IHMS Appears In Progress Magazine's 2011 Progress Preferred Book of Lists
Immaculate Heart of Mary School was recently mentioned in Progess Magazine's 2011 Progress Preferred Book of Lists.
IHMS was ranked 13th (by number of full-time students), of all Independent schools in Atlantic Canada (see the magazine's cover page and specific page where IHMS is mentioned below).
IHMS was noted as having one of the best Faculity to Student ratios (1:8), combined with the lowest Tuition of all schools on the list.

School officially closed on Wednesday with mass and our annual awards assembly. During the assembly the band played, the choir sang, we celebrated our achievements and watched a slideshow of pictures from the year. Thank you to Mrs. McHugh for conducting the band, Mr. Graham for playing and preparing the entire school to sing and to Mr. Hancock for preparing the slideshow.
On Monday we had our end of year spelling bee, school wide breakfast and sports day. All students in grades 3 to 6 participated in the spelling bee. Students wore black and yellow. Congratulations to the class winners. Clara Ryan was the grade 3 winner, Alex Williams was the grade 4 winner, Hannah Sparkes was the grade 5 winner and Abigail Companion was the grade 6 winner.
We had a yummy final breakfast on Monday. Thank you to Mrs. King, Mrs. George and Mrs. McCarthy for cooking us all pancakes!
Our annual year end sports day was great. The theme was “splash”. Everyone had a great time playing sponge dodge ball, water balloon volleyball and many other wet outdoor activities. Thank you to Ms. Dutton, the student leadership council and the junior high class for organizing the events.
On Tuesday we celebrated Eco-Friendly Friends Day by learning about being more eco-friendly and having composting sessions for kindergarten to grade 6 with Nikki Abbott and Angela Vincent from the City of Corner Brook.
Also on Tuesday the grade 2 class sponsored a “hat and shades” day for the Children’s Wish Foundation and the primary classes enjoyed a teddy bear picnic.
On Thursday morning we had a breakfast for our school volunteers. Thanks for everything!
Congratulations to all the students and teachers on another wonderful year at IHMS. Also, congratulations to all the award recipients. .

at the grade 3/4 Newfoundland Heritage Fair on Monday afternoon.
Last Friday Nikki Abbott and Angela Vincent, two Environmental Educators with the City of Corner Brook, did a composting session with our students. Next Tuesday they are coming back to do more sessions on Eco Friendly Friends Day.
Also on Friday, the public health nurses did a safety scavenger hunt with the grade 3 and 4 class in the gym.
On Monday the grades 3 and 4 students held a Newfoundland Heritage Fair in their classroom. There were many different displays on the history and culture of Newfoundland. Many classes and parents attended. Thank you to Ms. Dutton for organizing the fair.
On Tuesday evening Mrs. King hosted a St. Pierre party for everyone to get together to look at our pictures and video. Thank you to Mr. Reynolds for preparing the slide show and to Sarah Keeping, Claire Reynolds, and Carla du Toit for creating the St. Pierre video. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the pizza and dessert.
On Wednesday at lunch we had an Annie cast party. We watched the video filmed by the junior high class and enjoyed cake and milk together.
This week the junior high’s had their final exams and the grade 9’s wrote their language arts CRT. Their exams started on Tuesday and will finish on Monday of next week.
Yesterday our school hosted its second annual Art Show in the gym. The pieces of artwork submitted were very impressive. Good job everyone!
The primary students are on a field trip to go bowling and then having a picnic at Margaret Bowater Park today. The junior high class is also having a field trip to Bonne Bay Pond for a day filled with fun activities.

Congratulations to Kyra Hodder who was a winner in the World’s Ocean Day Contest. Kyra’s picture is featured on their calendar.
From The Classrooms
The junior kindergarten classes are doing Father’s Day activities and shaving cream art. Also they are spending lots of time outside having fun. Caleb Rasleigh’s family welcomed a new baby girl this week. Her name is Lydia.
The kindergarten English class is excited for their field trip today. They really enjoyed the art show.
The kindergarten French class is still learning about animals. They are learning more French songs and are getting ready for the last week of school.
The grade one class is doing Father’s Day crafts and they are excited for their field trip.
The grade two class is making ramps out of cardboard in science and they are excited for summer vacation. They are collecting data in math and enjoyed the art show this week.
The grade three and four class is busy planning activities for Eco Friendly Friends Day. They are looking forward to their classes’ end of year variety show on Tuesday. They enjoyed the cake at the Annie cast party.
The grade five and six are excited about the end of the school year. They have been busy helping to plan the theme for the school yearbook. Last week they won the Wonder Cares fitness challenge and got to keep the fitness lion for the week.
The junior high class is enjoying their trip to the cabin today. They studied hard for their exams and are looking forward to the summer vacation.
There will be a school wide breakfast on Monday morning beginning at 7:45 am. Monday is also sports day. There will be a spelling bee for grade 3 to 6. Students are encouraged to wear yellow and black..

Monday was dress up day. Everyone looked wonderful!
Our Janeway fundraiser was a huge success. We raised $407.73 for the Janeway Children’s Hospital. Thank you to all who donated!
Congratulations to all the kindergartens. They had their graduation this Wednesday. They looked great in their blue caps and gowns.
Yesterday the grade 3 and 4 class went on a field trip with Ducks Unlimited. They had a lot of fun.
The math CRTs were on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for grades 3 and 6. We hope you did well.
Today the junior high exams begin. Their first exam is social studies.
Congratulations to Kaden Rodrigues, Sam Antle, Max Antle, and Syndee Hynes who participated in the Arthur James Sun run this past weekend. All participants received a medal. Kaden Rodrigues was the overall winner. Way to go!
Congratulations to Brian MacKenzie who was the grade 8 western region winner in the YMCA Market Your Thoughts Essay Contest. Brian received a cheque and a certificate. There were only three regional winners in Newfoundland.
From The Classrooms
The junior kindergarten classes are making Father’s Day activities and preparing for the art show. They are also having outdoor fun.
The kindergarten English class had a great time at their grad. They are looking forward to summer holidays and going to grade 1.
The kindergarten French class also had a great time at their grad. They are busy making Father’s Day crafts and are learning more French vocabulary.
The grade one class is learning about names and functions of plants in science. They are finishing their last math unit.
The grade two class student of the week is Chenoah Park. They are learning about maps and graphs in social studies.
The grade three and four class is happy their CRTs are done. They had their last spelling test this week. They are researching different rock minerals and are making slideshows.
The grade five and six made advocate posters and are trying to come up with a name and theme for the yearbook. They are learning about plays in language arts. They are busy preparing for the end of year spelling bee.
The junior high class are started their final exams. They are looking forward to summer vacation.
The grade 3 and 4 class heritage fair is Monday from 12:30-1:30 pm. All are welcome to attend.
Our salmon release day is Tuesday.
The annual Art Exhibition is Thursday at 6 pm.

Students Jack Matthews, Alex Williams and Ryan Murphy whose artwork was featured on the national EcoKids 2010-2011 Calendar.
Today we are collecting money in our wishing well for the Janeway Children’s Hospital. Our money will be donated on Saturday during their annual fundraiser.
The grade 5 and 6 class and the junior high students painted games on our front walkway. We now have two games of hopscotch, alphabet hopscotch, a calculator an alphabet tree and two games of four square. We hope everyone enjoys the new games.
The June calendar went home this week. It is also posted on our school website.
The Student Leadership Council is having a contest for a class to choose a name for the yearbook and a theme for this year. The winning class will get ice cream!
The grade 3 and 6 students wrote their language arts CRTs this week.
On Tuesday night we had our annual Elementary Speak Off. Congratulations to Nicola du Toit who was chosen as the overall winner. Also, congratulations to Alex Williams, Maria Reynolds, Katerina Hamann, Hannah Sparkes, MacKenzie Brothers, Abigail Companion and Jenna Yetman who also participated. Everyone was super! Thank you Bruce and Gail Stevenson for once again sponsoring the speak off, the teachers for preparing the reception, and Mr. Mel Woodman and Mrs. Eileen Ryan for judging the speakers.
On Wednesday our teachers participated in Camera Day. Each teacher brought in a camera and took pictures all through the day for the yearbook.
Mr. Don Ivany from the Atlantic Salmon Federation visited our school this week to help rescue the salmon in our science lab. It is much appreciated. We are preparing to release our salmon on June 14.
Congratulations to Arabella LeBlanc, Alessandra LeBlanc, Brooke Ruth, Charolette Sweetapple, Clara Ryan and Chenoah Park on their performance at Dance Studio West’s annual show.

The junior kindergarten classes are enjoying playing outside. They are busy getting ready for the end of year art show.
The kindergarten English class is getting ready for their kindergarten graduation.
The Kindergarten French Immersion class is making animals out of clay for art. They are keeping up with their exercising challenge. They are getting ready to learn the names of instruments in French.
The grade one class is learning how Corner Brook has evolved over time. In language arts they are making feel good books for each other.
The grade two class is learning about dinosaurs. They have made a list of all the questions they have about dinosaurs. They are looking forward to summer vacation.
The grade three and four class is planning an Eco-Friendly Friend’s Day. The grade 3’s did very well on their CRTs. Congratulations to all the grade 4’s on their awesome speeches for the speak off. In language they had crazy spelling bee. Everyone did great!
The grade five and six had fun painting games outside on the walkway. They are busy thinking of a name and a theme for the school yearbook. They are looking forward to the end of the school year.
The junior high class is busy preparing for final exams. In enrichment they are learning html codes to create webpages.
Monday is dress up day. Students and staff can dress in semi-formal clothes or costumes.
The kindergarten graduation is Wednesday, June 8th at 6 pm.

Last weekend was a long weekend. School started again on Tuesday. We hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend.
Last week Mr. Claude Haggerty an illusionist visited our school and performed amazing magic tricks with our students and teachers.
On Wednesday of this week we had our classroom photos and group photos done for the yearbook.
On Thursday the grades 4-6 students had their in-class speak offs. Students from each class were chosen to go to the annual elementary speak off next Tuesday night.
The grades 3 and 6 language CRTs begin today and continue into next week.
Students participated in an art competition this week called “The Wonders of Wetlands”. They learned about our wetlands and how they help our planet.
Students are having lots of fun doing WonderActive fitness activities every day.
Alicia Cross finished her work placement in the junior kindergarten class this week. Good luck!
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to Sydnee Hynes and Kaden Rodrigues who competed in the Cycle Solutions bike competition last weekend.

Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are making chia dads. They are having outdoor fun activities and learning about frogs.
The kindergarten English class is working on money and time in math.
The Kindergarten French Immersion class is starting to practice for Kindergarten graduation.
The grade one class is making sculptures and learning how to solve addition and subtraction story problems.
The grade two class is learning about dinosaur activities and in math are learning about geometric solids.
The grade three and four class enjoyed the in class speak off this week. In French they are making creatures out of plasticine. Their pet fish Equation died this week. They held a private ceremony for him.
The grade five and six is learning how to create posters using Microsoft word in computer class. They are preparing to paint games on the walkway in front of the school beginning next week. They have two more spelling tests for this year.
The junior high class is getting ready for their final exams. The grade 7’s are planning their commercial viewing for early next week. The grade 8 and 9’s are reading Romeo and Juliet. In enrichment they are learning hmtl design for webpages.

The Elementary Speak Off is being held on Tuesday in our school chapel beginning at 7 pm.

This week we performed the show “Annie Jr.”. Congratulations to everyone on four great performances. Thank you to Mr. Graham for directing the play, the parents who made the costumes, all the teachers for their hard work and all the people who made baked goods for the bake sale. The girl's soccer team played in a tournament last weekend at Sacred Heart. The girls played very well. Here are a few pictures and video clips...
On Monday Bethany Whelan and Nicole Keeping were mock councillors at a council meeting for Municipal Awareness week. The grade 6 students also wrote essays about what they would do if they were mayor for a day.
Also on Monday, Abigail Companion attended an information session on composting for our school. We are starting a composting program in the next few weeks.
This week our students got some new outdoor play equipment. We now have dodge balls, soccer balls, hula hoops and skipping ropes for taking outside at lunch.
This weekend is a long weekend. We hope everyone enjoys the break!
Stars of the Week

Congratulations to our students who were in the Saltos Gymnastics 2011 end of year show. Our students who performed were: Simon Boitstefsi, Ben Hamilton, Chole Colbourne, Hailey Colbourne, Lauren Davis, Carla du Toit, Nicole du Toit, Keely Brothers, Kyra Hodder, Rebecca Janes, Kelsey Maxwell, Grace Pye and Wesley Toraville.
Congratulations to Keely Brothers who won a silver medal in vault at the provincial competition in Corner Brook last weekend this weekend. She placed fourth overall and her team also won a silver medal.
Congratulations to the grade 8 and 9 students who participated in the YMCA Market Your Thoughts Essay Contest. They all received a certificate and a small prize.
Class News
The junior kindergarten classes are getting ready for the art show coming up in June.
The kindergarten English class is learning about money in math.
The kindergarten French class are learning songs and poems to help them remember farm animal vocabulary.
The grade 1 class is learning about symbols used in legends on maps and on the globe. They are also having their final spelling test this week.
The grade 2 class is going geometry in math. They are also learning about dinosaurs in science.
The grade 3 and 4 class is planning an Eco-Friendly Friend Day. They are having a heritage fair for parents. In art they made pictures for Hailey Colbourne’s grandfather for writing a poem about their trip to St. Pierre.
The grade 5 and 6 class is working on an art competition on wetlands. They are doing watercolour paintings. The seniors group visited with the class again this week and they did an activity about how they have used their hands in their lives and they had a question and answer period.
The junior high class is having a band quiz today. The grade 7’s are filming commercials for language arts class.
Coming Up
School is closed on Monday for the Victoria Day holiday.
The grades 4-6 in class speak offs are coming up next week.
CRTs begin for grades 3, 6, and 9 next week.
