. Our program consists of 3 classes; two classes of 16 and one class of 8.

French Immersion: This year is the first year for our school to facilitate French Immersion. Our French Immersion Class is located on the Main level next to the Staff Room.

Offices: Our offices and Staff Room have located to the main level. We hope the new location of our offices proves to be more accessible and convenient for our families.

Summer Maintenance: Our maintenance over the summer months was quite extensive. All classrooms and the gymnasium were painted, cleaned thoroughly and all floors were stripped and waxed. We are very committed to providing our students an environment which is conducive to learning.

Band Room: Our Band Room is now located on the top floor. It is in the former upstairs Lunch Room.

Cafeteria Services: Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will eat in the Cafeteria which is located on the main level. The Junior High Students have the option of eating in their classroom or in the cafeteria. The Junior Kindergarten children will eat in their classroom. All students will be able to avail of services from the cafeteria.

Until the cafeteria services begin, the school will sell pizza on Friday and hot dogs on Monday. More information will follow.

Allergies: Our school is a peanut and scent free school due to the sensitivities of some of our students and staff.

School Calendar: The monthly calendar is a very important communication tool that will outline the specific month’s events. Please keep this calendar in a highly visible area as we would not want your child (children) nor you to miss any events. The September calendar will be distributed to your child on Tuesday, September 7th ( Kindergarten to Grade 9) and on Wednesday, September 8th (Junior Kindergarten Classes).

Monthly Staff Meetings: Our Monthly Staff Meetings will take place this year at the end of the school day. Therefore, there will be no interruption to the regular school day nor to the After-school Program.

Important Dates:

September 7th: 1:00 p.m. Orientation Session in our Gymnasium for K-9 Students

September 8th: 12:30 p.m. Orientation Session in our gymnasium for the JK Classes

September 10th: Parents, family members and friends are invited to join us at our School

The End Of An Amazing Year!

Last weekend was the Provincial Herseys Track and Field Meet in Mount Pearl. Congratulations to Patrick Davis and Brayden Ryan who represented our school. Also thank you to Ms. Dutton who drove to St. John’s to cheer on our school.

On Monday there was a spelling bee for grades 3 to 9 students. Winners we’re buzzing about are Alexandra Williams, Maria Reynolds, Jenna Yetman, and Sarah Keeping. Congratulations to all the S-P-E-L-L-E-R-S!

Our final school breakfast was held on Tuesday morning. We enjoyed homemade French toast, and waffles. Thank you to Ms. Agnes McCarthy, Mrs. McCarthy and Mrs. King for cooking for us! Also Tuesday was sports day. It was a lot of fun. Thank you to Ms. Dutton and the junior high class who organized everything.

We had a year end mass and assembly on Wednesday morning. Both the band and choirs performed, and there was a slideshow of pictures prepared by the junior high class. Thank you to Mr. Reynolds for the beautiful program and certificates for each student.

Thank you to all the volunteers this past year. To show our appreciation there was a volunteer luncheon on Thursday.

Teachers are finished school today after two days of final clean up and paperwork. See you in September.

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are happy with the outcome of their birthday party for all JKs. They had lots of fun!

The kindergarten class made a spring book and had fun making them. Also they had fun making scrapbooks for the end of the year.

The grade one class enjoyed their teddy bear picnic and sports day on Tuesday. They made books for their classmates telling why they like them.

The grade two class enjoyed math games, robot making and the end of the year party.

The grade three and four class loved the spelling bee on Monday and doing class inventory.

The grade five and six class enjoyed a lunch from Subway and ice cream cake by Jasmine’s mom, Janice Penney. They also loved the spelling bee and sports day.

The junior high class is enjoyed the awards ceremony which they helped to prepare. They also enjoyed sports day and are excited because it is summer break!

We will miss all our great readers. We hope to write you next year. Mini-reporters out (peace).

We Raised $466.36 For The Janeway Children's Foundation

Kindergarten class making their donations for the Janeway Children's Foundation last week. Collectively our school raised $466.36.

Last Friday we had a school track and field meet. Many students raced in a variety of categories including long jump and 500 m running. Congratulations to all who participated in the meet. The winners are invited to a track and field meet in Mount Pearl on June 20th.Good luck everyone! Thank you to the Junior High Class and Ms. Dutton for organizing the event.

Last Friday we also had the Cirque du Coeur (Circus of the Heart). The grade 5 and 6 class performed a circus act for all students that included hula hoops, cartwheels, pyramids, juggling and clowning. After the introduction students were taught how to do various circus activities by the grade 5 and 6 students. Thank you the grade 5 and 6 class and Ms. Dutton! Everyone had a lot fun. There were even students dressed up in funny costumes.

On Tuesday the grades 3 to 9 participated in the salmon release at Hughes Brook. It was very rainy and muddy, but everyone still had fun. Also on Tuesday was the Kindergarten graduation ceremony. The Kindergartens sang songs and recited the ABC’s of what they learned this year. Congratulations to you all.

Junior High exams took place this week. We’re sure everyone did well.

On Wednesday the primary students went on a field trip to the bowling alley. Their picnic had to be rescheduled because of the all the rain. They hope to have a Teddy Bear picnic on another day.

Yesterday the grade 5 and 6 class had a Celebration of Life service (funeral) for their class gerbil Recess who died over the weekend after an unpleasant accident. Thank you to all the students and staff members who attended the service. Also Thursday was formal day. It was nice to see everyone in their dresses and shirts and ties.

On Thursday the Du Toit family departed by Washington, DC, for the People to People Youth Leadership Conference. We would like to wish Carla a great trip.

Today is the last day for the lost and found table at the main entrance. All items will be packed up to be donated at the end of the day.

IHMS is welcoming a new teacher to our school Mr. Greg Taaffe for September 2010. Mr. Taaffe has a lot of experience in math, science, and technology. Also, beginning in September Ms. Nicole Robertson will be doing her internship in our kindergarten French immersion class with Mme Noseworthy.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Heresy Track and Field meet last Friday you are all stars of the week!

Congratulations to Carla du Toit and Jasmine Penney who are co-recipients of the Student of the Year Award. These awards were given out on Thursday because both girls are travelling to the People to People Youth Leadership Conference and will not be in school on June 23 for the awards assembly. Congratulations.

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes had a teddy bear picnic this week. They are finalizing their Father’s Day gifts and reviewing their letters and numbers. They are enjoying the last few days of the school year.

The kindergarten class enjoyed their graduation. They are learning about transportation in Social Studies.

The grade one class really enjoyed the bowling trip on Wednesday. They are super excited about the big party at Mrs. George’s house this weekend.

The grade two class had a guest speaker this week come and talk to them about wildlife. They loved the centre bowl trip.

The grade three and four class had their last spelling test on Monday. The grade three’s enjoyed their trip to centre bowl. This week Ms. Dutton threw them a class birthday party. There were cupcakes, streamers and they made toutons.

The grade five and six class said goodbye to a great friend and pet Recess. We will miss you. They are worked very hard on his funeral choosing, bible readings, hymns and personal messages. They are looking forward to the spelling bee on Monday.

The junior high class is finished their exams. They are busy preparing for the awards assembly on Wednesday. They are excited for summer break.

Coming Up
There is a spelling bee for grade 3 to 6 students on Monday. Students are asked to wear yellow and black. On Monday homeroom will be extended for school book return.

There is a school breakfast on Tuesday at 8:30 am and it will also be a sports day.

On Wednesday there will be a family mass at 9:00 am and the awards assembly will begin at 10:00 am. School closes on Wednesday ay 12:00.

The mini-reports are sad that Recess is gone. We’ll be back for one more week of news.

IHMS Holds First Annual Art Exhibition

Our Art Exhibition was a great success. There was a great variety of art from or very talented artists. Thank you to all students, families and staff for making this show a success. Thank you to grade 7 student Anri Vermooten for taking photographs during the show. The grade 5 and class won a pool rental for their perfect attendance at the art show. On Wednesday they enjoyed a morning of swimming at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College pool. Thank you to Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. du Toit for driving us to the pool.

Last week students donated artwork for the Relay for Life annual banquet. We sent many beautiful butterflies and rainbows to decorate the walls.

This week our school raised money for the Janeway Children’s Foundation. Thanks to our families and staff we raised $466.36!

From Tuesday to Thursday the grade 3 and 6 students wrote their math CRTs. They are now finished language and math CRTs.

Today is casual day. Each student and teacher brought in $1 in aid of Cirque du Coeur (Circus of the Heart). This afternoon we will be participating in circus style gym activities.

Our track and field meet is today. Top finishing runners will be invited to Mount Pearl for another track meet on June 20th.

The annual junior high retreat is today from 3 to 9 pm. The prayer group would like to wish Mrs. Coleman a happy birthday this week.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Faith Yates who won the 12-15 year old Junior Sport Female category in Cycle Solutions Mudslide race over the weekend.

Also, Noah Hynes, Tarik and Kaden Rodrigues all participated in a fun run over the weekend. Noah placed 3rd and Tarik placed 4th.

Congratulations to Keely Brothers who won a silver medal as part of a team last weekend for the Saltos Gymnastics Club at the Spring Provincials in Corner Brook.

Class News
The junior kindergarten class is reviewing the letter s. They are also making Father’s Day crafts.

The kindergarten class is getting ready for their graduation next week. They are writing stories in language arts.

The grade one class is learning about plants and animals in science and how to meet their needs. They are also starting to secret Father’s Day activities.

The grade two class is working on geometry in math. They really enjoy art and gym class. They enjoyed the art show and are looking forward to summer break.

The grade three and four class is learning about government in social studies ad re looking forward to the track and field meet today. Their class pet Nibbles got a new addition to her cage. It is a new home and tunnel system.

The grade five and six class had a great time swimming on Wednesday. They were very busy this week preparing he opening act for Cirque du Coeur this afternoon. They are also preparing for the end of year spelling bee.

The junior high class is studying really hard for exams and are excited for their retreat this evening. They are busy organizing the end of year assembly and slideshow.

Jr. Kindergarten Class Wins Dozens Of Books

Junior Kindergarten class with the new books they won from Scholastic Book Club. They won all the books in the book order for the month of May. Two large boxes of books were delivered to the class.

The 101 Dalmatian play was a great success. Thank you Mr. Graham and students for the work put into the show. Thank you to Mrs. Rollings for doing the make-up and Mr. Brothers for videotaping the play which is on sale from the office in aid of the breakfast program. Also thank you to Rogers Cable, and Gary Parsons for all their help. Mrs. Chris Brothers was the winner of the 50/50 draw. There was a bake sale organized by Mrs. Deckert, Marie Kennedy, and Imelda Sparkes. They even had dog bone cookies! Thank you!

On Friday we had a cast party. All the students and staff got to watch the entire play. We also enjoyed a Dalmatian cake and milk. All families received a cast poster thoughtfully designed by Mr. Reynolds. Also, all the students received a blue teddy bear for fundraising for the kids help phone. Thank you to Ms. Dutton for organizing the whole thing.

The grade 2 class had their first Holy Communion last Sunday. Family and friends placed wished and congratulations in a paper cup for each student. Congratulations to Noah Veitch, Clara Ryan, Olivia Gallant, Keely Brothers, and Bridgett Sparkes. Thank you to Mrs. Deckert, Mrs. George, Mrs. King and Mrs. McCarthy who helped with this special day.

On Monday night we had a picture party for the St. Pierre trip. Thank you to Mrs. King and Mr. Reynolds for preparing the party. We enjoyed looking at the pictures and eating pizza and dessert and Mrs. King’s house. Yum!

The grade 3 and 6 classes have finished their language CRTs. The math CRTs start next Tuesday.

Students in all classes thought up new names for the Corner Brook Triathlon which used to be called Kids of Steel this week.

The Junior Kindergarten class won a scholastic draw. They won all the books in the scholastic book order for May. Wow! That’s a lot of books!

The school had its first annual art exhibition yesterday. We have lots of talent in this school.

Ms. Megan Kennedy has completed her work placement. Thank you for all your support and help toward the school! We miss you.

This week Ms. Dutton held school try-outs for a track and field team. There will be a track and field meet on June 11 for our school.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Faith Yates who participated in the Cycle Solutions Mud Slide Cycling Race. Faith finished first in the female category and fourth overall.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in Dance Studio West production “Around the World”. These students are: Jasmine Penney, Carla du Toit, Nicola du Toit, Clara Ryan, Charlotte Sweetapple, and Rose MacLeod.

Congratulations to Alissa Rae Bellows, a former IHMS student, who was awarded a General Excellence Award at Corner Brook Regional High School’s awards assembly last Friday.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are working on the number 10 and Father’s Day crafts. They are very excited about the books their class won.

The Kindergarten class is learning about money in math, maps in social studies and was very happy with the art show.

The grade one class is working on projects for the art show and a unit on aboriginal people in social studies.

The grade two class is learning about 3-D shapes and watching the movie 101 Dalmatians.

The grade three and four class made thank you cards on Monday with the help of the grade 5’s for the parents who went to St. Pierre.

The grade 5 and 6 class is learning about income in social studies. The grade 6’s are happy to be finished their language CRT. They are working on improving their sentence structure.

The junior high class watched a movie for enrichment called “The End of the Line” about the world’s oceans. Saturday is World Ocean’s Day. They are shocked at how in danger of extinction the fish population is in. They are busy preparing for final exams.

Coming Up
Next Friday is casual day. We hope to see everybody in casual clothes. It is in support of Circe de Couer (Circus of the Heart).

Math CRTs begin June 9th. Good luck to everyone who will be participating.

School Play Was A Great Success!

We hope everyone enjoyed a nice long weekend. Now we are back and getting all the lowdown on everyone’s weekend.

The 101 Dalmatian play was a great success! Thank you to Mr. Graham, Mrs. McCarthy, Mr. Hancock, Mrs. Deckert, Mrs. Furlong, Mrs. Farrell and all the students and staff for all their hard work. Everyone did an exceptional job.

On Wednesday of this week students Jasmine Penney, Carla du Toit, Claire Reynolds and Mr. Graham were interviewed by CBC radio. The students also sang Kanine Krunchies for the radio and again for cable 9 TV.

Last week there was a draw for a big screen TV. Dave Pardy of Corner Brook was the lucky winner.

CRT’s began yesterday for grades 3 and 6. Good luck everyone and try your best.

Today is casual day! We are glad the musical is over and now we get to relax in our casual clothes today.

The school concert band is busy practicing pieces for our end of year awards assembly. They will play “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. The junior high enrichment class is busy organizing this assembly.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are started the number 10 and are making art pieces for the upcoming art show. Today they are saying goodbye to their CONA intern Sara Rozee. Thank you for all your help!

The Kindergarten class had a lot of fun during the musical. They are busy preparing to finish their kindergarten year.

The grade one class is learning about insects in science and worked really hard on the musical. They did great as Chihuahuas.

The grade two class worked really hard at the musical and really rocked the poodle parts. They are preparing for First Holy Communion this weekend.

The grade three and four class is happy about the outcome of the play and are continuing to learn about landscape in science.

The grade 5 and 6 class had a band test on Wednesday. They are working really hard on French letters about St. Pierre.

The junior high class have just completed a social studies unit on how Newfoundland was affected by WW2 and will be creating models and pictures.

Coming Up
The grade two first Holy Communion is this Sunday at All Hallows church at 10:30 am.

The school art show is June 3rd at 6:00 pm. All families are welcome to come check out our student’s talent.

A New Batch Of D.A.R.E. Program Graduates At IHMS

On Friday of last week Faith Yates (pictured above) was informed that she won the Mayor for a Day Essay Contest for Municipal Awareness Week. On Wednesday she was picked up by a fire truck at school and driven to the Mayor’s Office. She spent the day helping with a municipal barbeque, touring the city hall, attending a press conference and getting a ride in a police car. Exciting!

Last week we also celebrated World Catholic Education Day. Grade 2 students along with the grade 5 and 6 class made a school banner and grades 3-6 wrote letters to Bishop Crosby to tell him why our school is so special. Thank you to Mrs. McCarthy for organizing the activities.



Last Friday was the D.A.R.E. graduation. Congratulations to Faith Yates who won the D.A.R.E. essay award and Claire Reynolds and Jasmine Penny who won the penmanship award. Also Nicole Keeping won Daren the D.A.R.E. lion draw. Thank you to Constable Kelly, Constable Edwards, and Daren who taught this class to be drug free! Also thank you to our school D.A.R.E. sponsors the Elks Lodge and the Royal Purple Lodge.

On Monday evening Faith Yates, Sarah Keeping and Nicole Keeping attended a Mock City Council Meeting where they sat in council chambers and held a meeting with other six grade students from Corner Brook.

All this week Mr. Graham has been organizing musical practices for the big performance next week.

Yesterday the grade 5 and 6 students and then parents attended a D.A.R.E. presentation by Constable Kelly and Constable Edwards. The presentation was about what can happen to their bodies if they do make the choice to do drugs.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Yvette Coleman a graduate from IHMS who has been awarded a 58,000 dollar scholarship from Queen’s University. She has also won the provincial rotary festival for voice. Congratulations also to Mr. Graham our school’s music teacher who also teaches Yvette.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are working hard on the number 9. They are almost done their alphabet book. They are also making Chia dads for Father’s Day.

The grade one class is very excited to have heard back from one of their favorite authors, Mo Willems who writes the pigeon books! He sent them a letter, posters and a thank you card all the way from New York City. Lucky (pigeons)!

The grade two class is excited about the musical next week. They are enjoying nature walks in science class.

The grade three and four class finished their math booklet and is learning about magnets in science class and about landscaping in social studies.

The grade 5 and 6 class are started a new unit in social studies about global issues. Mrs. McCarthy gave the grade 5’s a million dollar bill each for their essays.

The junior high class went geocaching at the participark and Corner Brook stream trail on Tuesday. They are almost finished their sewing projects. They are working on novel posters in language class.

Coming Up
Next week is the musical, 101 Dalmations. On Wednesday there are two performances for local schools at 9:30 and 1:15. There is also a performance for schools on Thursday morning at 11:00. The main performance is at 7:00 pm on Thursday.

This weekend is Victoria Day weekend. Everyone enjoy the long weekend. We’ll see you on Tuesday. The mini-reporters are relaxing. We’ll be back with more news next week.

The Honorable Faith Yates Runs A Mock City Council Meeting

A Corner Brook youth got a taste of the mayor’s chair Monday evening, and she’s continuing her reign as mayor for a day today.

Faith Yates, a 12-year-old Grade 6 student at Immaculate Heart of Mary School presided over a mock council meeting at Corner Brook’s council chambers Monday evening.

She tapped the gavel to get the meeting underway while wearing the chain of office.

She and her six young councillors, all Grade 6 students at schools in the city, took part in a mock meeting before Mayor Neville Greeley and the Corner Brook council got down to business.

“My friends all said they wanted to sit in the mayor’s chair and put their feet up,” Faith said. “Unfortunately, I couldn’t put my feet up because I was on camera. It was fun.

“The chain was heavy. It was a bit different. I didn’t really want to put it on, but once it was on I felt special.”

She wanted to be mayor for a day so she could make sure some of the bad roads got paved, and she wants to see bike lanes around the city.

The young council consisted of Camille Thistle and John Bowles, of C.C. Loughlin Elementary School, Kristian Wheeler and Adam Critch, of St. Gerard’s Elementary School, along with Sarah Keeping and Nicole Keeping, of Immaculate Heart of Mary School.

Faith will be following the real mayor Greeley through Municipal Awareness Day today at city hall. A staff breakfast is slated for 8 a.m.

A barbecue starts at 11 a.m. with activities, displays and events continuing from there.
“There’s going to be tours of the city hall, a barbecue and I get to ride in a fire truck,” she said.

Greeley said the young mayor did a creditable job of being mayor for a meeting of a mock council.

Her essay on why she should be mayor for a day stood out. Her public speaking skills also impressed him.

“She’s got the world before her,” Greeley said. “She’s a young girl and I was just at the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduation Friday and she had the top essay in that, as well. She’s got a talent.”

IHMS's First French Immersion Class For September 2010

Say Cheese! This week the class photos and group photos were taken on Tuesday. Also the kindergarten graduation photos were taken.

This Sunday was Mother’s Day. We hope you all treated them really well.

On Monday Mrs. King went to the Teacher Job fair at Grenfell College to represent our school.

On Wednesday the September 2010 French Immersion Kindergarten class had an orientation session with their new teacher Madame Noseworthy.

The May Crowning celebration was yesterday. Mrs. Coleman and the prayer group did a very nice celebration for that special day. Also Thursday was World Catholic Education Day. We celebrated with a special school prayer of thanks for Catholic education and we did special writing and art activities to show our thankfulness for our school.

This afternoon is the grade 5 and 6 class D.A.R.E. graduation. Claire Reynolds and Faith Yates were interviewed by CBC radio this morning about the D.A.R.E. program.

Congratulations to Faith Yates who won the award for the best D.A.R.E. essay. She will read her essay at the graduation ceremony.

Congratulations go out to Mr. Gene Coleman, Chair of the Board and his wife, Janice on the birth of their new baby daughter.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to the girl’s soccer team who played in a tournament last weekend. They played really well. Thank you to Mrs. Dutton for getting the team ready and coaching them through the tournament.

Carla du Toit was the winner of the envelope design contest “Digging Up Our Past” for the Cupids celebration this summer. Her design will be featured on envelopes sold in Cupids. Also Anri Vermooten won the Indeavour Award for her whimsical drawing in the design contest. Great work!

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are working on the number “9” and spring crafts. They would like to say congratulations to Clare Coleman on her new baby sister.

The Kindergarten class is learning to count by 2’s and learning the days of the week. They are busy preparing for their kindergarten graduation.

The Grade 1 class is learning about the plant parts and planting vegetable and flower seeds in science class. They are learning about fishing and trawling in social studies.

The grade 2 class is excited for the musical. They are learning about birds this week.

The grade 3’s are finishing a novel study on “Lost and Found” and the grade 4’s are working on a novel study on “Ticket to Curlew”. They are busy with all their subjects and looking after nibbles.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is learning about African music in Social Studies. This week they completed demand writing activities. The grade 5’s wrote about what they would do if they won a million dollars and the grade 6’s wrote on what they would do if they could be mayor of Corner Brook for a day. The grade 6 essays have been sent to Mayor Greeley for a contest. They wish they could all win the chance to be mayor for a day.

The Junior High class is working on writing autobiographies. They are almost finished their sewing projects and are hoping the weather will get better so they can do some geocaching.

Coming-Up
There are lots of musical practices coming up this week. The musical will be presented to local schools on May 26 at 9:30 and 1:15 and May 27 at 11:00. The performance for family and friends is on May 27 at 7:00 pm admission is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children.

During the month of May all bags of recycling dropped off at the school will be donated to the school Breakfast Program. Bags can be dropped off at the school or you can contact the school to have your recycling picked up.

Elementary & Jr. High Students Travel To St. Pierre

Grade 4 to 9 Students tour the newspaper in St. Pierre

The grade 4-9 to students went on a school trip to St. Pierre. They left on Tuesday at 2 o’clock. Thank you to the staff and parents who drove us and were in charge of students on the trip. The parents who came were Mrs. Du Toit, Mr. Reynolds, Mrs. Brothers and Dr. Hamann.

The grade 4 to 9 students and adults took a tour of the boulangerie all the bread smelled really good. They also took a tour of the lycee. It was a really big school and it had a lot of different things like a mini-nursery, a carpentry area and other interesting stuff. They also took a tour of the radio station, the museum and a bus tour of the island. They saw many horses over 320!

Last Friday was City of Corner Brook Clean-Up Day. Students picked up garbage around the school and across the street at the church and around Bishop Crosby’s walk way.

On Monday our school celebrated Music Monday. On Wednesday there was a parent information session for parents of the September 2010 French Immersion Kindergarten class.

On Tuesday it was National Teacher Day! It is a day to respect our teachers for what they do. We all think everyday should be teacher day.

On Thursday students participated in a walk for the kids help phone. Students raised money for the Kids Help Phone and some students visited classes to talk about the Kids Help Phone. We did this walk so kids can get help with their problems.

Musical practice for 101 Dalmatians has begun. Students are excited about the play and are all practicing their lines and the songs.

Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Keely Brothers who did very well in a gymnastics competition in Gander last weekend, she placed fifth overall. Also congratulations to Derek Atwood who won a bike helmet from Bell Aliant at the Aliant Bicycle Safety Presentation on Tuesday.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are welcoming a student from the College of the North Atlantic named Sara Roze. They are working on Mother’s Day activities and working on the number 9.

The Kindergarten class is working on graphing in math and is excited about class picture day.

The Grade 1 class is learning another mental math strategy using addition to subtract. In Social Studies they are learning how Corner Brook has changed over time.

The Grade 2 class is hoping the sun will shine soon so they can try out the chalk they made from egg shells. They are working on a unit all about dinosaurs.

The grade 3 and 4 class is glad to be back together. The grade 3’s did research on St. Pierre while the grade 4’s were away. They had fun this week learning new games on the playground.

The Grade 5 and 6 class have finished their sculptures are starting sculptures using recycled objects. They are busy preparing for upcoming tests and assignments this week.

The Junior High class is hard at work with their sewing projects. Mrs. Deckert has been helping them learn how to use the sewing machines. On Tuesday they had a presentation from a public health nurse student on body image. They are preparing for exams next month.

Last Friday was our annual science fair. There were many interesting experiments and research projects on lot of different topics like solar energy, tooth decay, butterflies, locomotive engines and static electricity. There were three guest judges: Raphael Soucy, Simon Janson, and Cec Lake. Thank you very much for judging. All students received a certificate designed by Mr. Reynolds. Thank you to everyone who helped to make our science fair a success again this year.

On Monday grades 5-9 enjoyed a drama workshop with TNL’s Sarah MacDonald-Anderson. They learned fun techniques for acting by playing games.

Our Student Leadership Council is having a daily canteen that is starting this Monday. Students can buy things like yogurt, apples, cheese strings, water, and 100 calorie chips.

Last week several of our students attended Mrs. Mugford’s funeral. She was a valued contributor to the IHMS prayer group.

Frisbee intramurals have started at lunch time for grades 2-9 on Mondays and Thursdays at lunch.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are starting spring crafts and the number 9. They are planting the trees they got at the Forestry Fair on Friday.

The Kindergarten class is doing time lines in social studies and graphing in Math.

The Grade 1 class had a public health nurse visit their class to talk to them about dental health on Monday.

The Grade 2 class is busy preparing for the 101 Dalmatians musical. The students are practicing their songs. They are also learning about living things in science and studying how animals change as they grow up.

The grade 3 and 4 class is excited to learn their hamster Nibbles is a girl. The grade 3’s missed the grade 4’s who were gone to St. Pierre this week. They are hard at work on novel studies in language arts.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is enjoying caring for their class pets. They are working on independent novel studies for language arts and finishing up a unit on Africa in Social Studies.

The Junior High class really enjoyed the drama workshop on Monday. They are working on sewing projects in Enrichment class.

Ninth Annual Speak Off

Our ninth Annual Elementary Speak-Off was held on Monday, April 19, 2010 for students in grades 4, 5, and 6. Following many interesting in-class presentations, 8 students were selected to present their speeches in the Chapel, in front of a group of approximately 50 people, including two judges, their family, friends and teachers.

Since 2002, IHMS’s Elementary Speak-Off has been sponsored by Mrs. Gail Stevenson, a former teacher and former Associate Director at IHMS, and her husband Bruce. The plaque, which hangs in our main hallway, the winner’s plaque, and participants’ medals, are all donated in memory of their son, Brian Stevenson.

Jasmine Penney’s (Grade 6) speech was titled, ‘My Life At IHMS’, Abigail Companion’s (Grade 5) speech was titled, ‘Bullying’, Christopher Barnes’s (Grade 6) speech was titled, ‘Animal Abuse’, Faith Yates’s (Grade 6) speech was titled, ‘Classic Cartoon Characters’, Aaron Hancock’s (Grade 5) speech was titled, ‘Global Warming’, MacKenzie Brothers’s (Grade 4) speech was titled, ‘G is For Giraffes’, Carla du Toit’s (Grade 6) speech was titled, ‘Smoking’, Katerina Hamann’s (Grade 4) speech was titled, ‘My Best Friend’

The two invited judges for this year were Mrs. Bernadette Meiwald, former Director of Education at IHMS and Mr. Peter Antle, a member of the Corner Brook Rotary. After 8 very well delivered speeches, and a brief deliberation, the judges announced this year’s winner was Carla du Toit. Congratulations to Carla, and to all of this year’s speakers.

Another Busy Week....

Rogan Seaward (grade 1) and Alex Williams (grade 3) who tied for third place in the National Engineering and Geoscience Month Poster Contest.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary Speak Off was held on Monday night. Everyone did very well. The winner was Carla du Toit who spoke on Smoking. The judges for the Speak Off were Mr. Peter Antle from the Rotary Club and Mrs. Bernadette Meiwald past Director of IHMS. Thank you to the Stevenson family for sponsoring this Speak Off again this year.

There was a second orientation for the September 2010 Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

The grade 5-9 students traveled to the Arts and Culture Centre on Thursday to see the TNL performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. It was a great show. Sarah MacDonald-Anderson from TNL will be coming to our school on Monday afternoon to do a theatre workshop with our students.

First Reconciliation was held on Thursday evening at All Hallows. Thank you to Mrs. McCarthy, Mrs. George and Mrs. English for helping out with this important night. Thursday was also Earth Day. Classes celebrated with special earth activities and stories.

Today we are visiting the forestry fair and having our annual science fair. The parent viewing starts at 1 and ends at 2.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes did Earth Day activities and are working on the number 8.Vicki Janes, the student from CONA is leaving today. The students will miss her. Thank you for your help and kindness.

The Kindergarten class is learning how to take care of their health and studying data analysis in math.

The Grade 1 class is excited for their Earth Day celebrations this week. They are also excited to visit the Forestry Fair today and the Science Fair this afternoon.

The Grade 2 class is learning about dinosaurs. They enjoyed the Earth Day activities. They had a bake sale to raise money for a new class pet. They got a Beta fish named Bubbles.

The grade 3 and 4 class would like to congratulate their classmates who participated in the ice show. They are working on novel studies and looking after their hamster Nibbles. Nibbles has been enjoying sleepovers with many of the students who have gotten to take him home for the night.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is doing a craft in religion and created plays for social studies class which they performed for other classes in the school. They are also creating sculptures in art class. They are excited about the St. Pierre trip next week.

The Junior High class is having math and science tests this week. On Monday they visited the public library. They are hard at work on research papers.

Next week our grades 4-9 students will be on a trip to St. Pierre. Bon Voage!

We're Glad To Be Back After Easter Break!

Jump Rope for Heart and Stroke Foundation. Students raised money through pledges for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and took part in a skipping challenge. Everyone had a great Easter Break and we are glad to back. We had the first round of speeches for the elementary speak off in our classrooms on Wednesday. Five people were chosen to go to the IHMS Elementary Speak Off on Monday, April 19. They are: MacKenzie Brothers, Katerina Hamann, Abigail Companion, Aaron Hancock, Jasmine Penney, Carla Du Toit, Faith Yates, and Christopher Barnes.

On Monday classes started the Jump Rope for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Students are still collecting sponsorship money for this activity.

This week we welcome Mrs. Marie Ryan to our school. She is substituting for Mr. Hancock while he is away on leave.

Today is casual day. Yeah!

Stars of the Week

We would like to congratulate all of our students this week who have received awards for their extra curricular activities.

Brayden Ryan, who plays on the Adam B team, won a bronze medal at the provincial hockey tournament over the Easter Break.

Anna Brake received the award for Most Improved at the Silver Blades Skating Club annual awards ceremony.

Grade 6 student, Jasmine Penney, has been nominated for Corner Brook Female Athlete of the Year.

Grade 1 student Rogan Seaward and grade 3 student Alex Williams have tied for third place in the National Engineering and Geoscience Month Poster Contest. They both received a letter and a t-shirt. Congratulations everyone!

The Junior Kindergarten classes are working on the letters “S” and the number “8”. They are looking forward to their kindergarten orientation next week.

The Kindergarten class is studying capacity in math class. They loved the Easter break.

The Grade 1 class is getting ready for the science fair. They are learning about new life in science. They miss Miss Bennett a lot.

The Grade 2 class is doing sums in math and learning about dinosaurs. They are getting ready for their First Reconciliation.

The grade 3 and 4 class is happy to be back to school. Their hamster is growing and has a new play area.

The Grade 5 and 6 class welcomes two new classmates. Recess and Lunch are baby gerbils they have adopted as their new classmates. The class is enjoying playing with their new friends and learning all about them. They are excited about the elementary speak off and are working on novel studies.

The Junior High class has started their sewing projects and are reviewing for their science test. They are looking forward to their field trip to the Arts and Culture Centre next week.

Coming-Up

Monday night is the Elementary Speak Off at 7 pm in the cafeteria. Also on Monday night is the Rusty Cup Challenge where RNC officers and staff members from local schools play a game of hockey. This game is in aid of the Kids Eat Smart Foundation. All tickets sold by our students goes towards our school breakfast program. Contact the school for your tickets.

There will be a second orientation session on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon for the September 2010 Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students.

Friday, April 23 is the annual school Science Fair. Viewing for the parents will be from 1-2 pm.

Grade 4 student Douglas MacKenzie looks at a book about animals at our Book Fair

Our girl’s basketball game was a joy. The girl’s parents and teachers had a “ball”. All participants played well.

The scholastic Book Fair started on Monday and ended on Tuesday. Thank you to Mrs. McCarthy, Mr. McCarthy, Miss Bennett, and Mrs. George and all the students on the Book Fair Student Crew. Alex Williams was the winner of the snake guessing contest and Keely Brothers won the family door prize.

The orientation for the September 2010 Junior Kindergartens and Kindergartens was Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. We were happy to see all the new little faces. They had a lot of fun at our school. All students had fun and enjoyed the day at school with their friends and teachers.

The Easter Passion was celebrated with Mrs. Coleman, the prayer group and volunteers on Thursday afternoon at All Hallows.

This week our school is saying good-bye to Miss Simone Bennett who has finished her education internship with the grade 1 class. Everyone will miss her smiling face and great ideas! Thanks for everything.

The QSP fundraiser has finished this week. Lots of magazines have been sold to help support our school.

IHMS students will be fundraising over Easter break for the Heart and Stroke foundation for a Jump Rope for Heart Skip-a-thon from April 12-16th during physical education classes.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Hancock who welcomed baby Katie last week.

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are doing Easter crafts and enjoying their class party.

The Kindergarten class is learning about Easter and storms in science.

The Grade 1 class is learning about related facts in math and learning about what human and animal houses are made of. On Monday they made bird nests out of rice Krispies.

The Grade 2 class is learning about dinosaurs and fossils. They made their own fossils. They are also doing a workbook on Where the Wild Things Are and learning to count money.

The grade 3 and 4 class made stained glass crosses in art class for Easter. They are finished their CRTs, speeches, and social studies projects.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is getting a class pet. They are hoping to get a gerbil after Easter. They would like to rescue a gerbil or take in an unwanted gerbil. They had a cookie sale on Wednesday to raise money to provide for their class pet. They presented their D.A.R.E. essays this week.

The Junior High class made pancakes in Enrichment class and are preparing for class debates.

Coming-Up
There is a Pro Life walk on Friday, April 2 in front of Western Memorial Regional Hospital at 11 am. All are welcome.

We are excited for our Easter break. School re-opens on April 12.

The IHMS Elementary Speak off is April 19. The Science Fair is April 23.

A Week Filled With Stars and Apples

IHMS chamber choir sang in “The Stars of the Festival” on Tuesday. They did a great job. The chamber choir received the $50 Bonnell Cole Janes Scholarship.

Last Friday we were very busy. We celebrated Apply Day at the breakfast program and had a St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt. We searched for items like green pencils and calculators. Everybody had fun. The winners were the grade 1 class in the primary category and the grade 5/6 in the elementary category.

Also last Friday Patrick Davis, Sarah Yetman, Andrew Dolomount and Mrs. McCarthy went to the Winter Carnival awards ceremony. We got a plaque and a cheque for $100 as the winner of the elementary snow sculpture contest. The students also received cool winter carnival hats. Hats off to everyone for your hard work!

There was a parent information session for September 2010 for Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten parents on Wednesday. The orientation for the new students will be next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

Today classes are observing Earth Hour 2010. This is a time when we turn out the lights and think of ways to conserve energy and keep our earth green!

Today is our monthly casual day. Lots of students are wearing their jeans and t-shirts.

Stars of the Week
Students Jasmine Penney and Carla Du Toit won scholarships at the Rotary Music Festival. Jasmine won the $50 Beta Sigma Phi Scholarship for singing and piano and Carla won the $50 Beta Sigma Phi Scholarship for singing. Congratulations everyone! Our school would also like to congratulate IHMS graduate Yvette Coleman who was the Senior Rose Bowl winner.

Hard work really does pay off. Congratulations to IHMS graduate Haley Kawaja who has been awarded a scholarship to Queen’s University for $95,000.

Congratulations to grade 1 student McKenna Batstone who won a gold medal last weekend at the Marble Mountain Ski Race. Good Job!

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are doing Easter crafts and welcoming an intern from The College of the North Atlantic who will be helping with the class. Her name is Vicki Janes.

The Kindergarten class is learning length in math and about families in social studies.

The Grade 1 class is adding and subtracting in math. They are learning about structures in science and the true meaning of Easter in religion.

The Grade 2 class is doing a novel study and Easter activities.

The grade 3 and 4 class has got a new class pet. He is a hamster named Nibbles. They are doing a challenge to keep all their stuff off the floor. Last Friday as part of science class they went on a tour of the new town hall building site. They learned about structures from city engineer Mr. Jim Warford.

The Grade 5 and 6 class has finished their photo essays. They are working hard at their D.A.R. E. essays and their speeches for the Elementary Speak Off.

The Junior High class is looking forward to making pancakes from scratch for their last cooking class. They are keeping track of their daily spending habits and learning about financial fitness.

Coming-Up
On Sunday the girls basketball team will play two exhibition games one against the parents at 6:00 pm and then against the teachers at 7:00 pm. All students, parents and family members are welcome to come and cheer on the teams.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at our school on March 29th for a family event from 7-9 pm and March 30th from 9-12 and 1-3 pm.

Easter break begins on Thursday, April 1st at 2:50 pm. There will be no after school program on April 1.

Music Festival & St. Patrick's Day Kept Us Busy

Yay! The Rotary Music Festival has started. The IHMS choirs sang on Wednesday at Corner Brook Regional High and did great. Our school choir song “I Love to Laugh” was enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to our teachers and Mr. Graham for helping to make it a success.

Many of our students have performed in the Rotary Music Festival this week including: Tarik Rodrigues, Anna Brake, MacKenzie Brothers, Nicola Du Toit, Aaron Hancock, Nicole Keeping, Jasmine Penney, Carla Du Toit, Sarah Keeping, Patrick Davis, and Andrew Dolomount. Congratulations to you all.

Students have started selling QSP magazine orders. We love to read. These sales will continue until March 29. Congratulations to Teagan O’Reilly who won the ostrich in the first prize draw on Monday for the QSP magazine orders. There will be more draws to come.

There was a sock hop and green theme day on Tuesday to celebrate St. Patricks’s Day. The sock hop was in aid of the girls’ basketball team. Everyone looked fantastic in green. Also to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the Student Leadership Council had a scavenger hunt with pot of gold prizes for classes and a chocolate gold coin sale.

Today is apple day. As part of the Kids Eat smart breakfast program we will be doing apple activities and enjoying apples with our breakfast. Some of the treats we will have are yogurt apple parfaits and apple fruit salad.

This weekend grade 6 student, Jasmine Penney, will travel to the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games in Grand Falls. Jasmine will be competing in figure skating. We wish her lots of good luck!

Class News
The Junior Kindergarten classes are starting the number 7 and the letter “J”. They are doing apple tasting for apple day.

The Kindergarten class is learning their sight words and working on their letters. They are also learning about fruits and vegetables.

The Grade 1 class had a great time with their trivia challenge “Reach for the Stars” on Monday. The student’s parents came in to watch and they had a lot of fun. On St. Patrick’s Day they tried to catch a leprechaun, but he kept getting away.

The Grade 2 class is doing leprechaun activities in computer class. They had lots of fun examining leprechaun’s footsteps and reading the poems he left behind.

The grade 3 and 4 class made a cake in math for fractions. They enjoyed the sock hop and St. Patrick’s Day.

The Grade 5 and 6 class is almost done their sewing projects. They decorated the classroom for St. Patrick’s Day. Their paper mache solar system is now hanging from the ceiling.

The Junior High class made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies this week in Enrichment. After Easter they will begin a sewing unit and will learn about how to budget.

Coming-Up
There will be an information session on Wednesday, March 24th at 7 pm in the gym for parents of our September 2010 Junior Kindergarten classes and our full day English and French Immersion Kindergarten.

Next Thursday is staff meeting and early dismissal for students.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at our school on March 29th and 30th.
